Oui como marcador interaccional: usos y funciones en francés como lengua adicional
Speaking an additional language (AL) is one of the challenges that students face. The interactional skills required for communication, on the other hand, are not explicitly taught. In this paper, we examine nine paired interactions in an oral exam from a B1 level French (FAL) course. The aim is to describe interactional strategies, specifically those that involve the use of oui, in order to identify students’ learning needs. The findings confirm the polyfunctionality of oui, which is directly related to its position. Furthermore, we conclude that its overuse is a response to the learners’ lack of other markers in their lexical repertoire as well as the characteristics of the assessment tas
Voter based control for situation awareness and obstacle avoidance
Situational awareness and obstacle avoidance for a powered wheelchair are considered. A voter-based control system uses the results from a path planner, sensors and image processing algorithms. Differences in the spatial landscape of urban mobility: Gender and socioeconomic perspectives
Many of our routines and activities are linked to our ability to move; be it commuting to work, shopping for groceries, or meeting friends. Yet, factors that limit the individuals’ ability to fully realise their mobility needs will ultimately affect the opportunities they can have access to (e.g. cultural activities, professional interactions). One important aspect frequently overlooked in human mobility studies is how gender-centred issues can amplify other sources of mobility disadvantages (e.g. socioeconomic inequalities), unevenly affecting the pool of opportunities men and women have access to. In this work, we leverage on a combination of computational, statistical, and information-theoretical approaches to investigate the existence of systematic discrepancies in the mobility diversity (i.e. the diversity of travel destinations) of (1) men and women from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and (2) work and non-work travels. Our analysis is based on datasets containing multiple instances of large-scale, official, travel surveys carried out in three major metropolitan areas in South America: Medellín and Bogotá in Colombia, and São Paulo in Brazil. Our results indicate the presence of general discrepancies in the urban mobility diversities related to the gender and socioeconomic characteristics of the individuals. Lastly, this paper sheds new light on the possible origins of gender-level human mobility inequalities, contributing to the general understanding of disaggregated patterns in human mobility
Effective Higher-order Link Prediction and Reconstruction from Simplicial Complex Embeddings
Methods that learn graph topological representations are becoming the usual choice to extract features to help solve machine learning tasks on graphs. In particular, low-dimensional encoding of graph nodes can be exploited in tasks such as link prediction and network reconstruction, where pairwise node embedding similarity is interpreted as the likelihood of an edge incidence. The presence of polyadic interactions in many real-world complex systems is leading to the emergence of representation learning techniques able to describe systems that include such polyadic relations. Despite this, their application on estimating the likelihood of tuple-wise edges is still underexplored.
Here we focus on the reconstruction and prediction of simplices (higher-order links) in the form of classification tasks, where the likelihood of interacting groups is computed from the embedding features of a simplicial complex. Using similarity scores based on geometric properties of the learned metric space, we show how the resulting node-level and group-level feature embeddings are beneficial to predict unseen simplices, as well as to reconstruct the topology of the original simplicial structure, even when training data contain only records of lower-order simplices
Control of a semi-autonomous powered wheelchair
A model reference controller for a powered wheelchair is described. The chair is fitted with sensor systems to assist a disabled user with steering their chair. The controller can cope with varying circumstances and situations. Non-linear terms are compensated for using an adaptive and automatic scheme. Consistent and dependable veer-controll is considered and the system was able to deal with uncertainties, for example changing surfaces, different shifting weights of users, hills, bumps, slopes and differences in tires and wheels. The controller has a quasi-linear closed-loop behaviour and that means that extra outer control loops can be appended later, for example path-following algorithms. An assistive agent was also created so that sperate wheelchairs will be able to communicate with each other in the future
