Identity, Difference, and Belonging
The first volume of the two-volume book publication entitled "Multiculturalism, Conflict and Belonging", which stems out of the four-day international conference under the same title organized by Interdisciplinary.Net at Mansfield College, Oxford University, in September 2012, aims not only at exploring the concepts of "identity", "difference" and "belonging" from a theoretical perspective, but more importantly at relating them empirically to multicultural contexts that shed a better light on the concepts in question. Both volumes are composed of chapters under various themes that provide an analytical analysis on how individuals choose and shift from one identity to the other as well as how they voluntarily and involuntarily belong to one or the other group thus shaping the very fabrics of a multicultural environment. This first volume entitled "Identity, Difference and Belonging" is composed of nine chapters that are divided under two main themes, namely: (1) Making and Negotiating Identities: Education, Religion and Culture; and (2) Making Identities: Cultural Representations

The Capture of Valdemar II of Denmark according to the Dunstable Chronicle The capture of King Valdemar 2 and his son in 1223 by count Henrik of Schwerin was a significant event in Danish medieval history. The release of the king was secured only several years later, after paying a hefty ransom, and Valdemar did not subsequently succeed in reestablishing his formerly powerful position in Northern Germany. Among the few and brief sources to the episode is the hitherto overlooked AD 1225 entry in the Dunstable Chronicle. The text of the otherwise reliable chronicle is on this particular matter crammed with factual error and adds little to our knowledge on the event itself. Nevertheless, the brief tale, which is translated into Danish in an appendix to the article, demonstrates certain ideological and literary motifs typical for the epoch such as the tragi-comical nature of drunkenness, and treason through apparent friendship. Allegedly, schemes and circumstances of this kind led to the success of the abduction. Finally, parallelisms and possible connections between the chronicle and other sources are discussed
Current Perspective on the Location and Function of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) and its Metabolic Partners in the Kidney
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter located in the mammalian central nervous system, which binds to GABAA and GABAB receptors to mediate its neurological effects. In addition to its role in the CNS, an increasing number of publications have suggested that GABA might also play a role in the regulation of renal function. All three enzymes associated with GABA metabolism; glutamic acid decarboxylase, GABA α-oxoglutarate transaminase (GABA-T) and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) have been localised to the kidney providing the necessary machinery for localised GABA synthesis and metabolism. Moreover GABA receptors have been localised to both tubular and vascular structures in the kidney, and GABA is excreted in urine (~3 μM) in humans. Despite the collective evidence describing the presence of a GABA system in the kidney, the precise function of such a system requires further clarification. Here we provide an overview of the current renal GABA literature and provide novel data that indicates GABA can act at contractile pericyte cells located along vasa recta capillaries in the renal medulla to potentially regulate medullary blood flow
The dynamics of norms and conventions under local interactions and imitation
Restricting the analysis to general 2×2 coordination games, this article shows how under certain conditions, it is highly likely that individuals coordinate on a (pay-off) efficient through risk inferior convention. This contrasts with other equilibrium refinement criteria, such as risk dominance or stochastic stability. Here it is assumed that players are situated on a toroidal regular lattice, interact only locally and, in each period, imitate the last period's most successful player in their neighborhood. If the set of observable players by an individual and the set that he interacts with are both identical and small, pay-off dominance plays the major role in defining the long-term convention. As the latter set of players increases, a risk dominant but pay-off inferior convention becomes more likely. The model also shows that the interaction of two player types in a nonsymmetric game potentially leads to nonegalitarian conventions
