Seismic vulnerability and risk assessment of a typical RC school building using hybrid-based fragility curves
Seismic risk assessment is a critical process for quantifying the expected structural damage and economic losses resulting from seismic events. Such studies are essential for developing effective pre-earthquake preparedness strategies and ensuring the efficient implementation of post-earthquake response plans. In this study, the seismic vulnerability and risk assessment of a typical low-rise reinforced concrete school building with shear wall systems, located at various locations in the province of Adıyaman, was carried out. First, a three-dimensional finite element model of the school building was developed. Subsequently, a nonlinear static (pushover) analysis was performed to obtain the capacity curve of the building. Based on three different empirical models, hybrid-based fragility curves were derived as a function of spectral acceleration. Furthermore, vulnerability curves were constructed using twelve different consequence models. A scenario-based seismic hazard analysis was conducted for the Narince segment, one of the active fault lines in the South-eastern Anatolia Thrust. As a result of the risk assessment, considering the proposed vulnerability models, the expected loss ratio values were computed at different locations. When the results are evaluated as a whole, it is observed that the loss values of the building vary significantly depending on the location. While certain locations are expected to experience irreparable damage, others are likely to sustain only minor, repairable damage. This study serves as a significant example for assessing the seismic risk of typical school building types. The proposed methodology and findings, if extended to other similar typologies, can facilitate the development of a comprehensive and regional-scale seismic risk assessment framework for school buildings.https://doi.org/10.61112/jiens.167956

Evaluating the Accuracy of Different Local Climate Zone Maps
Abstract. Local Climate Zones (LCZs) are essential for understanding urban climates, providing crucial information for urban planning, environmental monitoring, and addressing challenges like the urban heat island effect. This study evaluates the accuracy of various LCZ maps, including those from the World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT), and two independent studies by Demuzere et al. (2022) and Oliveira et al. (2020). Our analysis focuses on five major cities: Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Paris, and explores how geographic, historical, and urban planning factors influence both LCZ classifications and their accuracy. We identify and analyze misclassifications within these maps, investigating the root causes of errors, such as misaligned or insufficient sample data, low spatial resolution of input images and inadequate vector data. Our results reveals that while LCZ maps generally perform well in certain urban settings, their accuracy diminishes in more complex or heterogeneous environments. TÜRK POPÜLER MÜZİKLERİNDE YEDİ ZAMANLI RİTİMLER
Popüler müzik denildiğinde ilk akla gelen özelliklerden biri de, bir popülasyonun azımsanmayacak çoğunluğu tarafından sevilen, beğenilen, tüketilen müzik türü olduğudur. Bir müzik ürününü tüketicisi nezdinde beğenilir yapan şeyin onun kurgusunda yer alan tüm dinamikleriyle yani yapısal özellikleriyle ve tüketicinin müzik algı estetiği ile yakından ilişkisi olduğu göz ardı edilemeyecek bir gerçektir. Öte yandan akılda kolay kalıcı olması, kolay anlaşılabilir, kolay algılanabilir olması gibi özellikleri popülerliğinin diğer belirteçlerindendir. Dünyanın farklı coğrafyalarındaki yerel kültürlerin içindeki popüler müziklerde ya da küresel bazda popülerliğe sahip müzik ürünleri arasında üretimsel açıdan benzerlikler bulunur. Müzikteki zaman kavramı açısından bakıldığında karmaşık ritimlere sahip olmayan, tempo tutularak eşlik edilebilen, eğer söz unsuruna sahip ise ezberlenmesi kolay ve akılda kalıcılığı olan sözlere sahip, basit melodilerden türetilmiş müziklerin daha fazla tüketilmesi tesadüfi değildir. Bu makale çalışmasında da Türk popüler müzik türlerindeki yedi zamanlı ritim kalıpları konu edilmiş ve müziğin üretimine dair kurgulanışta bu ritim kalıplarının yapısallığı üzerinde durulmuştur. Leadership in emerging markets for digitalization: a critical biography of Süreyya Ciliv
Purpose The purpose of this study is to critically examine Süreyya Ciliv’s leadership at Turkcell, focusing on how he influenced the company’s transformation from a traditional telecom operator to a digital technology enterprise. The analysis is situated within Türkiye’s broader institutional and corporate governance landscape. Design/methodology/approach Using a critical biography methodology, the study integrates primary data from a firsthand interview with Ciliv, semi-structured interviews with diverse stakeholders, triangulated with archival documents, industry reports and the author’s autoethnographic experience as a former Turkcell employee. This multi-source approach enables a reflexive and context-sensitive leadership analysis under contested governance conditions. Findings The findings demonstrate that while Ciliv advanced significant digitalization efforts, such as the rollout of third-generation mobile telecommunications (3G) and digital mobile services, its strategic leadership was constrained by unresolved shareholder disputes and increasing state intervention. His efforts to embed a value-driven leadership model often clashed with the institutional logics of financial conservatism, political entanglement and fragmented corporate ownership. Research limitations/implications Although the study benefits from rich triangulated data, including an in-depth interview with Ciliv, its focus remains on a single leadership case in an emerging market. Nevertheless, it offers conceptual extensions to IE, digital leadership and corporate governance literature streams by revealing how contextually embedded leadership is exercised and constrained in volatile environments. Practical implications The study provides actionable insights for executives navigating digitalization in emerging economies, underscoring the need to align innovation strategies with shifting institutional logics, regulatory pressures and internal governance dynamics. Social implications The analysis interrogates whether corporate digitalization agendas in emerging markets foster genuine infrastructure advancement or primarily serve shareholder interests, raising important concerns about digital inclusion and organizational ethics. Originality/value Challenging dominant heroic chief executive officer narratives, this study contributes a rare critical biography of a technology leader in an emerging market. Weaving together insider and outsider perspectives showcases a more grounded understanding of how leadership, governance and innovation intersect in politically complex environments.https://doi.org/10.1108/jmh-10-2024-015

Primary Surface Rupture and Slip Distribution Associated with the Mw 7.6 06 February 2023 Elbistan Earthquake, Turkey
The February 06, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence started with an earthquake with magnitude Mw 7.0 on the Narlı Fault and continued on the tectonic boundary between the Anatolian and Arabian plates. The main event, the Mw 7.8 Pazarcik earthquake, ruptured the East Anatolian Fault (EAF) bilaterally for over 300 km. This main event was followed nine hours later by the Mw 7.6 Elbistan earthquake, with the epicenter near the town of Ekinözü, about 100 kilometers away from the epicenter of the Pazarcik earthquake. The Elbistan earthquake also ruptured bilaterally, resulting in approximately 140 km of co-seismic surface rupture along a set of faults that form a major splay of the East Anatolian Fault Zone. Field investigations supplemented with interpretations of high-resolution photographs from small unmanned aircraft systems and helicopters show that the surface rupture associated with the Elbistan earthquake occurred on two different left-lateral strike faults: The first, known as the Çardak fault, extends from the town of Göksun in the west to Bıçakçı village in the east. The second is the newly identified Yeşilyurt Fault, an NE-SW-striking left-lateral fault with a subtle topographic expression that strikes parallel to the EAF. The surface trace of the Çardak Fault can be divided into two geometric sections: The arc-shaped western section extends nearly 80 km between Göksun and Nurhak where the rupture was continuous and focused within a narrow zone. Horizontal slip along the eastern half of this section was typically over 6 meters, reaching over 8 meters at the maximum slip location just east of the epicenter. The average lateral slip drops to approximately 4 meters west of Ericek before decreasing uniformly to the west from Fındık until the surface rupture ends in Göksun. The second fault section extends nearly E-W between Nurhak and Bıçakçı for almost 20 km, including the structurally complex region associated with the Nurhak restraining bend, where only a handful of field slip measurements were made in this broadly deformed section. The average minimum horizontal slip measurements in this section of the Çardak fault is around 2.5 m. Our field investigations indicate that the rupture established a new trend parallel to the East Anatolian Fault instead of using the E-W-oriented Sürgü Fault to connect with it. The average slip along this new 40 km-long fault zone, here named Yeşilyurt Fault, is about 1m, with maximum left-lateral slip reaching  ~2.5m. Unlike the nearly continuous rupture along the Çardak fault, the rupture zone of the Yeşilyurt Fault generally consists of a series of right-stepping en-echelon arrays of discontinuous sinistral fault traces of various lengths and stepovers that range between tens of meters to several hundred meters.https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-egu24-1335
