Strategic Communication and Metamodernism. Shall We Dance? Towards Complexity Beyond Linear Compromise
This article is the result of further joint reflection by the authors, building on their previous arguments that the shifts that gave rise to strategic communication as a discipline suggest linear compromises between modernism and postmodernism. It also provides a scrutiny of metamodernism as a contemporary academic agenda within a complexity framework, and explores whether strategic communication has to an extent not always shown elements of metamodernism. Following an analysis of key figures of metamodern thought and introducing the “dance” of the double pendulum as a metaphor, the authors discuss key challenges that metamodern thinking poses to strategic communication scholars. These require, among other things, a commitment to the species, ironic sincerity, a commitment to complexity on the problem as well as on the solution side, and a “both‒and” realist epistemology and constructionist epistemology at the same time. In conclusion, implications for strategic communication are put forward
Strategic Communication Futures: Paradigm and Practice in a Polycrisis World
This article responds to Nina Overton-de Klerk’s intervention that offers a critical and transdisciplinary overview of the current state of the discipline of strategic communication, and of its future potentials. Our critical engagement originates within the context of Overton-de Klerk’s intervention, published in the contemporary conjuncture of polycrisis. Our self-reflexive study examines the significance of the discipline in relation to the social and political economic concerns of the broader cultural and media studies paradigm. The interlinkages between these fields/disciplines are examined in interdisciplinary nodal relations rather than as separated modular conceptual units. The issue of disciplinary identity is then discussed within the contemporary South African research context. A key argument is that knowledge of the history of paradigms is necessary to make appropriate methodological choices in relation to the researcher’s own position within the contending paradigms. Some suggestions are offered for the way ahead that involve transdisciplinary approaches rather than modular epistemological separations
La subjectivation : un concept central de la sociologie clinique
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the concept of subjectivation, as it can be understood in clinical sociology. The aim is to justify the focus on this concept, preferred to that of the subject, and to emphasize its processual dimension. Subjectivation is defined as a process caught in multiple dialectical movements, linking therapeutic and political subjectivations, desubjectivation and resubjectivation, subjugation and emancipation, recognition of one\u27s desire and desire for recognition, determinism and freedom, meaning and action, and self-affirmation and destruction. This complicates the definition of subjectivation: it involves grasping the subjective shifts through which individuals seek to grasp and grasp the socio-psychological processes in which they are engaged, so that they can reclaim their agency and the meaning of their lived experiences by performing meaningful actions and by giving meaning to their actions. However, these dialectical movements break with a romantic conception of subjectivation, integrating into its understanding its precarious, fleeting, partial, indefinite, and ultimately interminable characteristics. Moreover, in order to grasp the socio-anthropological and psychological conditions of possibility for subjectivation processes, it seems heuristic to link this concept to those of historicity and negativity. Finally, a dialogue with the critical analysis of capitalist subjectivation proposed by Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval allows us to question the political and emancipatory scope of collaborative research mechanisms in clinical sociology.
For a racialized researcher, investigating racism can seem perilous from the perspective of the relationship to the object required by a scientific objectification approach. This reflexive article is based on an ethnography that links my biography to a clinical approach in order to access the racist experience of different racialized groups in France (social work students and residents of working-class neighborhoods). This approach, both reflexive and clinical, requires a patient and attentive construction of the conditions of enunciation of the experience in order to identify the tensions between identity for oneself and identity for others. It allows for the comparison of similar experiences, sometimes lived differently depending on life history and the frequency of racist offenses and attacks. The article\u27s theme questions the ambivalence of my ethnoracial identification with minority groups, a relationship that takes the form of a play of similar or discordant perceptions. Identity misalignments in the field are a particular source of reflexivity, especially since being racialized does not necessarily offer an epistemic advantage in accessing minority experiences. In a context of denial of systemic racism, transference and countertransference (Devereux, 1967) reflect the sharing of a stigmatized identity—a racialized self—with subjects who do not initially consider themselves racialized. These contrasting ways of recognizing oneself in the experience of racialization are the result of a differentiated learning of a racialized self, which is revealed or reinforced in the research interaction. Countertransference, in particular, made it possible to make a differentiated racial subjectivity visible.

Environmental Conservation Attributes Influencing the Adoption of Sustainable Energy Delivery: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Approach
The concept of meeting the present needs without impeding future generations\u27 needs is called sustainable development. Therefore, sustainable energy development is the pathway for every nation\u27s economic growth and development. The purpose of this article is assessing the influence of environmental conservation attributes in the delivery of sustainable energy delivery (SED) in the South African (SA) Power sector. A quantitative research approach was adopted for this study, with data gathered through a questionnaire survey instrument from participants using a purposive sampling technique. Collected data were analysed in four stages: data reliability and validity, descriptive statistics, principal component analysis, and model testing and fit statistics. The top picks environmental conservation attributes influencing the adoption of SED in the SA power sector: reduction of fossil fuel consumption, adoption of clean, environmentally friendly technology, use of cleaner energy facilities, efficient energy usage for less consumption, building institutional framework that supports sustainable energy delivery and the decrease of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). Therefore, to address the complex environmental challenges that have put the lives of billions of people at risk, society requires a viable investment and the political will, vision, and determination to embrace viable institutional policy change in the sustainable energy sector and the change necessary to secure our collective future. conclusively, it is important to note that renewable energy sources, low carbon emissions, resource conservation, biodiversity and reduced environmental degradation are the pathway to mitigating this existential problem facing humanity. This study contributes to secured energy development in South Africa and by extension the entire emerging economies globally. This study will directly improve the reduction of global warming, better public health, secure energy supply, poverty eradication, wealth creation and better educational system
Analysing Metropolitan Municipal Water Services Delivery Performance in South Africa: A Comparative Assessment of Household Access, Water Quality, and Households’ Satisfaction
This paper investigates the water service delivery performance of metropolitan municipalities in South Africa between 2022 and 2024. This enables an adequate understanding of the prevailing conditions of water service delivery in the metros and thus forms the basis for service enhancement intervention. Using a conceptual framework that combined principal-agent, equity, and public value theories, this study analyses a combination of secondary quantitative data on water service delivery performance across metropolitan municipalities in South Africa. The data was sourced from various government databases to pursue the study objectives of exploring water access, water quality, and households’ water service satisfaction. The findings revealed a significant disparity in the performance of the metros in water service delivery. While the City of Cape Town and Ekurhuleni demonstrated consistent water service excellence, Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay, and Mangaung struggled with incessant water interruptions and declining water safety. Despite the robust water infrastructure status as reported in WIQI, systemic challenges, such as leaking water pipes and institutional inefficiency, undermine reliable water service delivery among metros in South Africa. This paper thus concludes that for South Africa to effec-tively address the persistent water service delivery challenges confronting it and efficiently achieve SDG 6 by 2030, there is the need for crucial investment in water management technology, establish water service delivery taskforce across metros, invest in wastewater treatment technologies, establish a national water management training institute to regular provide trainings to metro staff. Lastly, inter-metro best practices sharing must be entrenched, while a public database with updated water performance data must be made available to support water research. These recommendations emphasise inter-metro collaboration, techno-logical integration, and policy reforms to address systemic gaps and enhance public satisfaction with water service delivery
Dune, outcrop, and pan sediments from the southern Kalahari Basin: A geoarchaeological case study from the Kgalagadi district, Botswana
Research from the southern Kalahari Basin (previously considered to be of limited Pleistocene archaeological significance) has provided evidence of human occupation. Surveys and excavations conducted in the Kgalagadi District near Tsabong in south-western Botswana have revealed a plethora of archaeological evidence. The region includes geomorphological features, including dunes, low quartzite hills, and pans. Duricrust formations are visible inside the pans. Previous research suggests that the pans form in topographical low points and likely already existed during the Pleistocene, while lunette dunes accumulated from deflated pan sediment during recent drying periods. However, in this region, these features have not been analysed in a geoarchaeological context, which can provide insight into the formation of archaeological sites. We investigated the mechanisms involved in the deposition of pan, dune, and sandy outcrop sediment by applying a multi-method analysis to thirty sediment samples. Analysis of pan samples reveals the presence of mostly intergrade duricrusts, with some calcretes present. Pan sediment containing fragmented ostracod valves in juvenile instars indicates post-mortem transport (taphocoenosis), and along with the diatoms (Campylodiscus sp.), are indicative of a brackish to saline water body. Inner dune samples share more similarities with pan sediments than with the red sand samples, as they contain higher concentrations of calcium oxide and some contain calcite and sepiolite. Particle size distributions change from unimodal in the outcrops and red dunes, to polymodal in the pans, suggesting that runoff during the wet season contributes to site formation. Sediment deflation by wind contributed to artefacts being exposed on the surfaces of the outcrops. This study therefore identifies three main site formation processes, namely deflation, runoff, and various duricrust formations, which provides insights into the environmental and climatic conditions that influenced human habitation in the Kalahari
KUPI Approach to Qur’an and Hadith Re-interpretation
Critical theory argues that knowledge is not value free. It is influenced by the interest, context, and background of the knowledge producers. Many books of tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis) have been written, primarily by men based on their experiences. These tafsirs are not free from male interest. As Farid Esack argues, classical tafsirs, mostly written by men, tend to be male-biased and discriminatory against women. Since the late 1990s, with the growing influence of global Muslim feminism, there have been increasing number of books in Indonesia that criticize the male-biased interpretations of the Qur’an and produce alternative readings from an equal gender perspective, such as those written by Nasaruddin Umar, Zaitunah Subhan, Nurjannah Ismail, Husein Muhammad, and many others. Recent works have been produced by Badriyah Fayumi, Nur Rofiah and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir, the leading founders and organizers of the Congress of Indonesian Women Ulama (KUPI). This article explores three new methodologies of tafsir developed in the current Indonesian context by three scholars: Badriyah Fayumi’s reading of maʿrūf (religiously, reasonably, and socially acceptable), Nur Rofiah’s concept of women’s haqiqi (real) justice, and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir hermeneutical approach of qirā’ah mubādalah (reciprocal reading). These new approaches to understanding Islamic sources were launched during KUPI II in 2022 to be KUPI’s methodology
