    No full text
A prominent public health concern is social networking addiction, particularly among young individuals. Adolescence is a time when people are more susceptible to mental illness, such as depression, sleep disturbances and insomnia. Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, and You Tube are a handful of these websites. This study examined the relationship between SNA and somatic and cognitive-affective depressive symptoms and sleep quality among emerging adults. The data was gathered offline using the incidental sampling method. A 40-item self-administered questionnaire was given to (N=421). The findings suggest that SNU is positively correlated with depressed symptoms, such as cognitive-affective and somatic symptoms, and substantially associated with sleep quality, which are important indicators psychological well-being in adults. The results demonstrated the effects of using these websites on young people and significant correlation between study variables. Sleep disorder among adults shows varying results. The study showed that Facebook was the leading app used by majority and ages ranging between 23-26 spent approximately 47% of their time using social media platforms. This study also provided an insight to learn how to utilize networking websites wisely. Limiting the timings of social media use could potentially help to combat this addiction

    Get PDF
Cross-dressing is considered to be an act of wearing clothes or accessories belonging to the ‘other’; gender with the purpose of disguise or expression. It has been a popular practice on the stage in the early ages to portray the female characters in the absence of an actress. But recent association of this term with homosexuality and `transvestism`; has changed the connotation. Even the mythological and historical context of cross-dressing has been relevant within the cultural practice and its representation in popular media. The term was used in 1911 by Edward Carpenter, mentioning, “Cross-dressing must be taken as a general indication of, and a cognate phenomenon to, homosexuality”. This paper of mine will look into the journey of the practice of cross dressing in our cultural practice and its representation in Bengali movies. The cinematographic space has been used to bring out the voice of the marginalised people of LGBTQA+ community. The paper will try to focus on the purpose of this practice through the lens of gender, performance and mythology. It will analyse the politics of body and choice of dressing with reference to ‘gender’ performance. Detailed discussion on the notion of gender and performance will be done with its relationship to queer representation. The cultural investigation on this will also reflect the narration of resistance, forbidden choice and discourse of identity. It is high time to question the concept of ‘cross dressing’ as it is deeply rooted in the discriminatory ideology of representing identity through dress, color or specific role play. The essence of Fashion and its fluidity is making the demarcation line bleak and vague with each passing day. In the age of pride parade, the discourse of cross-dressing and its relevance needs to be questioned and renegotiated. The paper will include the context of Bengali movies like Chitrangada, Arekti Premer Golpo, Samantaral, Nagarkirtan and others for evaluating the issues

Assessing all dimensions of food insecurity of older people is a fundamental requirement for planning and implementing welfare programmes to enhance food security of senior citizens and healthy ageing. While assessing the dimensions of food insecurity of senior citizens, additional aspects which are exclusively related to older people to be taken into account to have accurate information about the food insecurity of older people, and the additional aspects can be called the gerontology dimension.  Though there are several factors to justify assessing all dimensions of food insecurity of older persons as a fundamental requirement, the important factors are food security of senior citizens is one among several human rights and several governments have been failing to fulfil this human right, population ageing is a present worldwide phenomenon, the increasing trend in the old-age dependency ratio, food security of older people is fundamental requirement for achieving national development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), filial responsibility is eroding, and age-related discrimination and abuse are seen in several societies and nations, even in workplaces and families

Functioning of Sixth Schedule of Indian Constitution: A Study of Karbi Autonomous Council

    Get PDF
The constitutional provisions mentioned under the functioning of the 6th schedule allow the establishment of an autonomous administrative council for scheduled tribe regions. The paper analyses the functioning of the 6th in alignment with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The paper uses a qualitative approach for extensive data collection and analysis based on a thematic analysis strategy. The findings indicate that the 6th Schedule provides political and economic autonomy for KAAC. Adequate economic funds are also provided along with the judiciary, executive and legislative powers. The 30-member council is headed by the Governor, managing all areas of the district such as fisheries, waterways, road transport, primary and secondary education, hospitals, tourism and so on under Articles 244(2) and 275(1). The KAAC, since the time of its establishment, had contributed to policy-making related to the preservation of the political, economic and linguistic identity of the tribal community. However, the ongoing corruption and political dissonance have hindered the developmental process significantly. In conclusion, despite its contribution and constitutional support under the 6th Schedule, political corruption prevented the council from achieving its expected goals of obtaining political and economic strength and autonomy as an individual district of India

Emancipation to empowerment of scheduled castes: one step forward and two steps backward!

    Get PDF
The paper investigates the trajectory of Scheduled Castes (SC) in India since independence, spanning a period of seventy-five years. It delves into the historical context of their emancipation and subsequent endeavours towards empowerment. The study critically examines the efficacy of affirmative action policies, reservation systems, and social welfare initiatives in uplifting the socio-economic status of SC communities.  Throughout the years, these affirmative actions have undoubtedly brought about some progress and positive changes in the lives of SCs. Improved access to education, job opportunities, and political representation has allowed for a degree of social mobility and empowerment. However, the paper also brings to light the persisting challenges and setbacks that have hindered the attainment of true empowerment and social justice for SCs in contemporary India.  Despite the advances, discrimination and prejudice against SCs continue to prevail in various aspects of society. Limited access to quality education and employment opportunities still inhibit their upward mobility. Social welfare programs, although well-intentioned, have encountered implementation issues, often resulting in insufficient benefits reaching the intended beneficiaries. Additionally, the paper explores how the prevalence of caste-based prejudices has led to atrocities against SCs, posing a significant obstacle to their full emancipation. The study underscores the need for a comprehensive and nuanced approach to address the multifaceted challenges faced by SCs. It suggests a re-evaluation and strengthening of affirmative action policies, a targeted focus on educational and economic empowerment, and the eradication of caste-based discrimination through robust social reforms.  &nbsp

Origins of Democracy in Buddhist India

    Get PDF
Aryan/Western Eurocentric political theoreticians and philosophers manufactured a striking historical legend that democracy, as we know it today, is the product of Ancient Greece, primarily Athens, as the ubiquitous place of origin. Scholarly work studying and interpreting Athenian democracy and its facets thoroughly and comprehensively examined and exaggerated the most impressive widespread conviction that democracy originated in ancient Greece. These writers on the origins of democracy asserted that the experience of democracy in ancient Greek city-states is the only worthwhile historical model of democratic experience that they invented for the modern world.  The powerful principle of universal inclusion and incorporation emerged as the most significant single legacy from the ruins of ancient Buddhist India. Humanity was not just a spiritual or moral endowment but rather a total collective that nevertheless respected the distinctive attributes of its members. The Sangha is a consolidation of the process of humanising that all the people of the world are human and there is only one definition of all humans and each of one that is rational the Eightfold Noble thoughts path the rich universal resonance of humanity to be entire
