Ambedkar Meets Tilak: Debating the Meaning of the Bhagavad Gita

    Get PDF
Much has been written about the debate between Ambedkar and Gandhi concerning the real meaning of the Bhagavad Gita since the publication of Riddles of Hinduism. Comparatively, however, the discursive encounter between Tilak and Ambedkar has not been so fortunate enough to receive similar public or even academic attention. Considering this as a lacuna in the existing philosophical scholarship on the Bhagavad Gita, the present paper attempts to engage critically the ideas of Lokmanya Tilak and Ambedkar concerning historical transmissibility, authorship and the politics of interpretation as presented in Srimad Bhagadgita-Rahasya and “The Philosophic Defence of the Counter-Revolution: Krishna and His Gita” respectively

Disparities in Productive Capacities and Development in Uttar Pradesh: A District-Level Study

    Get PDF
The present study attempts an assessment of districts in Uttar Pradesh in terms of their productive capacities and potential for structural transformation. A composite index of district-level productive capacities is constructed using a two-step methodology based on aggregation of five subindices that are constructed using Principal Component Analysis and using district-level data on 32 variables that cover five dimensions encompassing sectoral resources and infrastructural linkages that enhance productive capacities. The results indicate significant disparities in productive capacities across districts by quintile groups and regions. Many districts in Eastern and Bundelkhand region have low productive capacities in comparison with districts in Western and Central regions of Uttar Pradesh. The results also show positive and significant correlations between the constructed district capacity index and district-level indicators namely per capita net domestic product and district share in net domestic product indicating that enhancing productive capacities is crucial for development. The constructed subindices are useful in identifying the relative strengths and weaknesses of districts in the five dimensions and indicate the scope and underlying potential for transformation. District and region-specific policies that focus on diversifying productive capacities can spur economic growth and reduce regional disparities

Domestic Violence Against Men in India: A Critical Analysis with Special Reference to Indian Laws

    Get PDF
Laws that discriminate against women exacerbate the situation. Everyone experiences violence, regardless of gender, yet the frequency can differ. This fact cannot be ignored. The future lies in gender-neutral legislation. Instead, one alternative is divorce under section 13 of the Hindu Marriage Act, which establishes an acceptable reason for divorce if the petitioner is treated cruelly after the solemnization of marriage. Men do not have clear protections against domestic Violence or abuse. Discussions of domestic abuse frequently centre on women. It is always presumed that a man is the perpetrator. But because of contemporary socio-economic trends that impact family structures, men are now also victims of domestic abuse. Verbal, physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse of men is common. Men are silent victims because they don't report this detrimental behaviour, making them the quiet victims. Indian domestic violence laws prioritise protecting women over men. It gives the false impression that men are only capable of committing crimes and cannot be victims. Domestic Violence against men is becoming more commonplace. This paper aims to analyse domestic Violence against males and the laws in India that deal with it. It attempts to investigate the judicial tendency in domestic violence legislation that favours men and makes reforms that would be helpful to Indian victims of domestic Violence. Laws must be gender-neutral. By raising awareness and dispelling misconceptions and legislation should be changed to recognise domestic Violence or abuse against men effectively. Males support communities and families emotionally. According to studies, Violence and its stigma impact men's ability to participate in and contribute to their communities. It is pervasive across all cultures, social classes, and age groups. It involves Violence in marriage relationships, live-in relationships, Violence against other family members, and Violence between husbands and wives.

Testing Market Efficiency: An Empirical Study on Sectoral Reaction to Union Budget Announcement

    Get PDF
The present empirical study examined the market efficiency within the context of sectoral reactions surrounding Union Budget Announcements. The researcher aimed to assess how quickly and efficiently sectoral indices adjust to new information presented in the Union Budget. For the study, daily closing prices of sectoral indices were observed to test the Efficient Market Hypothesis. A 15 days event window had been employed to calculate the abnormal returns of the selected index around budget announcements and to assess the level of significance, t-test was applied. The study found that the majority of event days exhibit abnormal returns lacking statistical significance, aligning with the principles of semi-strong form efficiency. This research uniquely focused on assessing market efficiency specifically during the Union Budget announcement. Additionally, existing studies analysing stock market reactions have predominantly centred on main market indicators, lacking a comprehensive examination of sectoral responses. This study fills a gap by providing a more in-depth analysis of sector-specific reactions to the Union Budget

Ante-Nuptial Conventions Under the Portuguese Civil Code in Force in The State of Goa: Can It Be a Model for The Uniform Civil Code?

    Get PDF
Divorce proceedings are not just about the dissolution of marriage and separation of parties, but also include various other issues to be resolved. These issues include separation of assets, alimony, maintenance, custody of children, et cetera. In India, the disposal of matrimonial causes takes years. Also, the amount of maintenance and alimony to be paid is left to the discretion of the judges. As it is almost impossible to lay down a perfect arithmetical formula, the amount of maintenance or alimony that is granted by the courts is mostly considered unjust and unfair. Also, the prevalent religion-oriented personal laws prevalent in India are gender-biased and discriminatory against the women. One way to protect the future interests of the parties to the marriage is to grant them liberty at the time of their marriage, to pre-determine their individual and separate rights and liabilities in the properties held by them individually and/or jointly during the subsistence of marriage or at the time of divorce.  This is to ensure that the parties have some sort of certainty and predictability about their respective share or right in the family, joint or self-acquired properties on dissolution of marriage. On this note, the researcher seeks to examine the law on pre-nuptial agreements as provided in the Portuguese Civil Code, which is in force in the state of Goa, India. The researcher is conducting the instant research so as to give suggestions to the legislature, which is apparently in the process of enacting the much-awaited Uniform Civil Code as contemplated under Article 44 of the Constitution of India.

How Partition In 1947 Impacted the Culinary Culture of India? A Historical Discussion on The Shared Culinary Practices Across the Border

    Get PDF
Partition of India was an egregious mishappening, in which a million perished and about twelve million lay displaced. The history of partition is full of accounts of sorrow, communal hatred, and unabated violence. However, the arduous migratory journeys across the two sides of the border and subsequent exchange of population between India and two wings of newly formed Pakistan, also led to massive cultural exchange. The moment of acute survival instinct on the part of sufferers, not only caused acceptance of other culture’s cuisines, but also gave birth to culinary experimentation. This article hereby, attempts to enrich the culinary history of India by discovering some regional recipes, having its roots in Pakistan and carried on by the refugees as a symbol of partition legacy. This article fills in the research gap in hitherto partition studies, by treating culinary practice as a tool of social memory. This paper also looks into such recipes from the prism of present-day soft diplomacy and popular food culture in India

    Get PDF
Hydropower development projects lead to the forced relocation of millions of individuals belonging to indigenous tribes, which has serious consequences for marginalized populations. Hydroelectric projects have transnational repercussions, impacting indigenous tribes in multiple nations. Hydropower, although its benefits in terms of renewable energy production, also has significant negative impacts on populations that are forced to relocate. (Vancleef, 2016). The matter of relocation and rehabilitation in relation to hydropower development is intricate and diverse. The state of Himachal Pradesh in India has great potential for hydro-power development. Himachal Pradesh is confronting similar issues to those encountered by Uttarakhand. Specially, the Kinnaur, a tribal district has been a focus point for hydropower development because to its enormous river resources and topographical benefits. The study aims to examine the rehabilitation and resettlement issues encountered by people affected by projects in the area. It seeks to explore the rehabilitation and development approaches necessary to build resilient communities in Kinnaur amidst hydropower developments. Additionally, the study will propose Social Work Interventions aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods in the study area. This study is based on original field research conducted in two development blocks, Nichhar and Kalpa, within Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. The research included 60 participants selected through random sampling from Nichhar and Kalpa, areas affected by the Shongtong (450 MW) and Karchham-Wangtu (1000 MW) hydro power projects respectively. The findings of the study shows that many affected individuals lack awareness of available infrastructure like community centre, educational institutes and health centers under the Resettlement and Rehabilitation policy. The project has severely impacted tribal livelihoods, making them insecure about accessing common resources
