From Literary to Visual: Exploring Fidelity and Creative Freedom in The Guide and The White Tiger
The study of the adaptation of literature into films has fascinated scholars and critics across the globe and the issue of fidelity has been at the centre stage of these studies. The extent to which a film faithfully follows the story, characters, concepts, and style of the source text is known as fidelity. A faithful adaptation tries to preserve the essence of the source material. Due to inherent differences in film and literature, adapting a literary text into a film demands significant changes. Filmmaking is essentially about profit making, therefore, the filmmakers make necessary modifications in the plot, characterization, setting, etc. considering audience expectations, budget constraints, and creative challenges. This research paper explores the challenges of fidelity aspect in film adaptations focusing on the case studies of The Guide and The White Tiger and the intrinsic similarities and differences between literature and film. Using adaptation theory as a theoretical framework, this research will demonstrate how fidelity can be a limiting as well as liberating concept and explore alternative approaches to evaluate and appreciate film adaptations.

A Sip of ‘O’ amid Celebrations: A Sociological Study on the Influence of Alcoholic Beverages among Apatani Adolescents
Alcoholic beverages among tribal populations are an integral part of the culture. Arunachal Pradesh known for its rich culture and food habits traditionally prepares rice beer holding socio-cultural significance for generations. This is also true for the Apatani tribe of Ziro Valley, where preparation and consumption of rice beer, locally known as ‘O’ is used during various ritualistic performance, social gatherings and festivals such as Murung, Myoko, and Dree etc. Today along with locally brewed alcohol, the valley is witnessing a transition towards popularization of factory-made alcohol as many wine shops and bars are being established day by day. This has utmost implications for the younger generations, especially adolescents group. Commercialization of alcohols has further introduced new dynamics leading to availability and accessibility of alcohols among adolescents. Thus, this paper deals with the evolving dynamics of alcohol consumption, its prevalence and impact on adolescents focusing on traditional festivals and modern influences. The study employs mixed-method approach with quantitative and qualitative methods, using survey as well as in-depth interviews with key informants and descriptive approach to analyse the narratives of the respondents. The findings indicate adolescents often initiate alcohol consumption at a young age due to factors such as imitating parents, siblings, as well as a coping mechanism towards loneliness and peer pressure. Though consuming alcohol among adolescents may seem like a phase that shall eventually pass, it has detrimental repercussions highlighted in the study

GST And Constitutional Federalism in India: A Critical Analysis of Article 246a's Impact on Centre-State Fiscal Relations
This study explores the impact of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on fiscal federalism in Kerala, focusing on its implications for revenue generation, tax collection, and inter-state trade dynamics. It analyzes the dual GST model, which enables both the Union and States to impose taxes concurrently, but highlights the challenges posed by inconsistencies in tax rates across states. By examining the cost disparity between intra-state and inter-state transactions, the study identifies potential barriers to inter-state trade, as businesses may favor intra-state transactions to avoid higher integrated GST (IGST) rates. The research also delves into the legal framework of GST, questioning the sufficiency of Article 246A in addressing issues of repugnancy between central and state laws. The study calls for a more harmonized GST system to foster economic integration, reduce tax arbitrage, and clarify legislative authority in resolving conflicts between central and state GST laws. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, suggesting the need for further reforms to enhance the efficiency and equity of the GST system. Future research can expand these analyses to other states, contributing to the broader discourse on fiscal federalism in India.Top of FormBottom of For
Satisfaction with Life and Happiness among Young Adults and Retired Elderly Adults in Bangalore City
Due to significant advancements in science and technology, particularly in the field of health sciences, older adults are a demographic that is becoming more and more prevalent in the modern world. An issue facing the world is the growing number of elderly people, and the government needs to focus more on this demography. In 2019, Sourour Y et.al. Life satisfaction has recently been proposed as the best indicator of the quality of life. Individual experiences in the outside world led to a deep and universal inner contentment known as life satisfaction. It expresses the individual's optimistic view of life and reflects their emotions towards the past, present, or future. Akarsu TN, Yeniaras V.(2017). Older persons with more life satisfaction also seem to engage more in health-promoting practices. Vijayakumar G, et.al.(2016). Life satisfaction (LS) correlates with various factors. They examined 141 empirical studies on young people's life satisfaction. According to C.L. Proctor et.al. (2009), research generally shows that children who are happy with their lives report better social and interpersonal connections, engage in healthier activities, and act less violently and antisocially. Everyone has the right to happiness, which is a universal value that everyone strives for. It has been underlined that an individual's sense of coherence affects this crucial health indicator. Lee T.S.H., and Chiang, H.H.,(2018). Presently individuals have developed a heightened interest in happiness as an objective. Numerous factors correlate with happiness in older persons. This particular study's objective was to evaluate life satisfaction and happiness among retired elderly persons compared to young adults. The sample had 120 participants, including 60 older persons, and 60 young adults. The sample consisted of people from Bangalore City. The researcher personally interacted with older and younger persons to administer the life satisfaction and Oxford Happiness questionnaire. A purposive sample design was selected for the investigation. The mean, standard deviation, and t-value were calculated using suitable statistical methods. The findings indicated a substantial disparity in life satisfaction and happiness between older and younger persons. A notable gender disparity was observed concerning life satisfaction and happiness.
History On/Of Oars: Contextualising the Genesis of Aquatic Networks in British Malabar
Malabar, which was a part of colonial Madras Presidency, had adorned an important position in the mercantile history of the British in the West Coast. The region, once ruled by mutually competing petty ruling houses, came to the imperial yoke of the British in the backdrop of Mysorean and English conflict. Even before the coming of the British in the region, it already had a space in the mercantile activities. The agricultural production in the eastern part of the district had attracted Westerly attentions and even the Portuguese anchored this littoral tract to reap the fruits of the trade fortunes. The British too had followed those footsteps and they made it as a trade emporium in the western coast. The British could make substantial profit from Malabar trade. In the initial years they had used the then prevailed riverine channels for commodity transportation. There were hue and cry for the strengthening of these riverine channels into aquatic networks for the smooth and easy flow of commercial products. Despite their initial hesitation, the colonial state made certain remarkable construction in Malabar. Such constructions made Malabar as an epitome of aquatic network. Certain British officials and bureaucrats have played a crucial role in the emergence of aquatic networks in Malabar
Electoral Promises and Voter Preferences in Assam: Freebies vs. Issue-Based Commitments
This study employs the Assam assembly elections of 2016 and 2021 as benchmarks to examine voter preferences for freebies in comparison to issue-based pledges. This study's main research questions are how much do freebie promises affect the voters of Assam's preferences compared to issue based commitments and what do voters of Assam prefer when it comes to choosing between welfare and development commitments and promises of freebies? Based on these questions, the study proposes an argument that long-term developmental promises are more important to the voters of Assam than freebie promises, which stimulate short-term voter interest. This study utilises surveys with a structured questionnaire as its major data collection method. Based on population and urban-rural classification, information was gathered from 400 respondents in four districts of Assam namely Kamrup (M), Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Dhubri. The results demonstrate that although voters give governance-related concerns like healthcare, education, the economy, and illegal immigration top priority, they also clearly favour welfare-oriented giveaways that provide long-term advantages over immediate handouts. This study advances our knowledge of voter reasoning and decision-making in Assam's electoral democracy by examining these processes
