Causal Relationship Between Awareness of Women and Demand for Equal Right to Inherit Agricultural Land in India:  An Empirical Study

    Get PDF
Women's ownership of agricultural land is extremely poor in India and globally. Various factors are responsible for this disparity, and one of the primary reasons concluded by previous research is unawareness on the part of women. In all research conducted at the ground level, a significant barrier to implementing the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act of 2005 is that women are unaware of their rights in agricultural land and the bureaucratic process of land transfer. Thus, the researchers undertake this research to prove or disprove the above findings with the same population and questions but with different profiles. The respondents in this study are Hindu women who are highly educated and well aware of their legal rights. They are all highly educated, have a law background, and understand the decisive role of the Amendment Act 2005. This empirical study gathers the views of women working in the field of law regarding their rights to inherit agricultural land and the challenges they face while they demand their rights. The research concludes that there is too much disparity among women in awareness about their rights in property as amended by the Hindu Succession (Amendment Act) 2005. The interesting thing is that women who have a law background hesitate in claiming their rights as they think it may destroy their relationship with relatives

    Get PDF
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has played a pivotal role in rural development in India by providing wage employment and improving the livelihoods of rural populations. This study critically examines the performance of MGNREGA in terms of social inclusion through providing wage employment to the marginalized communities like SC, ST and Women in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, from 2014 to 2023, focusing on employment trends, program inclusivity, and the structural challenges impacting its effectiveness. The analysis covers key factors such as job card issuance, active workers, employment days, and financial expenditure, with particular emphasis on the effects of the district reorganization in 2021. The findings reveal that while MGNREGA has made significant contributions to rural welfare, issues such as declining participation and inefficiencies in resource allocation have been exacerbated by administrative restructuring, highlighting the need for reforms to address these structural challenges and ensure more inclusive development

A Tale of Tragedy and Triumph: Mapping the Impact of Cholera on Kashmir’s Changing Landscape

    Get PDF
The inextricable link between humans and diseases is undeniable; no individual is entirely immune to illness. While diseases can range from mild to fatal, their spread within a population is influenced by numerous factors, including environmental conditions. Climate change, characterized by shifts in temperature, precipitation, and extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, and droughts, exacerbates the proliferation of infectious diseases. One such devastating disease is cholera, which has historically led to significant mortality rates. In the context of Kashmir, cholera has been a formidable threat, with the potential to claim thousands of lives. This paper contends that the cholera epidemic has left a lasting impact on Kashmiri society, fundamentally altering its sociological and environmental landscape. By examining Kashmir’s historical trajectory from the early medieval period to the Dogra rule this study argues that the region’s once-pristine environment and peaceful existence were violently disrupted by recurrent cholera outbreaks. Understanding these historical ramifications is crucial in framing contemporary public health strategies and mitigating future outbreaks in Kashmir and beyond

    Get PDF
This study investigates impact of the Duare Sarkar programme, a flagship governance initiative, launched by the Government of West Bengal (India) in December 2020, to ensure doorstep delivery of public services in West Bengal. Conducted in a single block of Bankura district, the research adopts basically qualitative interviews to evaluate citizens’ experiences with selected services, including Lakshmir Bhandar, Swasthya Sathi, ration card services, caste certificates, old age pensions, and land-related services. Findings reveal a high level of citizen satisfaction, particularly with the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, which was successfully accessed by all surveyed beneficiaries. Health, ration, and pension services were also widely appreciated for their efficiency. However, significant dissatisfaction was observed in land-related services, attributed to bureaucratic delays and uncooperative departmental staff. Although the localized scope of the study limits its generalizability, it offers critical insights into both the successes and service delivery gaps within the Duare Sarkar framework. The paper concludes by recommending targeted administrative reforms, digital inclusion strategies, and expanded research to build a more equitable and effective public service delivery model.

Linking Stock Selection Criteria to Perceived Investment Success: An Equity Market Perspective

    Get PDF
In the Dynamic Retail Investment Context, it is important to know how stock selection criteria correlate with investor satisfaction and perceived success. The current research examines the effects of three commonly known stock selection approaches—Fundamental Analysis, Technical Analysis, and Peer Pressure—on perceived investment outcomes, in terms of satisfaction with expected returns, risk management confidence, and satisfaction with investment decisions. The research applies theories of behavior and decision-making to formulate and empirically test a conceptual model, using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with a sample of 312 equity investors. The model demonstrates the differential effect of different selection processes on investors' perception. Technical analysis is the strongest predictor of returns satisfaction, indicating that investors desire short-term, empirical measures of their perceived success. Fundamental analysis strongly boosts confidence in risk-taking and decision satisfaction overall but paradoxically demonstrates a negative correlation with satisfaction for returns, and this can be attributed to conservative expectations or delayed outcomes. Social pressure provides poor affective support and has minimal influence on perceived returns or self-confidence, indicating the limitations of investment behavior based on social forces. The results highlight the psychological factors in investing and the necessity of balancing strategies with temperament of investors. The study offers practical implications for policymakers, platforms, and education about finance, who want to promote informed and confident investment participation by retail investors. The research contributes to the knowledge on how investors evaluate success in volatile equity markets by combining both analytical and behavioral factors

Hashtags, VPNs, and Youth Rage: Social Media in Nepal’s Gen Z Protest

    Get PDF
Grounded on Karl Marx's conflict theory and Manuel Castell's networked age social movement, the present study is an attempt to examine the role of digital platforms as a tool to counter the media monopoly of the states, shape narratives, and foster collective consciousness in the Gen-Z-led protest mobilization in Nepal. By engaging in qualitative digital ethnography, we argue how social media and digital tools empowered the activists by enabling them to bypass the state censorship, helping them to coordinate and organize the movement. The Gen Z protest in Nepal also demonstrates how political instability and inefficiency failed the youth's aspirations, culminating in an uprising resulting in the collapse of the government.

Understanding UPI Adoption Among Elderly Users: A Behavioural Perspective

    Get PDF
The proliferation of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become a cornerstone of India's financial sector transformation, playing a vital role in its journey towards a cashless economy. UPI facilitates the transfer of money in real time between bank accounts using mobile applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, Paytm, and others. While UPI has seen widespread adoption across various demographics in India, the older population remains critical in addressing barriers, fostering digital literacy, and ensuring inclusivity in the digital payment ecosystem. Thus, in this study we have studied the impact of various behavioural factors on adoption of UPI among elderly people. The sample consists of elder UPI users i.e. individuals who are above 60 years of age. Data was collected by conducting a field survey questionnaire completed by 153 respondents from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India.  The findings suggest that benefits associated with using UPI, ease of using UPI and the potential risk of losing money due to the sharing of personal information are the most important factors influencing behaviour to use UPI among elderly users. Elderly users are more inclined to adopt UPI if they believe it improves their financial transactions and find it user-friendly. However, concerns about transaction risks, such as security, play a key role in hindering adoption

Growth Instability and Changing Land Use Pattern in India

    Get PDF
This study explores land use trends and instabilities in India, focusing on Annual Average Growth Rates (AAGR) across various categories. It highlights the interplay between socio-economic and environmental factors shaping these changes. Mixed growth patterns in reporting areas suggest expanded statistical coverage in positive rates and reduced reporting in negative ones. Forest cover trends reveal ecological shifts, where growth signifies reforestation, and declines indicate deforestation. Urbanization and industrialization drive consistent growth in land under non-agricultural uses, while improved land rehabilitation reduces barren and unculturable land. Geographical constraints impact land unavailable for cultivation, with positive growth signifying increased unavailability. Changes in pastures and tree crops reflect land competition and diversification efforts. Reductions in culturable wasteland stem from reclamation, while shifts in fallow lands and current fallows align with agricultural cycles and climate influences. Indicators like net area sown and total cropped area reveal intensified agricultural practices, where positive trends denote expanded cultivation and negative rates highlight challenges like land degradation and water scarcity. Agricultural land trends emphasize the need to balance productivity with conservation. This study underscores the complexity of land use changes, stressing the importance of sustainable management strategies to address competing demands. Policymakers must optimize land use, boost productivity, and conserve environmental resources to achieve balanced development. By examining growth instability and land use dynamics, the study provides critical insights into India’s evolving socio-economic and environmental landscape, advocating for informed strategies to ensure sustainable development
