    भारत में विश्व की 17.76 प्रतिशत मानव जनसंख्या और 11.54 प्रतिशत पशुधन (दुनिय की 56.7 प्रति शत भैंस, 20.4 प्रति शत छोटे जुगाली करने वाले जानवर, 12.5 प्रति शत मवेशी, 3.1 प्रति शत मुर्गी) रहते हैं, जो दुनिय ा के मात्र 2.4 प्रति शत भूभाग पर स्थि त है। विश्व की तुलना में भारत में प्रति व्यक्ति भूमि की उपलब्धता बहुत कम है, यानि विश्व में प्रति व्यक्ति भूमि उपलब्धता 1.75 हेक्टेय र की तुलना में भारत में प्रति व्यक्ति भूमि उपलब्धता 0.23 हेक्टेय र है। जनसंख्या दबाव, भूमि और पानी की माँग में तेजी से वृद्धि और इसके परिणामस्वरूप प्राकृति क संसाधनों का क्रमि क क्षरण पारिस्थिति की तंत्र और पर्यावरण के लचीलेपन को प्रभावित कर रहा है। मानव बस्तिय ों और मूल ढांचे का विस्ता र, कृषि और संबद्ध गतिव िधिय ों का तेज होना और सीमांत क्षेत्रों और कोमल पारिस्थिति क तंत्रों में उनकी घुसपैठ भूमि संसाधन की एकीकृत योजना और प्रबंधन की तत्का ल माँग करती है

With a cultivable area of over 157 million hectares—second only to the United States—and the pressing need to ensure both food and ecological security for a growing population, agriculture must evolve rapidly. The sector is confronting interlinked challenges: soil degradation, erratic weather patterns due to climate change, falling groundwater levels, and increasing air and water pollution.
