Agricultural Engineers and Indian Agriculture
Introduction The production and productivity in Indian agriculture cannot be enhanced by primitive and traditional practices of farming. The average farm size in India is small (1.08 ha) and small and marginal land holdings (less than 2.0 ha) account for 86% of land holdings. The population dynamics shows that by the year 2047, the population of agricultural workers in the country will be about 202 million (26% of total workers) of which 60% will be the female workers. Thus, there is going to be a significant role of farm women workers in country’s agricultural production. With continued shrinkage in average farm size, more farms will fall into the adverse category thereby making individual ownership of agricultural machinery progressively more uneconomical

Effect of drying and packaging on storability of stevia leaves (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni)
Fresh stevia leaves (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) were dried by open sun drying, mechanical drying at 50, 60 and 70°C and green house (simple and with north wall reflection) drying methods. The dried samples were packaged in airtight high density polyethene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) jars and stored at ambient conditions. The effect of drying and packaging on storability were evaluated on the basis of quality parameters such as colour, total soluble solids (TSS), total sugar, ash and moisture content. It was observed from the study that the fresh stevia leaves dried by mechanical drying at 60o for 210 min, packaged in HDPE package can be stored under ambient condition for more than three months as the quality was maintained with moisture content (9.43%); total sugar (8.88%); ash content (6.76%); total soluble solids (9.79%) and overall acceptability (78±2.49%). Packaging material, storage period, storage condition and drying method had a significant effect on the different quality parameters and shelf life of stevia leaves
Characterization, Activation, and Life Cycle Analysis of Rice Husk Biochar
Rice husk is generated in abundance in India, and requires efficient utilization for sustainable management of agricultural residues. Traditionally, farmers burn rice husks, which leads to environmental degradation. Biochar production offers an effective waste management solution, mitigating climate change concerns. For a thorough characterization, modification, and assessment on environmental impacts of biochar, a study on production of rice husk biochar using vacuum pyrolysis at three different temperatures, followed by chemical activation with KOH was carried out. Lifecycle assessment (LCA) of biochar and activated biochar was conducted using SimaPro software TRACI 2.1 method. Highest yield of biochar of 33.75%, was observed at 500°C. The activated rice husk biochar produced at 700ºC had calorific value of 23.13 MJ kg-1, surface area of 334.71 m2 g-1 and pore volume of 1.15 cm3 g-1. The global warming potential and ozone layer depletion for activated biochar production was found to be 24.3 tonnes of CO2eq and 0.728 x 10-3 kg CFC-11eq, respectively. Recycling of 50% KOH can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 16.3% and cumulative energy demand (CED) from 92 to 75.1 MWh for Re (KOH). Higher pyrolysis temperatures had significant environmental impact due to generation of higher proportion of syngas, which reduced biochar production

Farm Mechanization for Smallholder Farmers in India: Prospects and Challenges
Farm mechanization plays a crucial role in enhancing agricultural productivity, reducing labor dependency, and improving rural livelihoods, especially for smallholder farmers. However, its adoption is hindered by economic constraints, inadequate infrastructure, limited technical knowledge, and policy gaps. While developed regions in India have embraced mechanization, smallholder farmers still rely on traditional tools due to high machinery costs and limited access to credit. Successful models such as Crop Residue Management (CRM) and NICRA’s farm implement banks demonstrate that innovative approaches, including custom hiring centers (CHCs), cooperative ownership, and digital rental platforms, can significantly improve mechanization access. Additionally, promoting women-friendly and climate-smart technologies, such as solar-powered irrigation and conservation agriculture, ensures sustainability and inclusivity. Strengthening government subsidies, public-private partnerships, and farmer training programs is essential for expanding mechanization. Collaborative efforts among governments, private enterprises, and farming communities can create an enabling environment for smallholder farmers, ultimately boosting productivity and ensuring food security. By addressing key barriers and leveraging emerging opportunities, mechanization can transform small-scale farming, making it more efficient, sustainable, and resilient to climate challenges
