Innovation in Livestock: Going Beyond the Possible
It is deja vu, or should we say, deja moo. We are importing our own native Gir, the pride of our cattle breeds, from Brazil. And it was India that had provided these cattle to Brazil way back in 1849 via the USA. Out there, our Gir yields an average of around 50 litres of milk a day, compared to a measly 5/6 litres back home. There is no great mystery behind this radical performance improvement. While, aiming for improved productivity, Brazil chose the path of innovation, we focused on preservation of the purity of our breed. As a result, the biggest exporter of the native Indian breed Gir is Brazil. We have now woken up to the significance of productivity in dairy economics, and in a twist of irony, we too are importing the Gir germplasm from Brazil. Generation of wealth from outer sheath of banana pseudo stem through package of equipment for rope making1
Out of 14-18 sheaths available in banana pseudostem, outer 6-8 sheath give coarse fibre and rest yield fine fibres. Ropes from banana pseudostem are in high demand for different applications, but production is labour intensive. Hand spinning is very tedious and slow method. Ratting machine needs a lot of space to operate. Further, production by both these methods lead to non-uniform twisting and inferior finishing. Package of equipment consists of equipment for splitting outer sheath and equipment for twisting and winding of splitted strands. Cost economic analysis of package of equipment depicted a saving in cost and labour to a tune of 65 and 70 %, respectively. Sustainable Water Resource Planning of Aunlajore Watershed Using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System
Geospatial Techniques like Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques were used for water resource planning of Aunlajore micro-watershed in Sundergarh block of Sundergarh district, Odisha (India). Satellite imagery, toposheet together with field verification were used as the data source for the water resource planning. Thematic maps of land use/ land cover, slope and drainage using satellite imagery data and survey of India (SOI) toposheet were prepared and integrated all these maps under GIS environment to prepare the water resource management plans for the study area. Five number of farm ponds are proposed for water resource development of the microwatershed. Different soil and water conservation structures like four staggered trenches, three nos of loose boulder structures, four diversion bunds, four watershed pond, four water harvesting structures, one field bund and five percolation tanks are proposed in the water resource action plan for erosion control and groundwater recharge and overall development of water resource in the micro-watershed. The study will be helpful in identification of sites for construction of different soil and water conservation structures like water harvesting structures, check dams, farm ponds, percolation tanks, nala bunds etc. The study will be helpful in sustainable development of the natural resources including soil and water of the watershed with the proper implementation of the proposed action plans
Development and Performance Evaluation of High Insulation Box Type Solar Cooker
This paper presents the design, development and performance evaluation of high insulation box type solar cooker. The solar cooker is capable of boiling food for five persons per day. Stagnation test and the water boiling test of the solar cooker were performed during April, 2017. The resulting values of first figure of merit (F1), second figure of merit (F2) and standardized cooking power (Ps) was 0.1200C, 0.424 and 45 W, respectively, which categorized the cooker as class A. This high insulation solar cooker was found to have high values of F1 and F2 (F1>0.12 and F2>0.40) during different seasons of the year. The overall efficiency of the high insulation box type solar cooker was 26.5%. The cooker is estimated to save 1293.8 MJ of energy per year. The cost of the cooker is INR 4500.00. The payback period of the solar cooker as compared to firewood, electricity, coal, LPG and kerosene based cooking was estimated to be 1.49, 1.94, 2.42, 3.12 and 6.99 years, respectively. The high insulation box type solar cooker can reduce about 815.30 kg of CO2 emission on annual basis
Methyl Ester of Cottonseed Oil Blended with Ethanol as a Renewable Fuel on a Multi-cylinder CI Engine
A renewable fuel has advantages of saving the petroleum fuel and make environment pollution free when used on an engine. Different blends of the methyl ester of cottonseed oil with ethanol in the proportion of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50 were prepared and compared with high speed diesel on the performance of a multi-cylinder CI engine. A 37.3 kW variable speed diesel engine was tested for performance on reference diesel fuel and selected blends. Engine performance on the blend containing 10 per cent ethanol in terms of brake power, indicated mean effective pressure, brake specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature was almost equal or had better performance than diesel. On an average, brake thermal efficiency was increased up to 10% as ethanol blending ratio increased in the methyl ester of cottonseed oil (at 10% ethanol mix) at full load condition
