Deep placement of fertilizer has not only a positive agronomic and socioeconomic impact, but also an environmental benefit. A Deep Fertilizer Placement Machine was evaluated for uniformity of fertilizer application at different level of urea briquette in fertilizer box. Various physical and engineering properties of urea briquette viz. size, shape, bulk density, briquette weight, angle of repose and coefficient of friction were measured for design and selection of machine components. The calibration of machine was done at three peripheral speed of ground wheel (3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 km h-1) and four different level of fill (full, 3/4th, half and 1/4th) of fertilizer box. The performance of machine was best at 4.5 km h-1 peripheral speed of ground wheel and fertilizer box filled up to 3/4th level. The field evaluation data revel that approximately 51 number of urea briquette per row were dropped in 15 m distance with average spacing of 301.4 mm with standard deviation of 90 mm among the spacing of dropped urea briquette. The observed miss index, multiple index, quality feed index and precision index of machine was 0.06, 0.06, 0.89 and 0.11 respectively. The effective field capacity of machine was 0.71 ha h-1 with average working width of 1.94 m. The fertilizer application rate, average draft requirement, field efficiency and fuel consumption during field evaluation of machine was observed as 186 kg ha-1, 656 kg, 80.75 % and 2.9 l h-1 respectively

A retractable solar dryer to aid self-reliance of homesteads in the post-covid-19 era

    Get PDF
A large population in the country is facing encumbrance in basic food supply chain owing to lockdown and social distancing due to COVID-19. An attempt was made to develop a low-cost foldable solar dryer to aid self-reliance of homesteads. The novel solar dryer was based on light-weight foldable skeleton and UV stabilized polyethylene enclosure with a solar powered forced air circulation system. The developed solar dryer with a capacity to dry 50 coconuts in a batch (100 splits) could reduce the moisture level of freshly harvested coconut kernels from 48 per cent (d. b.) to a safe moisture level below 7 per cent (d. b.) on fifth day of drying. Though drying period of developed solar dryer was similar to the conventional sun drying method, the quality of copra produced was indisputably superior. The fungal infection in the copra was substantially lowered (9%) compared to open sun drying (35 %) by virtue of the hygienic and protected drying in the enclosed drying chamber. The developed solar dryer is useful for drying other food products also as it can provide complete protection of the materials against dust, insect and unseasonal precipitation

Development of an earth auger operating with brush cutter engine

Agricultural practices in large fields were declining habitually due to the scarcity of land holdings and growing demands of shelters. As scarcity of land is the major barrier for farmers, they are forced to do cultivation in the available area. Hence, farmers were intended to cultivate around the immediate surroundings of their house. It requires suitable machinery that caters for that suits the needs of small scale farmers. One among the tools needed is the earth auger. Hence, an earth auger operated with a brush cutter engine was developed to dig small pits required to plant small saplings and for fixing support poles for banana. Earth auger consist of an auger bit, a gear unit and a supporting handle. The performance evaluation of earth auger revealed that the maximum depth of pit dug by the earth auger was 45 cm with a diameter of 15 cm. Moreover, capacity of auger was measured as 8 pits per minute with an average fuel consumption of 1.69 liters per hour of operation

    Potential of AI in Agriculture

Articial intelligence is now being used in a variety of elds, including security, nance, agriculture, education, and even medicine. e primary source of income for more than 50% of rural Indian households and one of the country’s main economic drivers is agriculture. Articial intelligence (AI), also known as smart farming, is slowly but steadily aecting Indian agriculture and, by extension, our entire society. Our nation already uses precision agriculture, but IoT (Internet of ings) and cloud computing technologies still need to be implemented, enhanced, and developed for better crop production. Demand is steadily rising as the population expands. Agriculture’s reliance lessens on individual labourers and land as a result of modernization. Technology facilitates operational planning and expedites the decisionmaking process for farms. e Internet of ings (IoT) enables us to gather, store, create, and disseminate environmental data. e demand for cloud computing has signicantly increased, and it is expected to keep increasing in the future as cloud hosting and processing capabilities advance. IoT and AI (articial intelligence) are excellent choices to solve the problem of increased productivity. AI has a 98% accuracy rate for identifying pathogens and pests. Dierent fruit and vegetable ripening stages can be determined by sensors (Soar, 2019). Dierent cuttingedge technologies, such as block chains, machine learning, articial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics, may assist farmers in improving output and quality, which will advance sustainable agriculture

DRONES - A Revolution in Agriculture

India is one of the biggest agrarian economies in the world. A majority of people in rural India still rely on farming as the primary source of income. India is only second to the United States when it comes to the total arable area with 394.6 million acres while it tops the list of the countries with the largest gross irrigated crop area with 215.6 million acres. Also, agriculture contributed nearly 20% to the overall GDP of India in FY 2020-21, a jump of more than 2% from its contribution in FY 2019-20
