A Post COVID Look at African American Students in Higher Education: The Challenges to Academic Completion and Economic Stability
The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of students from a historically black college, on the correlation between race and economic inequality for African Americans due to a lack of access to a quality education experience. Throughout history, minorities have faced systemic disadvantages and discrimination, which have had lasting effects on their economic opportunities. A lack of access to quality resources, such as education, can further perpetuate these disparities, making it harder for individuals to break the cycle of poverty. Limited education can hinder career advancement, and wage growth for minorities, widening the income gap. This lack of education can perpetuate economic hardship across generations
The Effect of Cold and Hot Executive Functions, Personality, General Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence in Transformational Leadership
This study investigates the role of hot and cold executive functions (EF) in transformational leadership, considering the mediating role of personality, general cognitive ability, and trait emotional intelligence (EI). EF plays an essential role in responding and adapting to new situations. The sample (N=316) consisted of students and leaders. Neuropsychological tests assessing specific domains of EF and questionnaires assessing personality, general cognitive ability, and trait EI were administered. The results showed that cold EF affects leadership, emphasizing the mediating role of personality. Furthermore, leaders performed better in communication skills, attention span, and working memory than students
Proactively Addressing New Teacher Retention and Attrition During the Senior Year: A Comprehensive Course Redesign
After being named a 2022-2023 Georgia Governor’s Teaching Fellow, the author was asked to identify a course or a project that would be the focal point of his work during the year-long series of monthly symposia that constituted the program. The program enabled the author to conduct a comprehensive redesign of a relatively outdated course. The course, entitled EDEX 4334: Teachers as Leaders, was transformed into a relevant, real-world educational experience designed to address the issues of teacher attrition, retention, and burnout using activities designed to enhance the experience of undergraduate Special Education majors at Georgia College & State University. The result was a reimagined course that incorporated components addressing key issues facing new teachers such as navigating the hiring process, resume preparation, rehearsing the interview processes, handling Special Education IEPs and caseloads, managing paraprofessionals, supervisors, and colleagues, honing time management skills, and addressing self-care in order to prevent new teacher attrition and burnout
Faithful Representation, Productivity, and Profitability of SRA Accredited Block Farms in Negros Island
The block farm program of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has 59 enrollees from 2016 and 2017 in Negros Island. The block farms’ degree of compliance to faithful representation as qualitative characteristics of financial information were determined in this study. Faithful representation was measured through a compliance index (TCI) with a summation of three significant indicators of completeness, neutrality, and free from error. Results indicated a Total Compliance Index (TCI) of 0.26, interpreted as low compliance to faithful representation. The results revealed a significant relationship between production cost and productivity, revenue and cane yield, and revenue from sugar and productivity. Compliance with faithful representation and profit also showed a significant relationship, while compliance and productivity showed no significant relationship. Farms should adopt appropriate and generally acceptable accounting practices to enhance the quality of financial information. A practical and uniform bookkeeping system with proper training and support should be available. There is a need to develop practical courses on agricultural technology, farm management, farm accounting, and labor management
Enhancing Student Success in Higher Education: A Human-Centered Design Thinking Approach
Higher education institutions increasingly recognize the need to revolutionize approaches to student success. This study employs Human-Centered Design Thinking (HCDT), addressing the challenges faced by students and developing initiatives aimed at improving retention, progression, and graduation rates. Approximately 90 undergraduate students participated in the HCDT sessions, sharing insights about their academic progress. Through a collaborative process, students innovatively designed strategies to overcome these challenges. The HCDT process produced four key themes: proper and timely advisement; courses, schedules, and majors responsive to student demand; reciprocal communication clarity within and about courses; and resource knowledge availability and access. This study features the transformative potential of HCDT in higher education, placing students at the forefront of understanding challenges and designing strategies. By embracing this human-centered approach, institutions can significantly enhance retention, progression, and graduation rates, contributing to an inclusive and supportive educational environment
Neoliberalism in the University Faculty-Administrator Relationship
University Faculty and administrators often find themselves in a battle of us versus them. Thinking more specifically about faculty’s relationship with professional administrators, we use duoethnography to explore the experiences of a faculty member who once worked as an administrator and a professional administrator who is currently a doctoral student. As we explored our experiences of the faculty-administrator divide, we delved deeper into neoliberalism’s role in today’s universities. Inviting the reader to examine their understanding of neoliberalism in the university, we contemplate “What is a university?” From this question, we offer ideas on ways that faculty and administrators may unite to help define the role of today’s university in a neoliberal world
Admission Test Scores and Colleges’ Retention Rates
Most higher education institutions eliminated standardized test requirements for applicants following the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of college admission criteria on college student retention has been the subject of extensive research in higher education. This literature suggests that admission criteria play a significant role in influencing student retention rates. However, the impacts of test-optional admissions procedures have been relatively understudied. Using a dataset of admissions requirements, institutional profiles, measures of collegiate success, financial aid, and demographics of full-time, first-year students at public or not-for-profit private 4-year institutions for the 2021-2022 academic year, we find that, of the different criteria used in admission policies, required or recommended letters of recommendation and graduation rates combined have an impact on college retention rates. Required or recommended admission test scores positively increase retention rates, albeit not robustly
The Impact of Perceived Teacher Paternalistic Leadership on Voice Behavior Among College Students in Hebei Province, China
Student voice behavior is an important aspect of school culture. Raising awareness of student voice can support academic achievement and deepen school reforms, and this study explored the influence of college students’ perception of teacher-parent leadership on their voice behavior based on the Chinese cultural background. Based on social exchange theory, a convenience sampling method was applied to conduct a questionnaire survey on 709 college students from 5 universities in Hebei Province, China. After analyzing by SEM (Structural Equation Modeling), the study showed that: In teacher paternalistic leadership, benevolent leadership and moral leadership have a significant positive impact on voice behavior while authoritarian leadership has a meaningful negative impact. Therefore, teacher paternalistic leadership can provide psychological care and academic support for students, set a fair and moral example, and avoid making authoritarian decisions, providing a supportive voice environment for students
