Navigating Barriers to Success for Community College Science Students: A Review of Transfer Challenges

    Get PDF
This paper examines the challenges community college students encounter when transferring to four-year higher-education institutions, focusing on the gap between their transfer aspirations and actual success. Despite the availability of substantial financial aid in higher education, transfer students continue to face numerous challenges that impede their integration and success at new institutions. These obstacles arise from a combination of institutional factors and individual student characteristics. Utilizing Pascarella’s model, this study underscores the importance of support programs in raising institutional awareness of the diverse challenges transfer students face and the necessity for tailored strategies to facilitate their successful transition and retention

Furthermore, guided by expectancy violation theory, the study develops a framework for understanding how misunderstandings arise. It enriches existing literature by examining intercultural misunderstandings in the Asian higher education context and highlights future directions for exploring strategies to mitigate them

Exploring an Assessment Module in Distance Education at the University of Pretoria

    Get PDF
The study aimed to describe many aspects of a Distance Education (DE) assessment course at the University of Pretoria. The researcher wanted to examine how the course evolved from pre- to post-COVID-19. This included looking at the content and assessment of the module, as well as the pedagogy and technology used, using the TPACK framework. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative case study, with semi-structured interviews with the tutors and administrators of DE and Google Form surveys for the 30 students that took part. They commented on the DE management, the Blackboard LMS, the tutors' pedagogy and the course’s content and assessment. The management of DE was described as successful, and the students liked the content of the assessment module as well as the assignments and pedagogy of the tutors. The students and tutors suggested possible improvements in the content and assignments. The Blackboard LMS was described as easy to use, but some students experienced problems with connectivity and lack of data

A Hierarchical-Dealer-Centric Model of FX Swap Valuation

    Get PDF
This paper constructs a model of foreign exchange (FX) swap valuation based on dealers’ behavior and the hierarchy of the global dollar funding system. International investors use these currency derivatives to synthetically fill their US-dollar funding gaps. In this model, three attributes of market structure drive the valuation of FX swaps: market-making costs (measured by dealers’ bid-ask spreads), dollar funding liquidity risk (measured by CIP deviation and market imperfections), and FX swap market liquidity (measured by dealer competition). The goal is to understand how market design influences the cost of US dollar funding and its spillover effects. FX dealers are vital institutions in this ecosystem, as their balance sheets connect national monetary systems to the global dollar funding markets. For currencies with low FX turnover, central banks act as market makers, while private banks serve as dealers for currencies with the highest FX turnover. Studying the “dollar funding gap” through the lens of FX swap dealers is a crucial aspect often overlooked in international finance scholarship

Accountability and Governance in Kenya's Sustainable Development Goals Implementation: A Developing Country Perspective

    Get PDF
This study analyzes how accountability mechanisms and governance structures impact the achievement of SDG targets, providing a comprehensive review of Kenya’s progress, a developing country facing unique governance challenges. Specifically, the paper aims to define key concepts of accountability and governance within the Kenyan context, assess the frameworks in place for ensuring transparency and resource management, and evaluate their alignment with international best practices. A review of relevant literature was conducted, analysis of available reports on Kenya’s SDG progress, and case studies that highlight successes and failures in accountability and governance. While Kenya has made significant strides in some areas, gaps in governance and accountability continue to limit the full realization of the SDGs. Case studies reveal how governance reforms and partnerships with international organizations have yielded positive outcomes in certain SDG initiatives, yet systemic challenges persist. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for enhancing governance and accountability frameworks in Kenya. These recommendations have broad implications for other developing countries facing similar challenges

Dilemmas Faced by Businesses in a Mixed Development Strata Complex: Role of External Environmental Factors

    Get PDF
This case study is designed to help business students explore the complexities of external environmental factors and their impact on businesses. The case is built around the story of the Italian Forum, a mixed-use development in Leichhardt, an inner west suburb of Sydney in Australia. The Italian Forum was built on classic Italian architecture design principles which includes a mix of residential, commercial and cultural space. The New South Wales State Government granted the land for the Forum to promote and preserve Italian culture. After the initial euphoria and success, the businesses in the Forum started facing many complex and insurmountable challenges which has led to closure of many businesses. The efforts to revive the Forum continue till date. Students are encouraged to examine all aspects of this live case to understand the challenges and propose realistic solutions, drawing on theories and models learned in business courses. Limitations of the study include reliance on secondary research and qualitative data, which may restrict the depth of analysis available in this case study

Examining the Role of Cultural Adaptability in Enhancing Livelihood Resilience in Ethnic Rural Tourism Destinations

    Get PDF
This study explores the key factors influencing household livelihood resilience in ethnic rural tourist areas, specifically focusing on cultural adaptability. An analytical framework and measurement indicators for tourism livelihood resilience are proposed, with empirical analysis carried out in the two Bai minzu villages in Dali, Yunnan, China. Principal component analysis and multiple linear regression models were used to calculate household livelihood resilience and compare different livelihood strategies in two cases. Findings reveal more robust buffer capacity but weaker learning capacity among evaluated dimensions in two cases. Families involved in tourism and other sectors demonstrate superior livelihood resilience compared to those solely reliant on tourism. The findings reveal the significant impact of policy awareness, cultural confidence, and savings status on ethnic village household livelihood resilience. The study also identifies areas for future research, including the need for comparative and evolutionary research on multiple case types and a deeper exploration of the inherent mechanism between external shocks, tourism livelihood resilience, and livelihood strategies
