An Examination of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Initiatives in Large U.S. Public Accounting Firms to Recruit and Retain Women and Minorities in the Workplace
Get PDFPublic accounting firms are currently facing lower recruitment and retention rates, but the use of effective and authentic diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives can better the workplace environment. Through different DEIB initiatives, like mentorship programs, anti-bias training, employee resource groups, inclusive leadership, and pay equity, women and minorities can feel represented and comfortable in the workplace. From analyzing Big Four DEI Transparency Reports, a relationship is shown between effective DEIB initiatives and recruitment and retention within the firms. Furthermore, these DEIB initiatives are important aspects of a firm’s business strategy to be able to compete with one another
Facility Compliance and Natural Disaster Events: Evidence From the U.S. Clean Air Act
Get PDFWith the increasing severity and frequency of natural disasters, we investigate the impact of such events on company environmental performance in the United States. This study analyzes the effect of natural disasters on facility compliance with the Clean Air Act throughout the sample period from 2013 to 2022. Our findings show that facilities located in disaster areas are associated with higher violation rates. By examining individual types of disasters separately, we find that the results are most pronounced for floods, fires, and severe storms. We suggest that regulators collectively evaluate the environmental policies and practices for companies in areas prone to natural disasters

Get PDFThis research analyzes the effects of information technology (IT) and e-commerce (EC) investments and trends of the speeds of adjusting the observed toward the desired CEO pay in US firms, based on the adjustment model and its associated adjustment valuation (AV) approach, where the adjustment speeds are assumed dynamic and variable. The findings include: the speeds of adjusting the observed toward the unobserved compensation are fast; either IT or EC appearing alone or jointly impacts CEO compensation; the trends of adjustment speeds are nonlinear and nonstationary; and overall, the US CEOs tend to underpay during the period under study; among others
Unraveling the Dynamics of e-Government Digitization, Penetration and User Experience: A Case Study of Greek Municipalities
Get PDFThis study examines the user experience (UX) of Greek municipal websites, the first in-depth look at local e-Government services in Greece. Using Lighthouse for technical performance and an Adapted UX Audit, it explores factors beyond digital skills affecting citizen adoption of these platforms. Findings reveal widespread deficiencies, with no municipality scoring above 55%, highlighting significant challenges in usability, functionality, and user satisfaction. Critical issues in Technical Performance and Missing Features, both scoring below 50%, suggest that inherent design flaws hinder user acceptance. The study emphasizes the need for improvements in feedback mechanisms, multilingual support, and accessible help sections to better serve diverse populations. Addressing these gaps could enhance e-democracy by fostering more inclusive, user-friendly services. The results advocate for a strategic overhaul of municipal websites to increase engagement, improve e-Government effectiveness, and strengthen democratic participation. Limitations and recommendations for future research and policy-making are also provided

As digitalization transforms consumer behavior, QR codes have emerged as a versatile tool that streamlines financial transactions and reduces the environmental impact associated with paper-based systems (Ozturkcan & Kitapci, 2023). The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity for contactless interactions, positioning QR codes as essential in minimizing health risks while promoting eco-friendly practices (Alamoudi, 2022). Research results indicate that environmentally conscious consumers are more inclined to adopt QR code tipping, motivated to minimize resource consumption and support sustainable initiatives (Ozturkcan & Kitapci, 2023). This shift in behavior highlights the potential of QR codes to influence positive changes in consumer habits, encouraging adopting sustainable practices in everyday transactions. The widespread implementation of QR code tipping could significantly advance sustainability goals within the service industry, offering a practical solution that balances convenience with environmental responsibility. As awareness and acceptance of this technology increase, QR code tipping is set to become a cornerstone of a more sustainable and responsible future
Observing Coworkers’ Violations and Managers’ Discipline: The Effect of Violation and Punishment Severity on Coworkers
Get PDFThe purpose of this two-part study is to understand how disciplinary actions impact coworkers on other coworkers. Study one determines how a coworker’s perception of the severity of a violation is related to desire for retributive justice, attitude towards the violator, and how the severity of a violation impacts perception of appropriate discipline. Study two examined reactions when punishments are too mild, appropriate or severe. Results yielded a complex relationship where the violation’s severity interacted with the punishment’s severity. One finding was that under-punishing has a more pronounced impact on coworkers than over-punishing

Chatbots Selling Condos: Generative Artificial Intelligence in Real Estate
Get PDFGenerative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has become a hallmark of the 21st century's technological revolution, allowing users to answer questions instantly through an automated conversation. Although GenAI has controlled news narratives and captivated technology companies, minimal academic research exists regarding GenAI’s impact on the real estate industry. We interviewed 13 real estate professionals and completed a thematic analysis to understand how they use GenAI and their sentiment toward it. Professionals highlighted GenAI’s ability to quickly create marketing materials as a catalyst for using the technology. Thematic analysis revealed sentiments regarding efficiency, human intervention, ethics, generational adoption, relational business, and GenAI’s future development. This study forces real estate’s veiled nature into the light by considering the potential impacts of new technology on longstanding industry practices
Bridging Between High School and University: Assessment of Students’ Readiness to First-Year Engineering Programs
Get PDFThis descriptive case study uses self-assessment tools to explore 26 prospective students’ preparedness regarding their knowledge and competencies for entering the first year of engineering programs at a large, research-intensive Canadian university. We aim to provide insight for developing the Brigde2Engg (B2E) Program to empower and support students in their transition to university. Applying Conley’s college readiness model as a theoretical framework, findings from this study reveal that most students appear confident about their knowledge and skill preparedness for the first-year engineering programs, including their critical thinking abilities, problem-solving skills, and understanding of engineering professions. However, they are less confident in physics and the use of engineering tools. Therefore, we suggest that, when they choose to participate in the bridging program, these students should focus mainly on the subject they deem inadequate. Results also show that an introduction to engineering tools is essential to familiarize students with the programming and spreadsheet software they will use throughout their university programs
