Enhancing Generic Skills Development in Higher Education in the Era of Large Language Model Artificial Intelligence
Get PDFThe recently developed large language model artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as ChatGPT, are likely to become widely used over the next few years as core tools in many areas of business. Higher education graduates will need to be adequately prepared with the necessary generic skills to exploit this technology and a detailed understanding of the risks of using it and related ethical aspects to maximize their employability. Higher education institutions will need to develop training to support this and a conceptual multi-layer framework is proposed for generic skills development in higher education relevant to the emerging new era of large language model AI. This model encapsulates traditional generic skills training for employability, the extended skill sets needed for operating as independent knowledge-workers in increasingly fragmented working contexts, and the new sets of skills in areas such as prompt engineering, output verification and bias detection, which are needed specifically for operating as effective users of advanced AI systems in business
Attitude of Muslim Parents Towards Girls Higher Education in India
Get PDFThis review paper discusses Muslim parents’ attitudes about their daughters’ desire to pursue higher education in India. The method used in this study is the use of secondary data gathered from publicly accessible platforms, including reliable articles retrieved using online platforms, including Science Direct, Research Gate, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Initially, 186 papers were screened, and 105 met the requirements to move on to the assessment step. For the 72 papers that made it through the final round of examination, the paper maintains strict standards of accuracy, external validity, citation conventions, and review methods. The results of this review article shed light on the many factors that contribute to the educational crises that Muslim girls in India experience and the crucial role that parental attitudes play in determining their daughters’ academic success. The study emphasizes how socioeconomic factors influence Muslim females’ access to higher education. The report finishes with suggestions on dealing with these problems and encouraging females in India’s Muslim population to pursue higher education
Practical Curriculum Development in TVET: Integrating Taylorism and Connectivism for Operational Skill Enhancement
Get PDFWith the continuous development of the global economy and the adjustment of industrial structure, there is a growing demand for high-quality skilled talents with practical operational skills. This study aims to explore how to integrate Taylorism and Connectivism in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to enhance the effectiveness of operational skill cultivation. In the first phase of the research, we focused on the operational skill of escalator troubleshooting, gaining in-depth insights into the current situation in this field. Subsequently, we proposed and implemented an innovative curriculum development framework (BTCC), which fully utilizes the practical orientation of Taylorism and the interactive learning philosophy of Connectivism. This framework focuses on developing a course to enhance the operational skills of escalator troubleshooting. Finally, validated in an actual TVET environment, the research results, referred to as the Innovative Practical Course (ETSC), show that the new course significantly improves students’ proficiency in escalator troubleshooting skills and promotes active learning and collaboration in practice. This study provides practical and adaptable escalator troubleshooting course development experience for vocational colleges, offering a feasible approach to address the challenges in cultivating related operational skills
A Cost-Effective and Simplified Integration of Simulations and Hands-on Experiments in the Teaching of Electronic Instrumentation and Measurement Laboratory Course
Get PDFTo develop students into effective engineers upon graduation, it is important to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This is achieved through hands-on laboratory experiments, which form an important part of engineering education especially electronic circuits-related courses within the undergraduate level of education. Hence, it is important to develop well-outlined laboratory experiments that reflect the theoretical part of a course. Equally important is comparing simulation and measurement data, to better appreciate the theory. This work presents integrated simulation and hands-on experiments in teaching electronic instrumentation and measurement laboratory course, using low-cost off-the-shelf components. A no-cost circuit simulator software (LTspice) and low-cost breadboard with readily available off-the-shelf circuit components can be used both at home (self-paced) and in the laboratory to motivate students and align results for an improved learning approach. The advantage of this integrated laboratory is that no specialized or expensive teaching kit is required, which improves accessibility and course delivery. Residential Move During COVID-19 Pandemic and Psychological Health Among College Students: The Role of Perceived Social Support
Get PDFResearch has widely documented the high stress levels posed to college students by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the role of social support in mitigating the mental health impacts of stressors like residential instability among college students is less well-researched. Using data from a multi-campus online survey of college students’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 2,486), this study examines the role of social support in the association between residential move during COVID-19 pandemic and college students’ reports of depressive symptoms and anxiety. We tested whether perceived social support was more significantly related to depressive symptoms among students who moved in response to COVID-19. The results show significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms and higher prevalence rates of severe anxiety among college students with COVID-19-related move relative to those who did not move during the pandemic. Irrespective of their residential status, college students who received less support than needed during the pandemic had significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms and higher odds of severe anxiety. The findings add to the existing studies showing how the COVID-19 pandemic compounds the problems of depression and anxiety among college students, particularly those experiencing residential instability and with limited social support
A Note on the Impact of the Canada-India Diplomatic Standoff on the Performance of Canadian Mutual Funds Investments in India
Get PDFOn June 18, 2023, Mr. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen of Indian origin, was killed in Canada. On September 18, 2023, the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. Justin Trudeau, accused the Indian Government of involvement in killing Mr. Nijjar in the Canadian Parliament. This accusation preceded and succeeded by other events, led to a significant diplomatic standoff that is still ongoing. We examine the impact of this event chain on the performance of daily returns of mutual funds based in Canada that are predominantly invested in Indian securities. Our results, controlled for general stock market returns, fund size, expense ratio, and interest rates, indicate that the events negatively impacted fund performance. Our study adds to the existing literature on the benefits of international diversification of mutual funds in disconnected markets. The findings of this paper suggest that political discord between two distinct and unrelated economies may impact profits and negate the advantages of international diversification. Our study is significant to professionals, particularly mutual fund managers, as it demonstrates the role of two countries’ political ties in affecting mutual fund returns
What Determines Global Flows of Entrepreneurial Finance?
Get PDFEconomists examine foreign direct investment, which mostly constitutes flows to established firms (sometimes characterized as “multinational corporations”) that might or might not engage in truly innovative activity in the FDI target country. Conversely, finance scholars have studied the pipeline of entrepreneurial finance from limited partnerships (LPs) to venture capitalists (VCs) or private equity general partners (GPs) to portfolio firms. Few studies examine relationships between general and limited partners, and those that do often examine only the United States, or a limited number of countries in a given region. This paper uses a novel dataset (LP Source) to examine secular trends in cross-national flows from the LP to the GP (in the form of various investment funds) to the portfolio firm. We find evidence for “home bias” and demonstrate that cross-border flows are affected by GDP per capita, export orientation, and country-level measures of the entrepreneurial environment
Measuring Disclosure Content Within the MD&A: The Case of North Carolina Counties
Get PDFAudit implementation of Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) 34 guidelines has yielded increased levels of disclosure content within local government comprehensive annual financial reports (CAFRs). Of particular interest is the Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A) content that provides a prelude to primary statements establishing unit overall financial position. In this study, the level of disclosure content is measured using net position, fund balance, and organizational factors among all 100 North Carolina County governments for fiscal year 2019. The empirical analysis suggests that disclosure content within area of foci changes depending on increased audit fees, state designated tier level, specific departmental spending, and lengthier MD&As. Additional information illuminates a very limited auditor pool and some recalcitrance concerning service provision. Overall, the findings point to audit disclosure practices including the MD&A as being predicated on unit overall needs versus illumination
Spirituality and the Health of U. S. College Students: A Partial Replication and Extension
Get PDFSpirituality has been linked with numerous positive effects, and the university experience is generally viewed as an important time for students to develop their spiritual identities. The purpose of this study was to partially replicate and extend the findings of Nelms et al. (2007) on the relationship between spirituality and the health of university students. In a survey study of 968 first-year undergraduate students in the western United States, we found that spirituality was associated with higher levels of physical health, emotional health, and exercise, and these relationships were generally different for white individuals and men than for minorities and women
