Does Habits of Mind-Based Instruction Catalyze Literacy Development? The Case of Jordanian EFL Learners
Get PDFThis study examines the potential effect of habits of mind-based instruction on Jordanian EFL tenth-grade students’ literacy development. A quasi-experimental design was used, as two intact sections (n=35) were drawn from a pool of five tenth-grade sections from Hay Al -Arqoub Basic Mixed School, a public school in the North-West Badia Department of Education, Mafraq (Jordan). The two sections were randomly distributed into a control group (n=18) and an experimental group (n=17). A pre-/post- test was used to assess the participants’ performance before and after the implementation of an eight-week habits of mind-based instructional program. Descriptive statistics of both central tendency and dispersion (e.g., means, Standard deviations, variance) were used to analyze the date. The findings revealed that the participants of the experimental group outperformed those in the control group in both reading and writing. The findings stress the importance of a conducive, non-threatening learning environment in which learners feel ‘safe’ to ask questions, engage in literacy-related activities, and interact with peers to achieve common goals. With practice, habits of mind become behaviors for students and teachers to build on, value, and use to handle situations in and outside the classroom
Promoting Theory and Practice: A Year-Long Residency Program to Better Prepare Future Educators
Get PDFA challenge frequently voiced in the field of teacher preparation is the divide between theory and practice. Specifically, university coursework is often viewed as “the theory,” with classroom teaching experiences in PreK-12 settings being considered “the practice.” One Teacher Preparation Program re-designed their program to address this divide and better prepare pre-service teachers (PSTs) for their futures as educators. To do this, the re-designed program included more authentic classroom experiences through the implementation of a year-long residency model and the creation of a residency-specific course. This article details how an English methods course and residency course were designed to support PSTs as they made connections to their residency experiences. In this way, PSTs majoring in secondary English Language Arts (ELA) education were immersed within middle and secondary ELA classrooms as residents, while simultaneously engaging in rigorous university coursework, which sought to promote educational theory and practice. Identification of Prospective Physics Teacher’s Problem Solving Skills: A Study on Simple Electrical Circuits Topic
Get PDFProblem-solving is one of the essential and crucial skills for physical learning. This study describes the problem-solving skills of college students taking physics education programs and their incorrect answers on simple electrical circuits topic. We used four essay questions representing the series, parallel, combined series-parallel, and double-loop electrical circuits concepts to measure their problem-solving skills. Meanwhile, for describing their problem-solving skills, we used five categories of problem-solving processes, consisting of useful description (UD), physics approach (PA), specific application of physics (SAP), mathematical procedures (MP), and logical progression (LP). Further, to identify their mistakes, we examined the general mistakes in each problem-solving process. Our analysis results suggested that the college students taking the physics education program have relatively high problem-solving skills in the UD and PA categories. Still, they have low skills in SAP and MP categories, with poor ability in the LP category. Their mistakes were mostly observed in drawing complete electrical circuits and the circuits with missing and changing components (UD category), the correlation between each physic concept, law, and principle with the simple electrical circuits topic (PA category), confusion and inconsistency to correctly determine the + or – symbols for every source of voltage and difficulty in using the Kirchoff’s second law following the loop direction. Besides, the participants also frequently used incorrect V, and I value on the problem being reviewed (SAP category), did not re-evaluate the order and completeness of their answer, as well as the logical reasoning for the obtained V and I from their problem-solving process based on the scientific and physic concepts and characteristics (LP category)

Get PDFThis bibliometric study involves 241 articles about ChatGPT within education, revealing a robust study field with an extraordinary annual growth rate of 23,900% and a high level of international collaboration (18.67%). The results also show that leading countries contribute distinct insights. Five unique study clusters emerged from co-occurrence analysis, concentrating on the development, role, and practical impact of ChatGPT. The multidisciplinary scope of the research highlights ChatGPT’s broad applicability from transformations to ethical dilemmas. Sentiment analysis also showed that teaching is essential, especially in higher education and medicine. The limitations of this study are concentrated on specific databases. Future research suggests adding more databases, the ethical, and pedagogical implications

And while it has been recommended that U.S. colleges and universities implement a mandatory financial literacy course (President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, 2009; U.S. Financial Literacy and Education Commission, 2019), no such requirement has been imposed. Currently, only one quarter of college students report access to financial literacy education (Montalto et al, 2019). Guided by best practices and insights, this paper examines the opportunity for an upper-division core business course to support a focused, financial literacy learning opportunity for upper classmates by employing a simulated retirement plan enrollment. This work contributes to the body of work on financial literacy education and represents an efficient approach to providing relevant education to meet the growing financial literacy needs of college students

An Empirical Analysis on Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Exam Passage Rates in Texas
Get PDFStudying noncurricular features alongside existing curriculum elements provides valuable information for improving professional programs that prepare future business leaders (Barilla, 2008). We use a large sample of aggregated CPA exam passage rate data from 12 Texas public universities over a ten-year period to analyze CPA exam passage rates. We then investigate the interactions across sample years, number of examinees, degree types, and exam sections. Our findings provide curriculum developers and schedulers with considerable insights into the delegation of teaching responsibilities owed to examinees and employers who increasingly expect the rewards of prompt CPA certification
The Effect of Financial Development and International Trade on Deregulation
Get PDFThis paper provides robust evidence of financial development and international trade liberalization on deregulation in some developing economies. Specifically, it investigates the effect of financial development and international trade liberalization on deregulation in 45 African countries in a panel set between January 1, 1980, to December 31, 2017. It employed the system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) panel data estimation to address potential endogeneity concerns. Demir and Dahi (2011) showed that system GMM can effectively deal with any endogeneity issue originating from unobserved country-specific effects, and bias. The study found a robust positive effect of financial development and international trade liberalization on deregulation. The key finding was that technological impact is observed when private credit is regressed on market capitalization on Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It found that both GDP and gross per capita negatively impact financial development, conceivably causing the selected African countries’ markets to be insulated
Inflationary Pressures Surrounding COVID – Are Price Increases Consistent With Changes in Costs
Get PDFEvidence suggests that companies are more eager to raise prices than to cut them (Karaian et al., 2023). Profit margins remain high even as inflation drops. This is accomplished by raising or holding prices steady as inflation shrinks. We examine the changes in selling prices and underlying costs between pre and post COVID periods. We expect that the shift in the relation between selling price and underlying costs prior to COVID would be less than the shift post-COVID. We investigate grocery food items because food inflation has been a main driver of inflation in the United States and other countries (Cavallo, 2022). Focusing on this specific cost behavior between the pre- and post-COVID periods allows us to measure the relationship between raising selling prices and related underlying increases in cost of goods sold and selling, as well as general and administrative expenses. The inference from our analyses suggests that food companies may have taken advantage of COVID-driven inflation to justify and increase their profit margins
