Institutionalist Thought: Ceremonial-Instrumental Dichotomy of the Veblen-Ayres Tradition
Get PDFVeblen and Ayres’ ceremonial-instrumental dichotomy is considered the analytical core of Old Institutional Theory (OIT). This view offers a distinct perspective for analyzing economic issues. The object of economics is studied at the level of cultural generalization, not individual generalization (as neoclassicists do). Human behavior is understood as a process of cumulative adaptation to contextual circumstances. Thus, understanding the meaning of the dichotomy – of doing things and making social distinctions, and of its application to illuminate modern economic problems – deserves attention. This systematic literature review describes the main theoretical, analytical, methodological, and empirical contributions to the ceremonial-instrumental dichotomy of the Veblen-Ayres tradition. To this end, articles on the topic published in the last 46 years were reviewed, which resulted in the analysis of 45 articles, which can be classified as a) conceptual b) methodological; c) empirical, and d) literature reviews. This body of analysis provided insights that lead to inferring the possibility of research in different fields of social sciences

This may be especially true with AIEMs designed with a high degree of humanlike features, which contribute to processes of anthropomorphization. This can encourage a parasocial relationship by the user, which fosters trust and increased usage of the device. Since AIEMs may nudge user behavior, entrepreneurs must consider the psychological aspects of relationship building when creating these devices
Analysis of the Relationship Between Extreme Weather Disasters and Claim Ratio Volatility Under Global Climate Change
Get PDFFrequent extreme weather events cause significant loss of life and property, highlighting the link between “extreme weather risk – catastrophic loss – high claim ratio – insurer solvency.” However, little research explores the mechanisms among these factors. This paper analyses the relationship between extreme weather and property insurance claim ratios, using data from 30 Chinese provinces (2012-2021). It constructs indices for high temperature, low temperature, and heavy precipitation, showing a strong correlation between extreme weather and claim ratios. Over 3- and 5-year periods, these indices significantly increase claim ratios, leading to complete or partial mediation effects on the solvency of property insurance companies

Most students surveyed agreed that the project helped them gain working knowledge on GPT, felt more confident in using GPT, and were open to the idea of using GPT in varied settings. However, many students claimed that they would not fully rely on GPT to do their work. A similar approach can be easily adopted to modify traditional essay assessments in other courses or disciplines to familiarize students with generative artificial intelligence's capabilities

Courageous, Fearful, Bureaucratic, and Quantum Organizational Types, and Personal Ethics
Get PDFIntegrating the perspective of the values in action classification theory (Peterson & Seligman, 2004), which asserts that personal attributes, such as fearlessness, authenticity, enthusiasm, and perseverance, create courage, and the deontological theory of ethics (Kant, 1996), which posits that what is wrong for one person to do is wrong for anyone and that morality is for everybody, this research examined four organizational types—courageous, fearful, bureaucratic, and quantum—to determine their effects on ethical behavior. The type of organization an employee works in can influence ethical behavior regarding supporting fairness and dignity, advocating for personal beliefs, challenging discrimination, defending colleagues’ rights, empowering underrepresented voices, and championing meritocracy and inclusivity (Kilmann et al., 2002). A statistically significant difference between fearful and quantum organizations was identified. This research affirms that individuals who worked in fearful organizations rated lower on personal ethics than those in quantum organizations, who rated higher on personal ethics. Furthermore, ethnicity emerged as the only statistically significant socio-demographic variable regarding the relationship between organizational type and personal ethics
College Student Self-Care: The Missing Ingredient for Success?
Get PDFCollege students are experiencing the highest rate of mental health challenges ever in history. This brief report on self-care consisted of nine participants, who were currently attending a public university. Three focus groups were held. Three themes emerged from the data: a.) defining and practicing self-care b.) self-care education and c.) self-care during the COVID pandemic. Since these students never received any formalized education about self-care and because of the college counseling center’ s inability to serve a growing number of students with mental health challenges, the researcher recommends that education institutions devote more time to educating students about self-care

This study adopts a qualitative method by interviewing university academicians from Gaza addressing the impact of the war crisis on their careers. These interviews scope the barriers and sketch the scale and nature of challenges for the higher educational sector during the war aiming to record the most important decisions and interventions to maintain the continuity of the education process forward

Acceptance of Artificial Intelligence Technology and Optimism Regarding Its Impact on the Job Market Among High School Students
Get PDFSince the introduction of ChatGPT, generative AI has presented notable challenges to the future job market, sparking widespread discussions about how automation and AI technologies might impact employment. However, individuals perceive these challenges differently based on their characteristics, with some viewing AI advancements as opportunities for growth and innovation. This study aimed to explore high school students' perceptions of AI's influence on the future job market. We hypothesized that proactive personality traits, technical and occupational self-efficacy would positively shape students' preparedness, optimism, and concerns about their future careers. To test these hypotheses, we gathered data from 141 high school students. Our findings revealed that proactive personality and technical self-efficacy positively correlated with a heightened sense of preparedness and optimism about AI’s impact on jobs. These insights offer practical implications for educators and policymakers and suggest areas for future research to better understand how students can be prepared for an AI-driven workforce
