The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation. I. WISE/Spitzer Photometry
We present Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) W1 photometry of the Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves sample. The baseline of near-IR fluxes is established for use by stellar mass models, a key component to the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation and other kinematic galaxies scaling relations. We focus this paper on determination of the characteristics of the W1 fluxes compared to IRAC 3.6 μm fluxes, internal accuracy limitations from photometric techniques, external accuracy by comparison to other work in the literature and the range of W1 to IRAC 3.6 μm colors. We outline the behavior of SDSS g, W1 and IRAC 3.6 colors with respect to underlying spectral energy distribution features. We also note a previously unknown correlation between WISE colors and the central surface brightness, probably related to the low metallicity of low-surface-brightness dwarfs
Are Otolaryngologists Seeing More Cough? Longitudinal Trends and Patterns
Objective: Otolaryngologists play an increasing role in managing cough, but little data exists examining the demographics of this patient population and the referral patterns that influence their access to care. This study sought to elucidate these factors using a longitudinal, nationwide database to minimize sampling bias and identify trends representative of the national population. Study Design: Nationally representative survey. Setting: National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). Methods: Visits with a diagnosis and chief complaint of cough between 2005 and 2019 in NAMCS were examined. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to compare patient demographics between visits to surgical specialists, medical specialists, and primary care physicians. Results: Otolaryngologists made up more than 84% of surgical specialist visits. There was a 0.52% [0.20%-0.84%] increase per year in the proportion of visits attributed to surgical specialists. Based on a sensitivity analysis of the multivariable model, Hispanic patients (adjusted odds ratio, aOR: 0.88 [0.78-0.99] vs White) and patients living outside of metropolitan areas (aOR: 0.77 [0.61-0.99] vs living within) were less likely to see surgical specialists than primary care doctors for their cough. Patients who were referred (aOR: 1.47 [1.28-1.72] vs not referred) and with chronic cough (aOR: 1.47 [1.23-1.75] vs acute/subacute) were more likely to see a surgical specialist. Conclusion: Otolaryngologists are increasingly called upon to evaluate and consider treatment for cough. Identifying patient groups with limited access underscores the need for enhanced education about otolaryngologists\u27 roles and integrated care approaches to improve access to specialized cough treatment. Study of Am Electrodeposition from AmCl₃-LiCl-KCI Molten Salt
In this work, the electrodeposition reaction of Am in AmCl₃LiCl-KCl molten salt was studied using voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Electrodeposition of Am was shown to proceed via a two − step reaction scheme, involving the one-electron transfer reduction of Am³⁺ to Am²⁺, followed by the two-electron transfer reduction of intermediate Am²⁺ to Am⁰. A low Coulombic efficiency of Am deposition was measured despite the Am deposition occurring within the thermodynamic stability window of the supporting LiCl-KCl electrolyte. We hypothesize that the low efficiency is due to out-diffusion of the intermediate Am²⁺ species away from the electrode surface. Experimental observations provide evidence of a kinetically − limited electrodeposition reaction, which allows for the loss of intermediate Am²⁺ via diffusion leading to Am deposition inefficiency
Review of the Safety and Efficacy of Trauma-Focused Treatment Among Patients With Psychosis
Among people who experience psychosis, many have comorbid post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is frequently undiagnosed and untreated. Symptoms have long-term implications, such as hallucinations, posttraumatic intrusions, and an increased risk of physical health conditions, like heart disease and respiratory issues. Many clinicians believe that diagnosing and treating PTSD in this population will be dangerous, so these patients are often excluded from trauma-focused treatment based on their psychosis symptoms. This paper will review current data regarding the rates of undiagnosed PTSD among this population as well as the safety and efficacy of treatment options. PubMed was used to identify peer-reviewed, academic journal articles pertaining to, “PTSD,” “psychosis,” “trauma-focused treatment,” “content of first episode psychosis,” and “schizophrenia.” Eleven empirical studies were identified and included in this review. The results showed rates of PTSD among psychosis patients are much higher than currently identified, with one study finding that 16% of participants suffered from comorbid PTSD with only 0.5% of the population having been diagnosed previously. Data also showed that treatment for PTSD was safe and decreased both PTSD and psychosis symptoms in this population. These results strongly indicate that additional studies should be conducted in order to determine which trauma-focused treatments are the most safe and effective for this population. Clinicians working with psychosis patients should be informed of the results of these studies in order to encourage them to diagnose and treat the PTSD of their patients along with their psychosis
