    Is the Grass Always Greener on the Other Side? An Analysis of Migration and Retention of Ohio’s Working Age Population

    Analyzing the relationship between average salary of individuals and retention rates of individuals in Ohio, this paper seeks to understand the talent migration trends among those with varying levels of education. A stark contrast is observed between the mobility of people with higher wages than those with lower wages, with a significantly higher percentage of the former leaving the state. The hypothesis suggests that earning higher wages outside of Ohio may reduce the likelihood of Ohio residents staying within the state. The research utilizes a probit regression model to estimate retention probabilities, controlling for age, whether the individual is employed, whether or not the individual was originally from the state, and whether the individual obtained a bachelor’s degree. Preliminary data from the CPS, serves as the foundation for analysis. Anticipated findings suggest that higher salaries of individuals correlate with lower retention rates. The study holds substantial implications for policymakers, educators, and employers, allowing for benchmarking against states with higher rates of retention and providing insight for learning about the policies and practices of these other states, which can help Ohio policymakers implement an effective plan for increasing their own retention rate

    Lived Experiences: Growing Up with a Seriously Mentally Ill Parent

    Introduction: Individuals with serious mental illness often have persistent and disruptive symptoms. These can profoundly affect their children\u27s lives, exposing them to adverse social and psychological conditions. Such conditions can result in traumatic lived experiences during childhood, which can carry over into adulthood, influencing their self-perceptions and shaping their attitudes toward themselves and society. To gain insights into this phenomenon, this study explored the lived experiences of adults who grew up with a parent with serious mental illness and their perceptions of their lives in adulthood. Design: This study used an interpretive phenomenological design. Methods: Participants were invited to voluntarily participate in the study through a call posted on social media. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 adults (age range, 20–55 years) who grew up with a parent with serious mental illness. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, and inductive thematic analysis was used to identify main and overarching themes. Results: The overarching theme of transition from childhood survival to adulthood survival emerged and included four main themes: (1) a traumatic childhood, (2) perceived control, (3) resilience and general self-efficacy, and (4) adult quality of life. A traumatic childhood consisted of experiences of neglect and abuse, while participants used perceived control to achieve personal growth, self-care, and care of others. Resilience and general self-efficacy emerged during the transition to adulthood and helped participants further their social status and strengthen family bonds. Lastly, adult quality of life was described as being disturbed by feelings of loneliness and being burdensome, stemming from an inherent tendency to rely solely on themselves, leading to trust issues and mental health complications. Therefore, these adults found it difficult to reach out and get help or treatment for their concerns, as they initially did not want to appear dysfunctional or in need. Conclusion:This study has illuminated the lived experiences of a specific, vulnerable population that has not been intentionally explored until now. To delve into these experiences, we employed a distinctive qualitative approach, merging the interpretive phenomenological perspective with an inductive thematic analysis. This allowed for rich insight with a relatively large group of participants and enabled an in-depth exploration within this methodological framework. Consequently, this study constitutes a notable contribution to the extant body of knowledge, exploring the intricacies of personal growth and its impact on participants\u27 quality of life. It uncovers the essence of resilience and general self-efficacy, revealing how these elements intertwine with the negative results observed. However, the study findings emphasize the need for healthcare professionals, including nurses and other caregivers, to be mindful of the long-lasting effects of the adverse experiences of children of patients with serious mental illness. Prioritizing active clinical assessment and implementing tailored interventions to address such children\u27s specific needs and difficulties across different developmental stages is imperative. Such comprehensive and targeted approaches are crucial in providing appropriate support and promoting the well-being of these individuals. Clinical Relevance: Enhanced clinical attention in holistic psychiatric care is crucial for individuals and their relatives, especially children.     Early Use of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics in Bipolar Disorder Type I: An Expert Consensus

    Introduction: Long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) are not routinely offered to patients living with bipolar disorder type I (BP-I), despite widespread evidence that supports their benefits over oral antipsychotics, particularly in early disease. Methods: A round-table meeting of psychiatrists convened to discuss barriers and opportunities and provide consensus recommendations around the early use of LAIs for BP-I. Results: LAIs are rarely prescribed to treat BP-I unless a patient has severe symptoms, sub-optimal adherence to oral antipsychotics, or has experienced multiple relapses. Beyond country-specific accessibility issues (e.g., healthcare infrastructure and availability/approval status), primary barriers to the effective use of LAIs were identified as attitudinal and knowledge/experience-based. Direct discussions between healthcare providers and patients about treatment preferences may not occur due to a preconceived notion that patients prefer oral antipsychotics. Moreover, as LAIs have historically been limited to the treatment of schizophrenia and the most severe cases of BP-I, healthcare providers might be unaware of the benefits LAIs provide in the overall management of BP-I. Improved treatment adherence associated with LAIs compared to oral antipsychotics may support improved outcomes for patients (e.g., reduced relapse and hospitalization). Involvement of all stakeholders (healthcare providers, patients, and their supporters) participating in the patient journey is critical in early and shared decision-making processes. Clinical and database studies could potentially bridge knowledge gaps to facilitate acceptance of LAIs. Conclusion: This review discusses the benefits of LAIs in the management of BP-I and identifies barriers to use, while providing expert consensus recommendations for potential solutions to support informed treatment decision-making

    Elevating Black Fathers\u27 Experiences in the National Fatherhood Initiative: Strengths and Areas for Improvement of 24/7 Dad® Curriculum and Case Management Services

    The Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood grant program is one of the most robust mechanisms supporting fatherhood programming in the United States, with the gold standard of care including fatherhood curriculum (e.g., 24/7 Dad®) and case management services. Despite the fact that fatherhood in the United States is not a monolith and Black fathers make up over 40% of those served through Responsible Fatherhood (RF) program, little research explicitly centers the lived experiences of low-income Black fathers. The current study used focus groups with fathers (n = 23) and staff (n = 8) enrolled in a RF grantee program. Thematic analysis was used to determine programmatic mechanisms supporting these fathers\u27 success and areas for improvement. Our findings highlight that the creation of a “safe space” by facilitators and the power of the group dynamic were essential elements for fathers\u27 success overall. We also identified numerous programmatic mechanisms supporting Black fathers\u27 success specific to fathering, healthy relationships, and economic stability. Finally, we highlighted important limitations that may impede the success of low-income, Black fathers related to the 24/7 Dad® curriculum, engagement efforts, and economic stability, and discuss related practice, policy, and research recommendations

    Materials Data Science Using CRADLE: A Distributed, Data-Centric Approach

    There is a paradigm shift towards data-centric AI, where model efficacy relies on quality, unified data. The common research analytics and data lifecycle environment (CRADLE™) is an infrastructure and framework that supports a data-centric paradigm and materials data science at scale through heterogeneous data management, elastic scaling, and accessible interfaces. We demonstrate CRADLE’s capabilities through five materials science studies: phase identification in X-ray diffraction, defect segmentation in X-ray computed tomography, polymer crystallization analysis in atomic force microscopy, feature extraction from additive manufacturing, and geospatial data fusion. CRADLE catalyzes scalable, reproducible insights to transform how data is captured, stored, and analyzed. Graphical abstract: (Figure presented.

    Repeated Stimulation of feeding Mechanoafferents in Aplysia Generates Responses Consistent with the Release of Food

    How does repeated stimulation of mechanoafferents affect feeding motor neurons? Monosynaptic connections from a mechanoafferent population in the Aplysia buccal ganglia to five motor followers with different functions were examined during repeated stimulus trains. The mechanoafferents produced both fast and slow synaptic outputs, which could be excitatory or inhibitory. In contrast, other Aplysia mechanoafferents produce only fast excitation on their followers. In addition, patterns of synaptic connections were different to the different motor followers. Some followers received both fast excitation and fast inhibition, whereas others received exclusively fast excitation. All followers showed strong decreases in fast postsynaptic potential (PSP) amplitude within a stimulus train. Fast and slow synaptic connections were of net opposite signs in some followers but not in others. For one follower, synaptic contacts were not uniform from all subareas of the mechanoafferent cluster. Differences in properties of the buccal ganglia mechanoafferents and other Aplysia mechanoafferents may arise because the buccal ganglia neurons innervate the interior of the feeding apparatus, rather than an external surface, and connect to motor neurons for muscles with different motor functions. Fast connection patterns suggest that these synapses may be activated when food slips, biasing the musculature to release food. The largest slow inhibitory synaptic PSPs may contribute to a delay in the onset of the next behavior. Additional functions are also possible

    Fabrication and Validation of Sub-Cellular Carbon Fiber Electrodes

    Multielectrode arrays for interfacing with neurons are of great interest for a wide range of medical applications. However, current electrodes cause damage over time. Ultra small carbon fibers help to address issues but controlling the electrode site geometry is difficult. Here we propose a methodology to create small, pointed fiber electrodes (SPFe). We compare the SPFe to previously made blowtorched fibers in characterization. The SPFe result in small site sizes (105.4 ± 20.8μm2) with consistently sharp points (20.8 ± 7.64°). Additionally, these electrodes were able to record and/or stimulate neurons multiple animal models including rat cortex, mouse retina, Aplysia ganglia and octopus axial cord. In rat cortex, these electrodes recorded significantly higher peak amplitudes than the traditional blowtorched fibers. These SPFe may be applicable to a wide range of applications requiring a highly specific interface with individual neurons

    Traces of you reach me through my senses. But without wondering in your presence, I cannot see you. For beings of sense and meaning such as ourselves, being stirred by another’s presence opens wondering. The implications of such claims are striking for what perception involves, for being in touch with another, and for good relationships. The paper proceeds as a series of “strobes,” from an ancient Greek word for whirling. Turning quickly about, words enact being stirred into won-dering, interspersed with visual glimpses, a photographic series. Building on recent work by the author, the paper draws on Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology; Daniel R. Schein feld, Karen M. Haigh, and Sandra J.P. Scheinfeld’s early childhood edu-cational theory, and a phrase by Martha C. Nussbaum describing the intentionalityof wondering. This is deepened by attention to what the phenomenological traditioncalls “passive synthesis,” and what the author, following F.W.J. Schelling, has called“positive anxiety,” the soul’s excitement around the possibility of sense and meaning

    Pathological Mechanisms and Novel Testing Methods in Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

    Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an uncommon, but potentially disabling or even deadly, thrombotic microangiopathy with a well-studied mechanism of ADAMTS13 deficiency or dysfunction. While established treatments are largely effective, the standard ADAMTS13 testing required to definitively diagnose TTP may cause delays in diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the need for rapid and effective diagnostic methods. Additionally, the heterogeneous presentation and varied inciting events of TTP suggest more variation in its mechanism than previously thought, implying three potential pathways rather than the accepted two. The recent discovery of ADAMTS13 conformation as a potential contributor to TTP in addition to the proposal of using the absolute immature platelet count (A-IPC) as a biomarker, present novel areas for monitoring and treatment. A-IPC in particular may serve as a more rapid and accurate diagnostic test to distinguish TTP from non-TTP TMAs and to monitor treatment response and relapse. These considerations highlight the need to further study TTP in order to improve best practices and patient care

    Vibrational Spectrum of Granular Packings with Random Matrices

    Abstract: The vibrational spectrum of granular packings can be used as a signature of the jamming transition, with the density of states at zero frequency becoming nonzero at the transition. It has been proposed previously that the vibrational spectrum of granular packings can be approximately obtained from random matrix theory. Here, we show that the autocorrelation function of the density of states shows good agreement between dynamical numerical simulations of frictionless bead packs near the jamming point and the analytic predictions of the Laguerre orthogonal ensemble of random matrices; there is clear disagreement with the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, establishing that the Laguerre ensemble correctly reproduces the universal statistical properties of jammed granular matter and excluding the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. We also present a random lattice model which is a physically motivated variant of the random matrix ensemble. Numerical calculations reveal that this model reproduces the known features of the vibrational density of states of frictionless granular matter, while also retaining the correlation structure seen in the Laguerre random matrix theory.
