    Neurobiological Based Navigation Map Created During the SLAM Process of a Mobile Robot

    In theory, an autonomous mobile robot’s ability to navigate with greater intelligence and flexibility in a dynamic environment would be possible if its navigation system was modeled after that of biological creatures. More specifically, to create an agent that mimics neurobiological navigation cells and neural network connections as found in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex of rodent brains. These navigation cells are the: place cells, head direction cells, boundary cells, and grid cells, as well as memory. To navigate from one waypoint to another, our mobile robot, known as ratbot, uses inspiration from place cells and head direction cells for path integration. This is accomplished through use of vectors and vector mathematics. Additionally, the ratbot uses a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to emulate grid cell functionality for environment mapping and spatial cognition

    Real Estate Home Pricing: The Role of Hedonic model variables and Community Amenities

    Although the residential real estate market has stabilized in the five -- seven years following the financial crisis of 2008 the market remains generally depressed with price growth stagnant. In turn forecasting an initial asking price using traditional hedonic pricing models is problematic: buyers have lost confidence in the market’s response. Additionally, community amenities may be viewed by buyers as a potential tax liability given reduced availability of federal and state funding for local services. As originally suggested variables such as the square footage of a property can be used to explain changes in the selling prices of homes in these markets. The findings for question two were not anticipated. It would appear that high levels of community services are attractive to home buyers in this county. If we consider the three towns, there may be variables that create attractiveness other than services and square footage. These differences may be masking another variable that has a higher explanatory value in relation to the variance observed in selling prices of homes in these communities

    Energy efficient hidden node detection for improving Quality of Service in wireless multimedia sensor networks

    In many wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) the nodes are static. However, node connection is subjected to change due to disruptions in wireless communication, power changes in transmission, or loss of synchronization between neighboring nodes. A sensor should constantly be aware of its immediate neighbors, through a process called continuous neighbor discovery. In this paper we introduce an energy efficient hidden node detection (EEHND) algorithm for continuous neighbor discovery process in the wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs). We focus on the continuous neighbor discovery process and regard it as a combined task of all the nodes in every connected segment. Each sensor is entered as a coordinate in an effort in order to reduce the time to detect hidden sensors. Based on the simulation results, we demonstrated that the protocol detected the hidden nodes in the network

    Objectives: Build a mobile robot with an attached handler, with the capabilities of search the near area for objects, collect them, and put them in a specific place. Methods: In order to achieve the proposed goal, the robot must perceive its workspace somehow. The robot perceives its environment through a simple webcam that records nearby area in real-time. The resulting stream of images is then processed frame by frame such a way that surrounding objects and obstacles can be detected. Some filtering techniques can be used to remove noise - random occurrences of undesired colored pixels - from an input frame, an approach that is common to image processing applications. Once most of the noise has been removed, the frames are processed to obtain information needed to process what appears in the workspace. The objects discovered in the workspace are highlighted after a special library function has been called to find their contours. As soon as the areas of the contours found are defined, some calculations are performed to evaluate which of them meets the requirements to be a target and how close it is from the robot. The coordinates of the object in the frame are used to set the movements the robot needs to make in order to get to the target. Results: To test our system, we have set a workspace such a way that the robot could realize its work properly. The environment consists of a square area surrounded by a line that identifies the boundaries of the workspace as can be seen in Fig. 1. The objects in cylindrical form were chosen such a way that the robot’s gripper can grab them easily from every position possible. Some parameters were corrected later to ensure that a 180-degree turn could be realized without causing damage to the platform. The deposit of the object was as expected. Fig. 2 shows a snapshot of the moment the object is dropped. The moment following the deposit of the object was registered as well. Fig. 3 shows a snapshot of the moment the robot returns to the workspace. Conclusion: After reviewing the work presented the learner should be able to understand how filtering techniques can be used to remove noise - random occurrences of undesired colored pixels - from an input image, and how this approach is useful to image processing applications. The reader should also be capable of understand how edge detection techniques can be applied to identify objects of interest in a frame such the resulting contours may be processed later. Some other learning objectives include understanding how to choose components to be used in a robot and an overview of the software library required to run such applications.CAPE

    The New FASB & IASB Revenue Recognition Standards; Implementation and Effects

    In recent years there has been a growing recognition in the accounting profession that given the speed and scope of economic globalization, the need for comparability and transparency has never been more important. Accountants and financial professionals increasingly have recognized the necessity for accounting standards that are uniform across all industries and business entities. Investors, regulators, lenders, and ultimately the public must be able to compare very complex financial statements. With simplified rules, it becomes easier for all financial statement users to analyze the substance of these organizations and make informed decisions based on uniform standards. Financial professionals need these uniform standards to be able to easily and more efficiently analyze business entity finances to make investment and growth decisions. The government, for tax and other purposes, needs to see all financial statements in a uniform format to promote transparency and comparability. Thus, we have seen the Securities & Exchange Commission become an important proponent of these accounting changes. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have undertaken several projects to unify the accounting methods for various topics world- wide. In essence, the controversy of rules based versus principles based accounting frameworks is moving towards the latter and away from the former, yielding consistency and uniformity in accounting applications. Revenue recognition here will mean, when, why, and how business and other entities will recognize revenue from contracts and other transactions that may lead to revenue for these entities. This research article will study the pronouncement of the new revenue recognition standard, ASU2009-14 Topic 606, created by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) IFRS-15, as a step in the direction to unify accounting standards worldwide. We will analyze the reasons for the new revenue recognition standards; the new standards will be explained in detail, which will include accounting for contracts, disclosure requirements and other transactions that will be affected by the new standards. In addition, the current and future effects of these new standards will be studied in depth, the future of unification of financial standards will be discussed. Finally professional opinions will be given as to how different entities can adopt these new standards and adhered to the new laws stated in the pronouncement

    The quest to understand drug delivery to a specific site, quantity, or time has led to various method of trying to control drug delivery. If controllable drug delivery is mastered, managing and treating diseases will improve dramatically. Liposomes, microsomes and hydrogel are currently been used for these purpose. Hydrogels with three dimensional network of hydrophilic polymers are being considered because of their biocompatibility, minimal mechanical irritation, low cost, and ability to crosslink. Electro-responsive hydrogels are now been favored as to others such pH, temperature and light stimulated hydrogel because of the availability of the equipment, precise control on the magnitude of current, intervals and duration of electric pulses. Incorporating graphene in this hydrogel can also in improving drug delivery

    Evaluating Performance of Fault Current Limiters in Electric Substations Using Monte Carlo Method

    Application of Fault Current Limiters (FCL’s) seems a promising alternative to upgrade system breakers and switchgears in areas with heavy demand growth. These devices are mainly expected to improve reliability by reducing fault current values to levels interruptible by existing switchgears, and therefore ensuring safer and more reliable operation of power apparatus. Power substations are one of the ideal candidates for application of FCL’s. In this work, Monte Carlo simulation method has been used to study performance of fault current limiters and their impacts on different components. Results show effectiveness of these device in reducing the average fault current passed through power system components and reducing the associated burdens
