    Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) are comprised of sensor nodes that form the momentary network and do not rely on the support of any orthodox centralized infrastructure or administration. Such a given situation mandates every sensor node to get the support of other sensor nodes to advance the packets to the desired destination node, and specifically to the sink node. In this poster, we introduce energy efficient quality of service protocol for WMSNs, in this work the focus will be to study hidden node problems in WMSNs (Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks) and how it can affect the network performance

    Increasing vaccine production using pulsed ultrasound waves

    Vaccination is a safe and effective approach to prevent deadly diseases. To increase vaccine production, we propose that a mechanical stimulation can enhance protein production. In order to prove this hypothesis, Sf9 insect cells were used to evaluate the increase in the expression of a fusion protein from hepatitis B virus (HBV S1/S2). We discovered that the ultrasound stimulation at a frequency of 1.5 MHz, intensity of 60 mW/cm2, for a duration of 10 minutes per day increased HBV S1/S2 by 27%. We further derived a model for transport through a cell membrane under the effect of ultrasound waves, tested the key assumptions of the model through a molecular dynamics simulation package, NAMD (Nanoscale Molecular Dynamics program) and utilized CHARMM force field in a steered molecular dynamics environment. The results show that ultrasound waves can increase cell permeability, which, in turn, can enhance nutrient / waste exchange thus leading to enhanced vaccine production. This finding is very meaningful in either shortening vaccine production time, or increasing the yield of proteins for use as vaccines.https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.018704

    Detecting Malicious Behavior for the Sensors and Actuators Embedded in Medical Devices: A Hardware Approach

    The goal of this study is to investigate a behavior-rule based technique for detecting the malicious behavior of the sensors and actuators embedded in medical devices such as Vital Sign Monitor (VSM), Patient Analgesic Control (PCA), Cardiac Device (CD), and Continuous Glaucous Monitor (CGM). First, a set of behavior rules for both malicious and normal behaviors are proposed. Second, a transformation methodology has been used to transfer the proposed set of behavior rules into a state machine. Finally, a Finite State Machine (FSM) has been built using Altera ModelSim and Quartus II toolset. The simulation and synthesis results using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) demonstrate that our FSM hardware model can effectively identify malicious behavior from normal behavior

    China exports more to the United States than US exports to China. The resulting trade deficit against China has been a major issue during the presidential campaign and now is a real issue facing the Trump administration. President Trump has claimed repeatedly that China is “stealing our jobs” and China is a “currency manipulator.” The currency manipulation designation can easily escalate to a trade war with China. Several questions arise: (1) Is China a currency manipulator? (2) Is a looming trade war with China inevitable? (3) Who are the losers and winners in a trade war? These are not easy questions. The answers lie not only in sound economic analyses, but also in wise political judgements

With the rise of “Public History” and “Visual Anthropology,” Visual History (also termed Image History) is a new post-modern development, arising only in the late 20th century. It originated in Europe and developed rapidly in the United States, but remains still in its infancy in China. Maybe UB students would enjoy this, too

    This project addressed the need for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiatives at the early childhood level. Research states that early exposure to STEM initiatives and activities positively impacts elementary students’ perceptions and dispositions (Bagiati, Yoon, Evangelou, & Ngambeki, 2010; Bybee, & Fuchs, 2006; DeJarnette, 2012). The goal of this research was to positively impact the implementation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lessons in the Early Childhood classroom through providing professional development for the Early Childhood teachers. It was hypothesized that through professional development, resources, and support, Early Childhood teachers would build efficacy and build positive dispositions towards developing consistent STEAM lessons for their preschool students. The findings confirmed this phenomena, however, a gap regarding implementation still exists

    An Efficient Automated Technique and Smartphone Application for Epilepsy Seizure Detection Using EEG signals

    Epilepsy is a neurological disorder disease that affects the central nervous system of the human brain that can disrupt the activity of the nervous cells in the brain which will result in unusual behavior that can lead to loss of consciousness called epileptic seizure that can endanger the life of the patient. Therefore, automated epilepsy seizure detection is the solution to the limitation and time consuming of manual epilepsy monitoring and detection using EEG signals. Thus, using MATLAB R2014b, we developed a technique for epilepsy seizure detection using EEG signals, and we achieved an accuracy of 97%. For our main contribution, we developed an Android-based smartphone application for monitoring epilepsy detection based on the classification results of the EEG signal. A notification will be sent to the patient, doctors, and family members when an epilepsy seizure occurs. Once the EEG signal is classified as epileptic, the App will display a visual notification indicating that Epileptic Seizure has been detected. Moreover, it will trigger an alarm and send a message notification to all associated phone numbers. The main goal of our research is to develop an APP that will read the signal from the brain through a Bluetooth device, and process the signal on the APP to determine if it is normal or abnormal
