Design Thinking for Better Community in the City of Bridgeport
Get PDFFounded in 1821, the city of Bridgeport is not only the largest city in Connecticut, but one of the most diverse communities as well, with over 20 countries represented in a city of over 150,000 citizens. The goal for this project was to focus on revitalization, waste management and bringing the waterfront scene back to life. As Design Management student, we explored this problem through the lens of design thinking. Using the design thinking process, while considering profitability, sustainability and social responsibility, we developed a series of proposals which activate the existing key resources in order to bring more attention which will benefit the city

Restorative Justice: Isolation to Empowerment in the Campus Rape Adjudication Process
No full textViolence against women is a serious problem on colleges and university campuses in the United States today. This review finds that the current system of adjudication of campus sexual assaults is hostile and irresponsive to the needs of the victims and fails to protect or include the community in redressing the harm. This article highlights the state of sexual assaults on colleges and university campuses today and reviews the campus adjudication system under the standards of Title IX. In light of these findings, this article introduces restorative justice as an alternative form of justice to reform the adjudicatory process in campus sexual assault cases while complying with the mandates of Title IX. Restorative justice refers to a non-traditional approach to crime and justice intended to repair the harm to victims, hold offenders accountable, and restore safety to victims, relationships and communities (Umbreit & Armour, 2010). To the extent that the present quasi-judicial system of adjudication of campus sexual assaults routinely fails victims and the community, the author argues that restorative justice can be an approach used to respond to sexual assault on campus

Voice of the Moment: Henry Miller’s Paris Notebooks and the Problem of Autobiographical Fiction
No full textIn 2010 Yale's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library acquired Henry Miller's three "Paris Notebooks," which have been in private hands and read by only a few scholars over the past ninety years. They are a working writer's hodge-podge of undated diary entries, descriptions of places and people, lists, letters, rough drafts, and unpublished pieces. After close examination of the manuscripts, I assessed that these pages offer important insights, and I am writing a critical biography to expose their impact. The notebooks shed particular light on Miller's process, which seems far less "inspired" or "prophetic" and much more "workmanlike" than previously imagined. The first published result of this process, Tropic of Cancer, inspired generations of authors to write loosely autobiographical fiction, but also created a new problem when discussing these works. Many critics and even biographers conflate Henry Miller the person with the narrator or character of "Henry" in Tropic of Cancer and his other books. This is not a problem confined to scholarship on one author. Our literary culture continues to misunderstand poets and novelists who write in voices we imagine to be their own, whose "characters" speaking in On the Road or "Lady Lazarus" seem to be the same person as Jack Kerouac or Sylvia Plath, when in fact each is a persona, a voice of the moment
Servo Motor Control Using Variable Frequency Drive
No full textVariable Frequency Drive (VFD) refers to an adjustable-speed drive where alternating current electric motor can be controlled by changing the values of frequency and voltage. This process allows the motor to change its torque and speed, depending on the need or demand from the user. VFD is used in many different applications, ranging from small to big, while preserving all other relevant advantages. Some of these advantages that come with using VFD are better process control and regulation, extended equipment life, and reduced maintenance. The components of VFD are converter, DC bus, and inverter. We successfully integrated VFD with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) using sequencer Instruction to have a complete control over the AC servomotor, and operate motor with change in frequency of VFD. In this poster, we will examine what VFDs are and their applications. The outcome has market demand, especially that VFD applications contribute significantly to different industries

In order to translate the fundamental molecular interactions of biomolecules into the design of functional biomaterials, we have developed a model system that integrates nucleic acids and self-assembling peptides. These nucleopeptides serve as a small-model system for the study of the non-covalent molecular interactions involved in biomolecule self-assembly measured through impedance. The peptides are in this case our system of electronic circuit. The emergent electronic properties found in most of our 21 samples, which were measured by Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and analyzed by ZMAN software shows promise. This is because one of the most frequent application to show up was Battery and Supercapacitor which can be used in Biosensors

No full textThe aim of this research to clarify if there is any relationship and correlation between the Dubai-Oman crude oil (also called Fateh) and Oman stock market return and volatility with the political instability in the Middle east. This study aims to use technical financial analysis and modeling like Multivariate regression and linear regression to investigate and provide empirical evidence regarding the existence of a correlation between the aforementioned variables. To do this the author collected historical data about Dubai-Oman crude oil, that is a Middle Eastern benchmark in oil pricing to export crude oil of the Persian-Gulf to the Asia-pacific region. In addition, the historical data of the Oman stock market was extracted to achieve further information, such as to calculate the risk and volatility of the Oman stock market prices from 2008 to 2016. The data included monthly stock and Crude oil index observations and annually political stability, corruption perceptions and inflation, GDP, and constant prices. It has been collected, manipulated, and analyzed in order to provide a comprehensive report for this study The results of the present study are useful for energy policy makers, investors, and researchers for framing sound asset pricing models and making global asset allocation decisions; for the market participants in understanding the interaction of the stock markets of Middle East and African countries in relation to the crude oil market, as well as the global equity market uncertainties; and for those investors who make use of new financial tools to hedge oil price volatility risk and are potentially interested in futures and option trading on OVX
