How Tsinghua Became a World Class Research University: A Case Study on the Impact of Rankings on a Chinese Higher Education Institution
Today’s global knowledge economy has highlighted the need for the comparison of higher education quality. This need has been largely met by international university rankings. Although it is widely recognized that no one ranking system is completely objective, higher education stakeholders across the world still take rankings’ results seriously. Rankings, thereby, exert a great deal of influence on higher education institutions. Ranking affects higher education through various approaches. In a variety of practical manifestations, the idea of building a “world-class” university has been widely adopted by national governments that urgently want to improve competitiveness in the globalized knowledge economy. Chinese universities (in this thesis, China, or Chinese, refers to mainland China) have been steadily climbing up international rankings over the last decade. The extraordinary achievement has its roots in the initiative of establishing “world-class” universities. This study explored the actual course of events through which a Chinese university raises its statures in global rankings. By using an exploratory case study research design, the study attempted to answer the question about how a Chinese university became a world-class research university according to the global ranking systems. The findings revealed that an antiquated university has the potential to update to a high-quality modern research institution within a short period of time if talents, resources, and governance mechanism are adequately aligned

This paper posits that the late Shi‘i clerical activist Shaykh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr of Saudi Arabia represented a culmination of the nexus of regional political competitions, transnational religious knowledge networks, inter-generational tensions in contemporary Shi‘ism, and radical post-revolutionary Shi‘i politics. Thus, a more rigorous examination of his life holds relevance as a corrective to monolithic historiographies of the Saudi Shi‘a as a united community. Applying social movement theory and framing him within the processes of Globalization shows the complex intersection of religion and politics within a marginalized religio-political community

A New QKD Protocol Based Upon Authentication By EPR Entanglement State
Cryptographic world has faced multiple challenges that are included in encoding and decoding transmitting information into a secure communication channel. Quantum cryptography may be another generation of the cryptography world, which is based on the law of physics. After decades of using the classical cryptography, there is an essential need to move a step forward through the most trusted systems, especially enormous amount of data flows through billions of communicating channels (e.g. The internet), and keeping this transmitting information away from eavesdropping is obligatory. Moreover, quantum cryptography has proved its standing against many weaknesses in the classical cryptography. One of these weaknesses is the ability to copy any type of information using a passive attack without an interruption, which is impossible in the quantum system. Theoretically, several quantum observables are utilized to diagnose an action of one particle. These observables are included in measuring mass, movement, speed, etc. The polarization of one photon occurs normally and randomly in the space. Any interruption that happens during sending of a light will cause a deconstruction of the light polarization. Therefore, particles’ movement in a three-dimensional space is supported by Non-Cloning theory that makes eavesdroppers unable to interrupt a communication system. In case an eavesdropper tried to interrupt a photon, the photon will be destroyed after passing the photon into a quantum detector or any measurement device. In the last decades, many Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols have been created to initiate a secret key during encoding and decoding transmitted data operations. Some of these protocols were proven un-secure based on the quantum attacks that were released early. Even though the power of physics is still active and the Non-Cloning theory is unbroken, some QKD protocols failed during the security measurements. The main reason of the failure is based on the inability to provide the authentication between the end users during the quantum and classical channels. The proposed QKD protocol was designed to utilize some advantages of quantum physics as well as solid functions that are used in the classical cryptography. The authentication is a requirement during different communication channels, where both legitimate parties must confirm their identities before starting to submit data (plain-text). Moreover, the protocol uses most needed scenarios to finish the communication without leaking important data. These scenarios have been approved in existing QKD protocols either by classical or quantum systems. The matrix techniques also are used as a part of the preparation of the authentication key, where the end users communicate by an EPR (related to Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen theory in 1935) channel. The EPR channel will be supported by an entanglement of particles. If the EPR communication succeeded, transferring the converted plain-text is required. Finally, both end users will have an authenticated secret key, and the submission will be done without any interruption

As a society we are faced with pervasive and complex threats to human security. Human security can be defined as the protection of essential needs needed for society to thrive while protecting our environment and society as a whole. Threats to human security globally are broad reaching and impact society in varying degrees of severity. Some of these threats include poverty, hunger, lack of access to education and medical care, and conflict. This research primarily focuses on the lasting impacts of intractable conflicts and a possible model that could place power in the hands of everyday citizens to make lasting change in their communities. While community based response may not be able to rectify all facets of the conflict it could assist in making an environment that is ripe for negotiations to begin or restart. The conflict that is the focus of this case study used to provide a basis using the arts as a tool for innovative peacebuilding is the Arab/Israeli conflict
Security Implementation Using Present-Puffin Protocol
The Electronic Product Code Generation 2 (EPC GEN2) protocol does not have any technique to authenticate the Reader before it gives access to the Tag’s memory. In this paper, we use security implementation and mutual authentication between tag and reader of three different lightweight ciphers. We used Hummingbird (HB), PRESENT, and Extended Tiny Encryption Algorithm (XTEA) to encrypt the data and implemented all three algorithms to FPGA devices. We finally implemented PRESENT with PUFFIN as a trail and we got better results compared to the former three ciphers based on performance, data blocks and execution time

Comparison and Feasibility of Various RFID Authentication Methods Using ECC
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that has grown in popularity and in the applications of use. However, there are major issues regarding security and privacy with respect to RFID technology which have caught the interest of many researchers. There are significant challenges which must be overcome to resolve RFID security and privacy issues. One reason is the constraints attached to the provision of security and privacy in RFID systems. Along with meeting the security and privacy needs of RFID technology, solutions must be inexpensive, practical, reliable, scalable, flexible, inter-organizational, and long-lasting. To make RFID identifiers effective and efficient they must identify the item(s) while resisting attacks aimed at obtaining the tag’s information and compromising the system or making it possible to bypass the protection RFID tags are supposed to provide. Different authentication methods have been proposed, researched, and evaluated in the literature. In this work, we proposed our methodology in evaluating RFID authentication, and a few of the most promising authentication methods are reviewed, compared, and ranked in order to arrive at a possible best choice of protocol to use.http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/s1809290
Biased Online Media Coverage: Chiropractic and Stroke in Google News
Background: Chiropractic has professional tensions with other medical disciplines. This sets up a biased online media coverage of controversial issues, such as the unverified causal relation between chiropractic treatment and stroke. The objective of this study is to find and analyze recent online media texts relevant to the alleged causal relation between chiropractic treatment and stroke, using Google News search, including such characteristics of texts as tone and position on Google News Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Methods: We built a research design of quantitative content analysis of online media coverage of the unverified causal relation between chiropractic treatment and stroke throughout the year 2015, from January 1 to December 31, using Google News. We operationalized appropriate frames as keywords inclusive to this relation, to carry out a comprehensive search for relevant online texts. The collected media texts were extensively analyzed for frequencies of keywords and locations of keywords, and for tones as positive, neutral, negative connotation, or negative, measuring 12 variables on categorical scales. Results: Our search identified a total of 146 relevant online media texts, corresponding to the frames, which were all analyzed. The vast majority of identified texts had a negative tone or connotation, but most were not located on the first search page. Conclusions: The chiropractic profession is concerned about the biased media coverage of the unverified causal relation between chiropractic treatment and stroke. However, our data show that there are very few relevant media texts online within the timeframe of this study, and the majority of them appear after the first page of Google News SERP. But, most texts present a negative tone or connotation, and a lot of links to online and social media embedded in these texts extend their traffic and reach.https://doi.org/10.1186/s12998-018-0189-
