Effects of DIO2 Thr92Ala SNP on Thyroid Hormonogenesis: A Narrative Review of the Literature

    No full text
Background: Individual genetic differences affecting thyroid hormone production may lead to treatment resistance in hypothyroid patients. Identification of these differences may lead to better treatments. Objective: To review the current literature examining the effect of the Thr92Ala DIO2 polymorphism on thyroid hormonogenesis. Methods: Literature search of scholarly databases for primary human studies investigating the impact of the DIO2 Thr92Ala polymorphism on hypothyroidism was performed. Results and Conclusion: The Thr92Ala SNP of the DIO2 gene has been shown to negatively impact the conversion of inactive T4 to the active T3. Hypothyroid carriers of this SNP treated solely with levothyroxine (LT4) may have suboptimal T3 levels leading to poorer outcomes

Exploring Novice Teachers' Perceptions of edTPA as Indicator of Teaching Readiness

    No full text
edTPA is an educative performance assessment designed to measure teacher readiness. It has gained momentum across the country; yet, it has met with resistance from educators in various roles. Previous studies have reported concerns that the assessment is a barrier to the profession and that it undermines the educational value inherent in the clinical placement experience. The literature also showed value in the process as it relates to creating a common framework for evaluating programs and candidates and cultivating feelings of collegiality. However, previous scientific research focused on perceptions of teacher candidates, university professors and certification officers, and mentor teachers. This collective case study utilized mixed methods research to address the gap in edTPA literature related to novice teachers’ perceptions of the assessment as an efficacious tool. The researcher examined two research questions: 1.) What are novice teachers’ levels of self-efficacy regarding readiness to teach as measured by the edTPA Teacher Survey? 2.) How do novice teachers perceive the edTPA process as an influence on their professional practices? Framed by Bandura’s social learning and self-efficacy theories, a Likert-type survey and semi-structured interviews were used to explore participants’ recollections of the edTPA process and its influence on their current practice. Results showed that new teachers have high levels of confidence related to teaching readiness, but that the edTPA process was not an influential factor. New teachers felt that the edTPA process was redundant and tedious, interfered with their clinical experience, and is not relevant to daily practice as classroom teachers. A major outcome revealed that new teachers are using mastery experiences to build efficacy and hone their teaching craft in spite of the edTPA experience. Recommendations include a re-tooling of the edTPA assessment and preparation process to ensure a more authentic experience and meaningful long-term value for new teachers

    Healthy Lifestyle Options

    No full text
Many diseases, like cardiometabolic diseases, various cancers, hypertension, obesity, and associated diseases, have been linked to a healthier diet, good nutrition, and physical activity. young adults and adolescents who live a healthier lifestyle have many behavioral and psychological protective factors and also risk factors. This study focused on food consumption, exercise, & social life in order to determine public understanding of living a healthier lifestyle. This research, as many others before it, indicates that effective health promotion policy can represent a collectivist instead of an individualist ethos by including health prerequisites via a public health promotion policy, in which academic environments promote a healthy lifestyle strategy by improving the levels of a nutritious, healthy, and diverse menu in cafeterias and providing students with a variety of activities that promote exercise and healthy eating

Deconstructing Gender in the Elementary String Classroom

    No full text
At the elementary level, gender roles play a large part in shaping children’s current and future music education. Research demonstrates, that by fifth grade, children beginning instrumental instruction choose an instrument based on the perceived gender of the instrument (MacLeod, 2009). Perceptions of gender when choosing an instrument are constructed, in part, by the examples found in a child’s social environment. Through social pressure, modeling, and expressed gender conformity, children receive very clear messages about the social mores expected of their specific gender as well as those for the opposite gender. Following these elusive, and sometimes arbitrary, masculine, and feminine social mores, including stereotypes about music making, children can easily conform and miss out on new musical experiences and skills, thereby limiting their potential. It is essential to create an environment where children see different examples and possibilities so they can construct a new vision for themselves and not be constrained by social mores. Through pedagogical practices, modeling, music selection, and communication, teachers can challenge these constructed gender roles. This is crucial to create limitless possibilities so that children are not limited by a socially constructed norm. If that limitation is removed, children are then free to create a new idea of self in a gender sensitive environment

Applications of ECG Signal Analysis for R-R Complex Detection

    No full text
By analyzing and profiling Electrocardiogram signals, we developed a technique for detecting abnormal heartbeats of any individual accurately and focusing on RR complex timestamps. With 96% - 116% range of precision for healthy patients, abnormalities were detected and arrhythmia diagnosed with 92.43% classification rate for 1-minute period evaluation. Studies in the bioelectrical activity of the heart and beat classification methods, in general, can help diagnosing heart diseases, besides being used as early warning signs for debilitated patients

Future Of Trading And Investment Plan: Stocks Or Cryptocurrency?

    Get PDF
This paper mentions the price fluctuations of cryptocurrency and stocks under speculative environment. We have been seeing that the market trend points out an existence of a highly speculative bubble. Over the period of last 10 years, the trend in price movements of bitcoin has proved to be strongly speculative and on the other hand due to drastic change the world is seeing the prices of stocks has even been drastically upscaled. In this particular regard, investors might be curious about where and what instances might be fundamental point in these speculative price changes. When it comes to endogenous market movements, stocks have a significant issue to distinguish it from cryptocurrencies for the exogenous market movements to understand speculative bubbles better

    Blockchain-Enabled Wills and Testaments: Cryptowills

    No full text
Blockchain technology has the power to fundamentally change the way people have executed their wills for decades. This technology could be used to establish a distributed ledger of wills that would maintain a secure record of the wishes of a testator for the distribution of assets post mortem. A blockchain may serve as an accurate, authentic and safe record of the last wishes of a testator for the disposal of his/her assets. This study proposes the creation of a blockchain that encrypts a will to make it safer by reducing the possibility of its loss or being tampered with. Although this latest technology can challenge some of the current statutory laws, it is viewed as an achievable near future legal approach

Economic Growth and Freedom: A Cross-Country Analysis

    No full text
Understanding the nature and causes of economic progress has been a challenge to development economists. The classic theory sees the economy as a production machine that transforms labor, natural resources and capital into output. In development economics, attention has therefore shifted to how and what degree economies succeed in realizing their potential. Development economists have started to take an interest in economic and political institutions. They are interested in two fundamental questions: How do different institutions affect economic development and growth? And how and why do good institutions arise? Recent empirical work has analyzed country-level GDP data and various measures of legal, financial, and political institutions to uncover which institutions are associated with more rapid economic growth. This study contributes to this line of research by investigating the association between economic freedom, economic growth, and economic wellbeing

Phenomenological analysis on first-generation college students

    No full text
First-generation college students experience multiple and multi-layered barriers in pursuing higher education that are unique to this population. To date, there is limited research that has explored this population’s pursuit of higher education outside of quantitative research methodologies. Past studies found that first-generation college students experience intense family pressure, financial and social barriers, and a lack of support compared to their non-first-generation peers. Previous research also found that racial minoritized groups comprise a significant portion of first-generation students, which may require using qualitative research methodologies. It is important to understand the experience of higher education through first-person perspectives, as information will help colleges and universities provide better support needed for academic success
