    Computer Aided Modeling and Deign of a New Magnetic Sealing Mechanism in Engineering Applications

    This article introduces a new type of magnetic sealing mechanism that reduces the lubrication oil pollution and media gaseous leakage in general reciprocating machinery including air compressors and refrigerators. The feasible function and reliable performance of this new sealing mechanism are introduced and analyzed in this paper. The computer aided design, modeling and analysis are being used to study this new sealing mechanism, and the prototype of this sealing mechanism is being tested. The study indicated the proper function of this sealing mechanism. The major advantages of this sealing mechanism include: improved sealing capacity to prevent the gaseous leakage and oil leakage, simple and compact in structure, lower pre-cision requirement on surfaces of reciprocating pistons and shafts in production and manufacturing, and longer services in sealing life span.     Teaching MEMS Curriculum in Electrical Engineering Graduate Program

    © ASEE 2010Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) refer to devices and systems in the size range of 1 micron (1 micron=10-6m) to 1000 microns. Due to their small size, MEMS technology has the advantages of low weight, low cost, low power consumption and high resolution. MEMS have found broad applications in automobile, inertial navigation, light display, optical and RF communications, biomedicine, etc. World’s MEMS market is growing rapidly each year. To meet the strong market demands on MEMS engineers and researchers, we developed MEMS curriculum in our master program in School of Engineering since Fall 2005. In this paper, we shared our experience in teaching the MEMS curriculum in master program of Electrical Engineering department. Three core courses have been developed for MEMS curriculum. The course description, goals, prerequisites, as well as the topics covered in these courses are discussed. Multimedia technology is used in the teaching to enhance the teaching results. Several MEMS course projects using ANSYS simulation are designed to help student accumulate experience in MEMS device design and simulation. Students are fascinated by the MEMS field and continue their master project/thesis research in MEMS. The MEMS curriculum attracted tremendous interest among students, and the students’ feedback on the course have been excellent. This is part of our efforts to prepare students for the future need of economy revival

    © ASEE 2010Heavy machinery can cause great damage to the human who gets too close to the processing stage. For example: a finger can be cut off in a metal punch press; a hand can be cut off in an automated assembly line; holes can be drilled into the human body by industrial grade drill presses, milling machines and lathes. By modern safety laws, all heavy machines must have safeguards to prevent these types of accidents: cages or barriers to prevent the human’s entrance to the processing stage or automatic disconnects to shut down the machine when a human’s presence is sensed as being too close. But all too often these safeguards are sabotaged by the very workers they are meant to protect. Without safeguards, the worker can work faster, but the absence of safeguards eventually causes an accident. We study several cases and show that better engineering of safeguards is the only way to prevent these types of accidents. Engineering students who study these cases learn that not only is it necessary to know how to design a PLC or industrial control to safeguard the worker, but also they must design them in such a way as to thwart friendly sabotage. Improved design techniques include: better interlocks for shut-down controls and more rigid specifications for self-regulated safeguards
