The basic principle of Naturopathic philosophy is that healing happens from top down and in order of spiritual health, mental, emotional and physical health. The healing power of sounds vibrations affect energy centers, chakras also called points of higher consciousness which are associated with particular organ systems. This can explain how sound can be used to cause deep healing within our consciousness which reflects in improved physical and emotional health . Important findings from literature reviews that sound healing techniques can stimulate auricular branches of vagus nerve, synchronization of Right and left hemispheres and cause deep brain relaxation. This explains neurological basis of sound healing

Nowadays, research on breathing/respiratory functionality has received much attention across the medical fields as well as various cognitive/meditation, and systems/engineering research aspects. As lungs distribute oxygen to the entire body through blood flow via blood cells, any form of exercise that regulates the respiratory system, can improve the lung functionality in providing oxygen to the rest of the body, and as a result, can help diminish breathing/lung disorder symptoms. Breathing is one of the most essential bodily functions that humans perform involuntarily. In this dissertation, a novel conceptual virtual reality framework is presented that monitors breathing movements in real time. The acoustic signal of respiration of the user is used as the major input to this framework. An efficient, yet feasible technique is introduced to identify breathing movements (i.e. inhale and exhale), and a model is developed for lung capacity estimation through time and frequency analysis of the acoustic signal of breath. The developmental framework integrates these components along with a visualization feature where users can observe a virtually real animation of their lungs inflate and deflate as they inhale and exhale. One direct application of this framework is to aid users regulate their breath through real-time analysis of the respiration movements in a breathing exercise session. Users will be virtually/cognitively motivated to take the next coming breath more deeply if the previous one was insufficient. The theories, methodologies and approaches of this conceptual virtual reality framework using the smart-phone are discussed in this dissertation. The architecture and technical aspects of the offshore platform are also presented. Experimental results of the implemented framework on a number of subjects yield high accuracies for the breathing movement classification and lung capacity estimation modules

Review of methods used by chiropractors to determine the site for applying manipulation

    No full text
Background: With the development of increasing evidence for the use of manipulation in the management of musculoskeletal conditions, there is growing interest in identifying the appropriate indications for care. Recently, attempts have been made to develop clinical prediction rules, however the validity of these clinical prediction rules remains unclear and their impact on care delivery has yet to be established. The current study was designed to evaluate the literature on the validity and reliability of the more common methods used by doctors of chiropractic to inform the choice of the site at which to apply spinal manipulation. Methods: Structured searches were conducted in Medline, PubMed, CINAHL and ICL, supported by hand searches of archives, to identify studies of the diagnostic reliability and validity of common methods used to identify the site of treatment application. To be included, studies were to present original data from studies of human subjects and be designed to address the region or location of care delivery. Only English language manuscripts from peer-reviewed journals were included. The quality of evidence was ranked using QUADAS for validity and QAREL for reliability, as appropriate. Data were extracted and synthesized, and were evaluated in terms of strength of evidence and the degree to which the evidence was favourable for clinical use of the method under investigation. Results: A total of 2594 titles were screened from which 201 articles met all inclusion criteria. The spectrum of manuscript quality was quite broad, as was the degree to which the evidence favoured clinical application of the diagnostic methods reviewed. The most convincing favourable evidence was for methods which confirmed or provoked pain at a specific spinal segmental level or region. There was also high quality evidence supporting the use, with limitations, of static and motion palpation, and measures of leg length inequality. Evidence of mixed quality supported the use, with limitations, of postural evaluation. The evidence was unclear on the applicability of measures of stiffness and the use of spinal x-rays. The evidence was of mixed quality, but unfavourable for the use of manual muscle testing, skin conductance, surface electromyography and skin temperature measurement. Conclusions: A considerable range of methods is in use for determining where in the spine to administer spinal manipulation. The currently published evidence falls across a spectrum ranging from strongly favourable to strongly unfavourable in regard to using these methods. In general, the stronger and more favourable evidence is for those procedures which take a direct measure of the presumptive site of care– methods involving pain provocation upon palpation or localized tissue examination. Procedures which involve some indirect assessment for identifying the manipulable lesion of the spine–such as skin conductance or thermography–tend not to be supported by the available evidence.https://doi.org/10.1186/2045-709X-21-3

The development and advances in multidimensional medical imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have provided important radiological tools in disease diagnosis, treatment evaluation, and intervention for significant improvement in health care. Within the scope of this study, a comprehensive literature review is performed, and a new medical image processing framework is implemented. In this thesis proposing several computerized segmentation algorithms to extract cerebral vessels using a magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) database that permits the non-invasive visualization of blood flow through the effects of moving spins on the magnetic resonance signal. It is produced using the time-of-flight (TOF) method. The framework described here is based on two major stages: (a) Image enhancement and (b) Image segmentation. In order to improve the performance of the image segmentation stage, image enhancement methods are applied first by the gamma correction technique and spatial-mask processing. This stage is considered to be a part of the framework in the detection of gray-level discontinuities in images. Based on modified region growing method and adaptive maximum intensity difference parameters image segmentation, stage is performed by sliding block-by-block operations. Because of the small size objects of interest for the blood vessels in each 2D-MRA slice and complex surrounding anatomical structures (e.g., fat, bones, or gray and white brain matter), and the shortcomings typical of sampled data, such as sampling artifacts, spatial aliasing, and noise, which often cause the boundaries of structures to be indistinct and disconnected, new techniques for more accurate segmentation of a 3D cerebrovascular system from TOF-MRA data are proposed. My thesis present that due to the MRA data, blood vessels can be accurately separated from the background in each slice using the now method, the 3D model implemented in my framework. It created a neat mechanism for multi-resolution deformable curve, surface, and solid models to flow or grow into objects with complex geometries and topologies, and adapt their shape to recover the object boundaries. Experiments with real data sets confirm high accuracy of the proposed approach

The Role of Nutritional and Mindbody Therapies in Fibromyalgia Treatment

This thesis is being archived as a Digitized Shelf Copy for campus access to current students and staff only. We currently cannot provide this open access without the author's permission. If you are the author of this work and desire to provide it open access or wish access removed, please contact the Wahlstrom Library to discuss permission.Fibromyalgia is a potentially debilitating syndrome in which there is chronic pain and aching at certain points throughout the body known as “tender points”, with other concurrent symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety, and overall poor quality of life. It is one of the most common chronic pain conditions, affecting approximately 10-12 million people in the United States alone, with women being ten times more likely to be diagnosed than men. This syndrome is poorly understood and conventional therapies are only able to treat symptoms without getting to the root cause of the condition. Nutritional therapies are promising and potentially life-changing interventions for fibromyalgia suffers. Various studies demonstrate how beneficial certain dietary modifications and nutritional supplements can be in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia. Specifically, it has been found that avoidance of excitotoxins, and following a vegan or vegetarian diet are ways in which one can possibly restore health and possibly even reverse symptoms of fibromyalgia. Research also shows that supplementing with certain food-derived and nutrient supplements such as medical foods, chlorella, anthocyanidins, ascorbigen, and specific minerals could also be effective therapies. Furthermore, a great amount of mind body therapies have also been studied for their effects on fibromyalgia. Craniosacral therapy, sound therapy, and acupuncture are all subsets of mind-body therapy which have been researched in relation to decreasing pain and other symptoms often associated with fibromyalgia. Guided imagery, mindfulness and meditation, yoga, and tai chi, have also been studied as mind body therapies in fibromyalgia. Not only can these modalities decrease pain perception, they can also modify mood, sleep disturbances, and lead to increased energy and overall superior quality of life. This review on nutritional and mind body therapies used for fibromyalgia brings together a better understanding of potential interventions and their value in the treatment of individuals with this condition

Hardware Architecture Review of Swarm Robotics System: Self-Reconfigurability, Self-Reassembly, and Self-Replication

    No full text
Swarm robotics is one of the most fascinating and new research areas of recent decades, and one of the grand challenges of robotics is the design of swarm robots that are self-sufficient. This can be crucial for robots exposed to environments that are unstructured or not easily accessible for a human operator, such as the inside of a blood vessel, a collapsed building, the deep sea, or the surface of another planet. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on hardware architecture and several other important aspects of modular swarm robots, such as self-reconfigurability, self-replication, and self-assembly. The key factors in designing and building a group of swarm robots are cost and miniaturization with robustness, flexibility, and scalability. In robotics intelligence, self-assembly and self-reconfigurability are among the most important characteristics as they can add additional capabilities and functionality to swarm robots. Simulation and model design for swarm robotics is highly complex and expensive, especially when attempting to model the behavior of large swarm robot groups.http://dx.doi.org/10.5402/2013/84960

    Text Steganography Using Language Remarks

© ASEE 2013With the rapid growth of networking mechanisms, where large amount of data can be transferred between users over different media, the necessity of secure systems to maintain data privacy increases significantly. Different techniques have been introduced to encrypt data during the transfer process to avoid any kind of attack. One of these techniques is to hide the data inside another file which is called Steganography. In steganography, data is hidden inside a carrier file where anyone can see, but the hidden data inside it cannot be discovered. To this end, good algorithms can avoid the suspicion of having any attacker by applying some criteria before sending the data. In this paper, we present an algorithm to hide data using a text file as a carrier. Left-Right Remarks that represent Unicode symbols are used to hide the data inside the text file. Moreover, our algorithm can be applied in different size textual data
