    Vitiligo: A Look Into the Multifactorial Causes of Melanocyte Destruction and Theoretical Naturopathic Interventions

Vitiligo only effects 0.5-1.0% of the population without specificity for age, sex, or ethnicity (2). The lesions are well-circumscribed white cutaneous macules with histological studies showing absence of melanocytes in the lesions (2). Various factors described in all of the existing theories and individually and in combination, superimposed on pre-existing genetic susceptibility of the individual seem to all be able to trigger apoptosis in melanocytes (2). The apoptosis of melanocytes in the vitiligo lesions seems to be a result of a combination of all the different theories due to a pre-existing genetic susceptibility of the individuals with the disease (1). As a result, diagnostic evaluation of patients with vitiligo includes examining antibodies, allergens, and systemic inflammation levels. Naturopathic interventions based on the research focus on balancing redox reactions within the skin cells and decreasing systemic inflammation

    Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea which is defined as the suspension of breathing. OSA is generally caused by complete or partial obstruction of airway during sleep, making the breathing pattern irregular and abnormal for prolonged periods of time. Apnea can contribute to a variety of life threatening medical conditions, and can be deadly if left untreated. Nowadays, out of 18 to 50 million people in the US, most cases remain undiagnosed due to the cost, cumbersome and resource limitations of overnight polysomnography (PSG) at sleep labs. Currently PSG relies on a doctor's experience. In order to improve the medical service efficiency, reduce diagnosis time and ensure a more accurate diagnosis, a quantitative and objective method is needed. In this dissertation, an innovative method in characterizing bio-signals for detecting epochs of sleep apnea with high accuracy is presented. Three data channels that are related to breath defect; respiratory sound, ECG and SpO2 are investigated, in order to extract physiological indicators that characterize sleep apnea. An automated method was used to analyze the respiratory sound to find pauses in breathing. Furthermore, the automated method analyzed ECG to find irregular heartbeats and SpO 2 to find rises and drops. The system consists of three main parts which are signal segmentation, features extraction and features classification. Feature extractions process is based on statistical measures. Features classification process is learned through Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Neural Network (NN) classifiers. Moreover, a preprocessing technique is carried out to distinguish the R-wave from the other waves of the ECG signal. The approach presented in this dissertation was tested using downloaded polysomnographic ECG and SpO2 data from the Physionet database. In addition, to identifying sleep apnea using the acoustic signal of respiration; the characterization of breathing sound was carried by Voice Activity Detection (VAD) algorithm. VAD was used to measure the energy of the acoustic respiratory signal during breath and silence segments. From the experimental results for the three signals, it was concluded that the precision of classifying sleep apnea has an accuracy of 97%. This result offers a clinical reference value for identifying OSA instead of expensive PSG visual scoring method which is commonly used to asses sleep apnea, and could reduce diagnostic time and improve medical service efficiency

    How to Implement Marketing 2.0 Successfully

    The purpose of this research is to develop a model that would close the gap between marketing plans and strategies from one side and the advanced online collaboration applications platforms known as WEB 2.0 in order to implement marketing 2.0 smoothly without disrupting the working environment. We started by examining published articles related to marketing, Web 2.0, Customer Relationship Management Systems, CRM, and social media in a step to conduct an extensive review of the available literature. Then, we presented critique of the articles we have examined. After that, we’ve been able to develop the model we are proposing in this research. As this paper shows, the proposed model will help in transforming marketing plans and strategies from its traditional approach into, what we would like to call, marketing 2.0 approach smoothly. There are some unavoidable limitations due to the given time and scope constrains. The factors included in the proposed model doesn’t cover every related aspect, however, they cover the most important ones

If you are the author of this work and desire to provide it open access or wish access removed, please contact the Wahlstrom Library to discuss permission.Multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and autism, are associated with the presence of amyloid material in the brain which has been shown to lead to impaired synaptic transmission and neurotoxicity (1). However, children with autism are found to have excessive amyloid generated through a different pathway than those with Alzheimer’s disease (1). The type of amyloid present in the brains of children with autism is linked with brain overgrowth and impaired synaptic connections, but controversy exists about whether this material actually forms amyloid plaques in children (1). However, most research suggests that the early accumulation of amyloid material in childhood may eventually lead to amyloid plaque formation in adult autistics. One novel treatment for reducing such amyloid plaque formation is the disaccharide trehalose, which has been shown to enhance destruction of amyloid plaques and reduce neurotoxicity (2). Trehalose may prove to be safe and effective for both the treatment of prevention of amyloid plaques in children with autism
