    Modular Energy Efficient Protocols for Lower Layers of Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) emerged as one of the compelling research areas in recent years. It has produced promising solutions for several potential applications such as intrusion detection, target detection, industrial automation, environmental monitoring, surveillance and military systems, medical diagnosing systems, tactical systems, etc. WSNs consist of small size of sensor nodes that are disseminated in a targeted area to monitor the events for collecting the data of interest. Meanwhile, WSNs face many challenging problems such as high energy consumption, network scalability and mobility. These problems profoundly affect the lifetime of the network, limit the access to several WSN application areas, and the Quality of Service (QoS) provision parameters including throughput, latency, bandwidth, data buffering, resource constraints, data redundancy, and medium reliability. Although, there has been significant research conducted in WSNs over the last few years to maintain a high standard of communication, especially coverage, challenges of high power consumption, mobility and scalability to name a few. The major problem with WSNs at the low layers are the excessive energy consumption by the sensor’s transceiver. Other related challenges are mobility and scalability that limit the QoS provision. To handle these issues, novel modular energy efficient protocols are proposed for lower layers of WSNs. These modular based protocols improve the energy consumption, providing cross-layering support to handle mobility, scalability and data redundancy. In addition, there is a protocol that automates handling the idle listening process. Other protocols optimize data frame format for faster channel access, data frame transfer, managing acknowledgement time and retry transmission, check the capability of sensing the nature of environment to decide to use either active or passive mode that help save energy, determine shortest efficient path, packet generation rate, automatic active and sleep mode, smart queuing, data aggregation and dynamically selection of the cluster head node. All these features ensure the QoS provision and resolve many problems introduced by mobility and scalability for multiple application areas especially disaster recovery, hospital monitoring system, remotely handling the static and mobile objects and battlefield surveillance systems. Finally, modular energy efficient protocols are simulated, and results demonstrate the validity and compatibility of the proposed approaches for multiple WSNs application areas

    Investigating the origins of B12 biosynthesis in the most ancient roots of the tree of life

    Vitamin B12, also known as B12 or cobalamin, is a vital nutrient required across all branches of life, but the ability to synthesize this complex molecule de novo is limited to only a few archaea and bacteria. De novo synthesis begins with glutamate and utilizes over 30 gene products to produce an active cobalamin [1]. Previous studies suggest that of the available bacterial genomes, only half utilizing cobalamin can synthesize it [2]. The other half either take up complete cobalamin from the environment via an ABC transporter, or scavenge incomplete corrinoids (partial cobalamin molecules) as precursors to synthesize active cobalamin [3, 4]. The evolutionary histories and identities of multiple genes within these B12 pathways are unknown, leaving gaping holes in our understanding of the only source of biosynthesis of the vitamin so essential to human survival. Genes of particular interest to this investigator are those responsible for producing reductases that act upon the central cobalt atom of B12. Three reductases with unknown gene identities are located within the B12 biosynthetic pathway and it is the aim of this research to identify those genes responsible

    Monk Parakeets: Tolerance and Territoriality

    The Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is a self-sustaining introduced species of parrot found in Bridgeport and surrounding coastal towns. This species is noteworthy for its elaborate nests that it often shares other species of birds. It is also of interest because of its intelligence, beauty, and complex social life. Because they are non-native Monks are not protected by law, and power companies and others deem them a nuisance due to their noisy vocalizations and tendency to nest on buildings, generators and telephone poles1. Monk numbers are on the decline in our area. In previous studies, kestrels, owls, speckled teals, tree ducks, falconets, cuckoos, white monjita, cowbirds, squirrels, bats, and opossums have been observed in Monk nests.2 We hypothesize, the Monks’ tolerance of other species may expose them to parasites, predation and aggression. This study reports data from our observations of Monk Parakeets living on or near the UB campus

    An Integrative Approach for the Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme

It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children, and males between the ages of 20-39. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in females between 20-39 years of age as well. Though treatment consists of surgery, radiotherapy (postoperatively), and chemotherapy (primarily temozolomide), prognosis is poor with only 10% of patients surviving more than five years. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive form of brain tumor. There is a great need to understand the underlying mechanisms of tumor progression in order to define novel therapeutic targets for GBM. Adjuvant therapy such as herbs and nutrition can help improve cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents and should be considered in adding to the treatment protocol

    To Pay or Not to Pay - The Future of the College Athlete

    This study addresses the court cases of O’Bannon v. NCAA, Keller v. NCAA, Alston v. NCAA, and Jenkins v. NCAA, which represent the attacks aimed at current NCAA policies and distribution of funds, or lack thereof, to student athletes in higher education institutions. Each case makes an argument for why student athletes should be granted the right to benefit over their status as players. With profits for the NCAA and partners soaring into the billions, American society and the American legal system is starting to question who really should be benefiting from the performances that take place on the fields of higher education. The prevailing trend based on rulings in cases against the NCAA so far seems to be in favor of paying student athletes. While the NCAA and partners have a lot of resources at their disposal, it could be only a matter of time before they stop dedicating those resources to court proceedings due to this trend. Institutions of higher education could be impacted by sports recruiting changes and the end of the concept of the student athlete

    Analysis Precipitation to Seek a Good Place for Farm

    In this poster, we present how to employ Hadoop System including HDFS and MapReduce to analyze the precipitation data to find good places for farming. The precipitation data are collected from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and some formulas form Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to help to find places which have good precipitation for specific plant. In order to address this, we employ Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and MapReduce programming with banana as an example. Combining the weather data with the precipitation data, we can figure out the places which are good for banana grows. The implemented system uses two MR programs and Google Earth to implement the visualization
