COMSOL Simulation of a BioMEMS Disease-diagnostic Lab-on-a-Chip Device

    No full text
Efficient, portable and accurate Disease Diagnostic systems are in great demand for modern clinical testing industry. Such systems are especially needed for patients with complicated health conditions. For example, some patients may have a variety of diseases, conventional testing methods may not be able to check it out all at once. In case of an emergency, failure to accurately determine the cause could be fatal for the patients. In this poster, a complete lab-on-a-chip device for disease diagnosis based on BioMEMS (Bio-Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) technology is proposed. The proposed efficient disease diagnosis system integrates micropump, micromixer and gel electrophoresis component into a single chip. An on-chip control circuitry is used to store the pre-programmed blood sampling, buffering and chemical delivery sequence. Based on the theoretical analysis, a set of optimized design parameters of the lab-on-chip system are suggested. The working principle of the efficient disease diagnostic system is discussed. COMSOL simulation is used to verify the function of the system. The proposed efficient disease diagnostic system offers excellent efficiency, accuracy and portability compared to traditional disease diagnostic procedure. If integrated with other testing chips, it could provide a useful tool for biomedical field and be crucial for micro total analysis system

    Congenital Morgagni Hernia

    No full text
A rare congenital diaphragmatic hernia was discovered upon routine dissection of a female cadaver. Given the hernia's location in the chest cavity, it was identified as a Morgagni hernia. As the least common type of diaphragmatic hernia, the exact mechanism of development is unknown. However, this hernia has previously been associated with both longstanding, congenital conditions and acute, health conditions requiring intervention

EEG Signal Analysis for Effective Classification of Brain States

    Get PDF
EEG (Electroencephalogram) is a non-stationary signal that has been well established to be used for studying various states of the brain, in general, and several disorders, in particular. This work presents efficient signal processing and classification of the EEG signal. The digital filters used during decomposition of the input EEG signal have transfer functions which are simple and easily realizable on digital signal processors (DSP) and embedded systems. The features selected in this study; energy, entropy and variance; are among the most efficient and informative to analyze the EEG signal strength and distribution for detecting brain disorders such as seizure. Training and testing of the extracted features are performed using linear kernel (Support Vector Machine) SVM and thresholding in DSP algorithms and hardware, respectively. The experimental results for the digital signal processing algorithms show a high classification accuracy of 95% in the occurrence of seizure in epileptic patients. The techniques in this work are also under investigation for classifying other brain states/disorders such as sleep stages, sleep apnea and multiple sclerosis

The Effects of Water Stress and Apical Auxin Receptor Coverage on Phototropism in Arabidopsis thaliana

    Get PDF
Arabidopsis thaliana was first grown in the environmental chamber. The water tray and soil were kept moist for all plants as seedlings. They were kept in16 hours light and 8 hours of dark condition until they developed 4 true leaves. At this point, watering of one group of plants ceased in order to create a water stressed environment for this group. The other group continued to receive regular watering via hydrobubbles (the watering tray was kept dry). Select individuals’ apical meristems were covered with white out in order to block the auxin receptors (a total of 10 would be examined during the experiment). The two groups were then added to a secluded area where they were provided with blue light positioned on the left side for 16 hours a day. Each day the plants were rotated, the set of plants in front from each treatment (dry and watered) faced the light, during the rotation the two groups closest to the light were moved to the back, the next two being moved forward (as seen below). Every day the water for the regularly watered treatment was checked, hydrobubbles were used water in order to maintain a slow release of water to the plants (shown as the pink spheres in some of the images). The angle of 10 covered and 10 uncovered plants was measured at 3 different dates during the experiment to see the effects of water stress and auxin receptor coverage on phototropism

Piezoelectric Materials Based Scaffolds Fabrication for Cardiamyocyets Cell Growth

    No full text
Tissue engineering is concerned on the growth of tissue making organs for implantation back to the donor himself. Instead of using organs transplantation and expose the patient for immunological rejection possibility, implantation is another alternative approach. Artificial scaffolds have to be fabricated base on the targeted organ. The projected scaffolds should have designed shapes with a suitable mechanical toughness, wettability, porosity, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Ideally, the projected scaffold should also allow imitating of the normal cell microenvironment in order to produce a tissue with the same biological functions as found in a body. Cardiomyocytes or cardiac myocytes required specific type of scaffold and in this work we developed a pattern of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a piezoelectric, fluoropolymer, and a highly non-reactive using electro spinning to form a nanoscale fibers from a liquid as a concept of energy harvesting from heart beating using piezoelectric material. Three different polymer solutions were made using 15%, 12% and 10% of PVDF each in DMF under specific condition and quantities. The second part of this experimental work is to fabricate the PVDF nanofibers from polymer solutions in the presence of conductive graphene nanoplateletes under specific condition and quantities. All produced nanofibers will be characterized and compared using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) for choosing optimal fibers

An Enhanced Communication Protocol for Location Privacy in WSN

    No full text
Wireless sensor network (WSN) is built of many sensor nodes. The sensors can sense a phenomenon, which will be represented in a form of data and sent to an aggregator for further processing. WSN is used in many applications, such as object tracking and security monitoring. The objects in many situations need physical and location protection. In addition to the source location privacy, sink location privacy should be provided. Providing an efficient location privacy solution would be challenging due to the open nature of the WSN. Anonymity is a key solution for location privacy. We present a network model that is protected against local, multilocal, and global adversaries that can launch sophisticated passive and active attacks against the WSN.http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2015/69709

The Financial Setting for FDI Inflows into The Czech Republic and Slovakia

    No full text
This study examines the relationship between foreign direct investment in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and such potentially explanatory factors as trade flows, measures of economic and financial stability, and country risk. The authors find that as the Czech and Slovak Republics progress toward market economies, some policy points to consider include: transparency of markets, economic systems, social and political organizations; an increase in commerce and investment, which makes reversals of reforms less likely and the condition of financial factors that contribute to increased investment
