MIGRATION-REMITTANCE NEXUS IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY: EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA
This study analyzed the relationship between migration and remittances in Nigeria. Employing the Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, this study empirically investigates the determinants of remittances on the inflows of remittance to Nigeria by employing time series data from the year 1977 up till 2018. Our findings validated the simple theoretical consideration which states that flow of remittances should be encouraged by chief macroeconomic determinants like exchange rate, rate of inflation and financial development. This study finds that these variables together played vital roles in influencing the inflows of remittance to Nigeria. Specifically, migration, inflation and exchange rate have significant impact and favorably encourage remittances inflows from abroad to Nigeria. On the contrary, remittances negatively responded to financial development. Furthermore, the relative significance of these determinants of remittances varies. Specifically, migration is more responsive compared to exchange rate and inflation because the elasticity is higher, also migration and exchange rate are found to have better statistical influence compared to inflation in Nigeria
EFFECT OF RISK COMPONENTS ON OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA A STUDY OF LISTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA
oai:ojs2.gujeds.com.ng:article/1The main objective of this study is to examine effect of risk components on operational efficiency of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The data to be used for the study will be extracted from secondary sources only. The data will be panel data which will be subjected to time and cross-sectional attributes and this will enable us to study innovation and performance of firms over time and as well as across the sampled quoted banks. The findings of the study revealed that credit risk increases the operational efficiency of Deposit money Banks. Also, the study found that liquidity risk has negative and significant effect on operational efficiency. The result also found that capital adequacy has positive and significant effect on operational efficiency. The study recommended that the management of the Deposit Money Banks should device viable measurement for evaluating the risk components confronting the banking operation and not to rely on the bank model with an assumption that that risk is incorporated into bank output without explicitly modeling its role in explaining inefficiency. This is because failure to account for risk-taking may lead to biased estimations of bank efficiency and misleading estimates of scale economies and cost elasticities
DOES ENTREPRENEURSHIP REDUCE POVERTY IN KATSINA STATE?
This paper examined the impact of entrepreneurship development program on poverty reduction in Katsina State. Primary data were collected with the use of a well-structured questionnaire from a sample of 568 respondents. The data were sourced using Survey method of data collection, using in-depth instrument of Questionnaire techniques on some selected representative samples of entrepreneurship training participants in Village craft and Shongai fish skills acquisition centre in the state. The data are estimated through various techniques of estimations such as Descriptive statistics, Generalized ordered logit and linear Regression models for it analysis. The findings of the study suggested that access to credit, primary level education, marital status, (unmarried), and complimentary businessactivities have significantly impacted on poverty reduction in Katsina State. The policy implication is that youth unemployment and poverty can be reducing through entrepreneurship activities
IMPACT OF PUBLIC DEBT ON ECONOMIC GROWTH: EVIDENCE FROM VECM IN NIGERIA, 1981-2021.
Public debt is one of the major challenges facing developing economies. The paper examines the impact of public debt on economic growth in Nigeria from 1981 and 2021. The study employed Johansen co-integration test within Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Granger Causality test were also used in detecting the causal relationship among the study’s variables. The Findings of the Johansen co-integration result reveals presence of long run relationship amongst the variables. The VECM result indicates that; log of External Debt (LEDEBT) exhibit negative impact by -0.9% and -0.003% decrease in GDP in the long run and short run periods respectively. In the same vein, log of domestic debt (LDDEBT), shows a long run positive impact on Nigeria’s GDP but in the short run; LDDEBT lead to -0.052% decrease in GDP. Accordingly, the result of the Granger causality test exhibit presence of causality effect running from LEDEBT and LDDEBT to GDP in the long run with no causal effect in the short run, Therefore, the study recommends that, government should refrain itself from excess borrowing externally and lay emphasis on utilizing the domestic barrowings to finance capital and recurrent expenditure which will eventually foster economic growth
EXAMINING THE ROLE OF MARKETING RESEARCH ON INCREASED PROFITABILITY IN NICON INSURANCE COMPANY KADUNA STATE NIGERIA
The objective of this study was to examine the influence of marketing research on the profitability of NICON insurance in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research sampling the opinion of 14 staff of NICON Insurance, composed of senior management staff, administrative staff, and marketing staff. Their opinion was collected using a structured questionnaire. The data obtained was analyzed by tabulation and percentages, and the formulated hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient method. The findings revealed that marketing research exerts a statistically significant effect on NICON insurance profitability. More so, the study found that marketing research has a statistically significant effect on NICON insurance total premium. The study concluded that for insurance firms to maximize profit at an optimum level, they have to expand the scope of marketing research and development in order to eliminate the risk involved in today’s marketing trend. The study therefore recommended that NICON Insurance Kaduna State should fully embrace the marketing research tasks, and establish departments or units dedicated to this crucial task, staffing them with qualified and experienced personnel. They should also step up their research to deliver timely information on the development of insurance products and other aspects of their business. Furthermore, through market scenario research, they have to make a consistent effort to track the level of client satisfaction with their offerings
THE EFFECT OF FISCAL POLICY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MONETARY POLICY AND MACROECONOMIC VARIABLES IN NIGERIA
This study examined the effect of fiscal policy on the relationship between monetary policy and macroeconomic variables in Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation. The study employed a two-stage least square technique as estimation technique, where in the first step; the empirical models of fiscal and monetary policies were separately estimated. In the second step, the dependencies of each policy on the other are then included, to capture the effects of each on the other. Annual time series on the various monetary policy and fiscal policy variables from 1981 to 2020 were obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin. Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test was used to examine the stochastic properties of the series. The findings revealed that Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation, and money supply are negatively related to monetary policy rate in Nigeria. Also, government expenditure limits the effectiveness of monetary policy in the management of both economic growth and inflation in Nigeria as the effect on inflation reduces from 0.06 to 0.02 and the effect on GDP changes from negative to positive. The study recommended that there should be an establishment of better consultation between both policies in order to secure high and sustainable fiscal and monetary policy mix and hence economic growth with price stability
TRANSMISSION MECHANISM FROM EXCHANGE RATE TO CONSUMER PRICE INDEX: EVIDENCE FROM VAR MODEL IN NIGERIA
The direction of flow is not certain in which variations in the exchange rate could be transmitted to the consumer price index. To examine the transmission mechanism arising from the exchange rate to consumer price index in the Nigerian economy, eight variables-VAR model was employed in this regard. The data for the study span from the period first quarter of 2009 to the fourth quarter of 2021. The results had it that exchange rate devaluation is transmitted directly to consumer price index through a rise in the net exports and also the aggregate demand. The study therefore, recommends a rise in terms of outputs in local production so that the weight of the inflationary impact of the exchange rate devaluation could be minimal
IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON THE EXPANSION OF HIGHER EDUCATION
In this paper, we have pointed out some of the effects of globalization; particularly, on the Nigerian education system and the economy in general. Though emphasizing the negative aspect of it in line with view of scholars that argued globalization is “the re-colonization of African countries” (ILO, 2004). As much as globalization is viewed as the root of all evil by some scholars, it is viewed by others as the root of all good. From our findings it is evident that people with capital assets, education and other skills have benefitted from globalization. The research showed how globalization has led to the increase in the volume of investment in Nigeria, greater democracy, revolutionized the Information and communication Technology sector, reduced transport cost, large investment in education and diffusion of knowledge, (ILO, 2004). On the other hand, globalization has led to the economization of education, migration and brain drain of developing countries like Nigeria, loss of the traditional values of education, gender inequality, high debts, and unfair global rules. Scholars have also suggested poor or inadequate funding of education in many countries as a result of globalization. In order to respond effectively to globalization, we recommend Nigeria needs to develop its national capacities, effectively regulating its economic activity, promote fairness and equity, provide basic public services, and effectively participate in international negotiations
RENEWABLE ENERGY AND THE STATE OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY IN NIGERIA
The study aimed at examining the effect of renewable energy on quality of the environment in Nigeria from 1980 to 2019. The ARDL bound test of cointegration shows the presence of a cointegration relationship among the analyzed variables. In the long run renewable energy is related negatively with to CO2 emissions, meaning that an increase in renewable energy enhances the quality of the environment by reducing the number of CO2 emissions in the long run while in the short-run renewable energy is positively related to carbon emissions, meaning that increases in the number of renewable energy deteriorate the quality of environment in the short run. The Granger causality test proposed by Toda and Yamamota (1995) reveals that a bidirectional causal relationship exists between renewable energy and the number of CO2 emissions, meaning that changes in renewable energy affect the quality of environment and at the same time changes in the quality of environment affect the renewable energy in Nigeria. Policymakers should implement a multilateral mechanism to ensure energy efficiency and to promote the use of renewable energy
