    No full text
Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Public spaces embody the intricate interplay of power dynamics influenced by governmental, societal, and economic factors, shaping spaces to reflect idealized lifestyles guided by urban management, societal norms, and capitalist economies. However, the emergence of playful actions disrupts these norms, offering fresh perspectives on power structures and public spaces. Activities characterized by playfulness, illuminated by play theory, advocate for innovative approaches to public space design, exploring play's transformative role in nurturing social connections and enriching urban life while reshaping social interactions and landscapes. Focused on Şeyh Said Square and nearby parks adjacent to the Diyarbakır walls in Turkey, this study employs field research, observations, and surveys. Renowned for its vibrant culture and diverse societal representations, this locale fosters unique connections among users, authorities, and urban designers. Playful actions serve as a catalyst for challenging established power dynamics and fostering greater participation in the design and use of public spaces. Acknowledging play as fundamental in urban design, the research explores alternative narratives, emphasizing social engagement and public space utilization. Through a comprehensive and participatory methodology, it highlights play's significance in promoting participation and shaping urban design. No full text
Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Due to an ever-increasing change towards a circular economy and energy self-sufficiency, the energy production and the use of it must be redefined. This does not stop at the water- and wastewater industry, which is responsible for a large amount of a municipality's energy consumption. However, WWTPs can also make a significant contribution to the energy transition and circular economy. Sustainable hydrogen, produced decentrally, regionally and for regional consumers, will play a important role in the future energy supply. The aim of this study is to identify possible potentials and technologies for local hydrogen production, conceivable alternative uses, research programmes, funding opportunities, but also challenges and limits with regard to the possibilities of hydrogen production at the approximately 10,000 municipal WWTPs in Germany. Key words: Hydrogen production, regionality, wastewater management, circular economy, sustainabilitypublished versio

Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024This paper focuses on Nigerian women’s experiences of prostitution in a public space, the Bois de Vincennes in Paris, as democratic experiences questioning the value of freedom in pluralistic societies. It is based on the very provisional outputs of a collaborative field-research. It relies on an ecological-pragmatist perspective of analysis that suggests to consider public spaces as frontiers of capacitation: in-between spaces where Nigerian women reinvent themselves in the face of international and local, planned and unplanned, events. The aim of the paper is to rethink the political and cultural value of public spaces for just and inclusive territorial transformations. How social media influences rural spatial practice and place identity: A case study of Fuling Village

    No full text
Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Social media have opened up new growth opportunities for the development of tourism in traditional villages. It can not only attract the attention and sustainable development of villages, but also make villages dependent on the outside world's imagination of "tradition" and "the gaze of the other" in spatial remodeling. In this paper, we take Fuling Village as a case, and explore the spatial practice and changes in villagers' local identities triggered by social media in the context of rural tourism. It is found that (1) the village is changing from a local space to an fluid space under the shaping of social media.(2) Social and power relations in the social media space influence there modeling of local space, forming the "production of virtual space".(3) The development of rural tourism affects the community and rebuilds place identity. The development of traditional villages needs to pay more attention to refining and transforming local characteristics, preserving originality and promoting individuals' place identity in order to achieve sustainable development.published versio

Guiding principles for the 15-minute city in peripheral areas: the emc2 model

    No full text
Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024The 15-minute City (15mC) is a novel urban planning approach aiming at affordable and sustainable mobility while enhancing urban life. Implementing this concept in car-dependent outskirts and suburbs poses significant challenges due to their lacking essential morphological features. Cities, especially in metropolitan areas, function as interconnected networks rather than standalone walkable neighbourhoods, complicating the implementation further. The Evolutive Meshed Compact City (emc2) offers a networked pedestrian-based 15mC model suitable for many European peripheries. The model relies on a set of guiding principles and detailed specifications, which are interrelated across different scales. To evaluate its potential in European metropolitan peripheries, a research design is proposed, focusing on its ability to facilitate a successful transition to a 15mC. Additionally, the paper compares the emc2 model with other proposed 15mC solutions. Keywords: 15-minute City, Suburbs, Networked Densification, Pedestrian-Friendly Urban Formpublished versio

Flood Risk Management in the Face of Climate Change: Strategic Spatial Planning for Integrating River Basin Management and Residual Risk

    No full text
Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024In response to the impacts of climate change, the increasing risk of flooding has traditionally been addressed by identifying flood-prone areas using floodplain maps to regulate land development. However, the interconnected dynamics of runoff in the river basin and levee effect have highlighted the potential threats posed by residual flood risk. Consequently, this paper integrates residual risks and flood source areas into flood risk management within the river basin. Utilising the SOBEK model, this study simulates three flood scenarios—without levees, with existing levees, and with failed levees—to conduct flood hazard analysis and flood source-to-impact analysis. Based on these findings, this paper proposes land use management strategies aimed at enhancing water resilience through strategic spatial planning in the face of climate change. No full text
Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Zoning guidelines are technical methods commonly employed in various types of urban planning, including comprehensive urban design, landscape planning, regulatory detailed planning, and architectural features and styles planning. These guidelines aim to protect and define urban character, controlling spatial forms in specific districts. Often, when different zoning types are compiled without clear distinctions, redundancy and contradictions can arise, leading to inefficient management. This article, in conjunction with relevant zoning guideline examples, distinguishes between the zoning guidelines corresponding to the four types of planning by comparing their coverage, control objectives, content, and methods. It defines the roles, functions, and interrelationships of these guidelines at different scales. This approach aims to systematically control urban landscapes through a layered and cumulative process, effectively addressing different levels.
