Mies & the Inheritance of Modernism: Exhibition at SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis

    Get PDF
At the occasion of the "àth anniversary of the birth of Mies van der Rohe, on 27 March 2016, the exhibition Mies & The Inheritance of Modernism was opened on 10 April 2016, in SCHUNCK*, Heerlen, The Netherlands. The project was focused entirely on the re-evaluation of the modernist architectural heritage. The central question which led the whole project was: how much do we value the inheritance of modernism and how should we deal with it? The exhibition was contextualized by an international program in which symposia, lectures, film screenings, excursions and guided tours provided a deeper knowledge. During a four-month period, SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis radiated modernism and created, to some extent, a new supra-regional and international focus and mindfulness (Achtsamkeit) both for visitors, residents and politicians. The surprising awareness of visitors about the importance of their own region, but also the understanding of the cultural-historical value of modernist buildings as well as the great respect and honest recognition of the very accurately restored masterpieces, testify to this rising awareness. The project was developed with a dual structure: an international and a regional perspective on modernist inheritance

What “Rights” for 20th Century Monuments ? A troubleesome topic for a Meeting at the Accademia di Architecttura in Mendrisio

    Get PDF
The protection of 20th century architecture has by now become a fully–fledged part of the dis- cipline of preservation, and even the heritage of the second post–war period is increasingly recognised as worthy of conservation. Nonetheless, in practice, this cultural awareness still clashes with the dif- ficulties attached to adapting buildings to present day regulations. Even when intervening on buildings that are officially recognized as “monuments”, from one country to another and even from one region to another in the same country, there is great variety in how dispensations from applicable regulations are allowed

THE FUTURO: History, Design and Construction in Finland and the USA

    Get PDF
The Futuro by Matti Suuronen reflects the confidence in the possibilities of plastics as a new building material of post-war times. A number of the 70 to 100 Futuros that were built worldwide still exist and, generally, they are now being preserved. A comparison of four restoration approaches of Futuro Houses, dating from 2007 to 2018, has given insights into the specific constructive features, modifications and the challenge of their complex materiality and innovative design. This explains the complexity of the conservation process

The Plastics Architect by Arthur Quarmby : and more reviews

Among the broad selection of publications on plastics are two in particular that have been selected for a detailed response. The oldest, ‘The Plastics Architect’, was clearly written for architects and designers as something of a primer for understanding the material, ‘how to do it’ and ‘why you should love it’. It is most likely that the book was largely written before the 1973 oil shock, but its publication in March 1974 coincided with the end of the crisis by which time the price of oil had risen 300%. The economic viability of plastics in building was much reduced and there is a palpable disjunction between the content of the book and the world into which it was launched. The most recently published of the selected books, ‘Life in Plastic’ is a wide collection of articles intended for a contemporary and critical reader that takes in a longer view of the cultural history of plastics. Its various approaches examine our perceptions of the material, the optimistic and pessimistic iterations of plastics and waste, and its shaping of global society in the past and for the future

MODERN WORLD HERITAGE: Reflections on Ukraine

    Get PDF
The article reflects on the status of modern World Heritage sites in general and in particular related to Ukraine, and the specific typologies of infrastructure and modern urban planning – both closely related to each other. The current war and the disastrous destruction of urban and civil infrastructure have again raised the question of its public perception, official recognition and national and international protection. Next to the internationally known Derzhprom complex, the cnstruction of Dneprostroj, the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station (DneproGES/DniproHES), the erection of a new industrial combine in direct proximity to it, and the new socialist city Sotsgorod—known as Zaporizhzhia—are impressive examples of urbanization and testimonies of the 20th century that need to be protected
