Combining Artificial Intelligence with Traditional Chinese Medicine for Intelligent Health Management

    Get PDF
The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is being referred to as the beginning of "the fourth industrial revolution". With the rapid development of hardware, algorithms, and applications, AI not only provides a new concept and relevant solutions to solve the problem of complexity science but also provides a new concept and method to promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this study, based on the research and development of AI technology applications in biomedical and clinical diagnosis and treatment, we introduce AI technologies in current TCM research. This can have applications in intelligent clinical information acquisition, intelligent clinical decision, and efficacy evaluation of TCM; intelligent classification management, intelligent prescription, and drug research in Chinese herbal medicine; and health management. Furthermore, we propose a framework of "intelligent TCM" and outline its development prospects

Advances of Wear Reduction of Artificial Joints: Regenerative Cartilage Artificial Joints

    Get PDF
The lifespan is a major concern for artificial joints when more younger patients are taking the total joint replacement operations. Wear is recognized as the main reason for the premature failure of implanted joints. So lowering the wear is one of the most effective way to extend the lifespan, which has attracted much efforts in both academia and industry. Development of new bio-materials is a main approach but contributes less in recent year. The research on surface roughness hasn’t given a definite solution in directing the industrial practice. The surface texturing functions well in improving the friction and wear of artificial joints, but the working mechanism is still ambiguous. Cushion or buffering layer is a promising solution to introduce elastic contact between the bearing surfaces, but cannot totally avoid debonding or shear stresses currently. Latest progress on regeneration of articular cartilage makes it possible to form hyaline cartilage in vitro onto bio-implant surfaces to reproduce the original properties of healthy joints which is definitely the most promising way

Preventing Consumers to Spin: Are Upgraded Macroprudential Measures Needed?

    Get PDF
In this provocative, exploratory article, we enrich the emerging concept of consumer financial spinning by first analyzing the US market at the time of the Global Financial Crisis, when it was filled with avid, sometimes naïve mortgage buyers, to outline the phenomenon of consumers becoming desensitized to risk, but remaining responsive to marketing “sweetheart deals” (sweeteners) aimed at luring them into buying houses repeatedly. They thus enter into a vicious circle of debt. In line with the data percolation methodology, which recommends looking at a new phenomenon from contrasting analytical angles, we then conduct a virtual reality test to see if we can artificially induce such behavior. Based on our bi-angle results, we highlight the role of questionable marketing and legal practices that entice consumer spinning, thus calling for macroprudential measures, given that past and current regulations have missed the opportunity to fully protect consumers in this regard

India is a capital of Diabetes and in the last 25 years the increase in diabetics in India has been very steep. Diabetes is a part of metabolic syndrome and is a very fast spreading lifestyle disease. At the onset, we want to emphasize early diagnosis of this disease as it can help prevent complications of the disease. In cases, when diabetes management is started early it can help us reverse diabetes. The first step to manage diabetes is diet and lifestyle changes. There are several diets recommended for diabetics such as high protein diet, Atkins diet, Low carbohydrate diet, ketogenic diet and cyclic keto diet and many more. In this article we are discussing a case of a diabetic woman who was introduced to cyclic keto and lifestyle therapy as a first line management. This case highlights the importance of cyclic ketogenic diet in management of difficult diabetic cases successfully. The author has described everything in detail to help doctors and patients follow it on their own and see the positive effects of cyclic ketogenic diet in diabetic patients

Approaches Towards the Detection of Sepsis: A Review

    Get PDF
Our understanding of sepsis and its mechanisms have never been more important than they are today. In recent years we have seen sepsis manifest from bacterial infection to a broader range of pathogens, each with its unique responses from the body. This increased interest has only been further intensified by the Covid-19 pandemic and the renewed global attention towards viral-based infections and their interactions with sepsis. From Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) to sequential organ failure assessment score (SOFA), studies have shown that early diagnosis is key, as well as finding the root of the infection to prevent further damage caused to the patient. Prompt treatment has contributed to the overall improvement of sepsis outcomes. This review summarizes the development of the cause, diagnosis, and treatments available to date

Axillary Arch (Langer’s Arch) in an 80 year-old White Male Cadaver

    Get PDF
Recognizing the presence of an Axillary arch (Langer’s arch or muscle) can be important for clinical associations, such as when patients present with compression neuropathies and syndromes related to the upper extremity. Its presence is also relevant during surgical interventions involving the axillary fossa, such as sentinel node biopsy axillary lymph node dissection and pectoralis muscle flaps. While neglecting to identify variations rarely leads to an increase in mortality, it is essential to identify for clinical relevance. It is similarly important to anatomical instructors in the education of future medical providers. During cadaveric dissection of fifty cadavers, we observed a unilateral Axillary arch (Langer’s arch or muscle) found on the left side of an 80 year-old White Male cadaver inserting onto the tendon of the pectoralis major muscle. This anatomical variation is commonly referenced in the literature for its clinical significance. Operating surgeons, vascular interventionalists, and oncologists should be aware of this anatomical variant as it occurs while treating diverse patient populations

The Primary patency in endovascular treatment of femoropopliteal lesions with Eluvia Paclitaxel-Eluting Stent: single-centre experience.

Restenosis of the obstructive lesions in the superficial femoral or proximal popliteal artery, treated with angioplasty or bare nitinol stenting, frequently occurs. Paclitaxel-eluting stents have been developed to protect against restenosis with the sustained antiproliferative agent release over time. The aim of this study was to report the results about the primary patency in a cohort of patients with long and complex femoropopliteal lesions treated with the Eluvia Drug-Eluting Vascular Stent. The single-center, retrospective, single-arm, study enrolled 61 patients with chronic, symptomatic or asymptomatic, lower limb ischemia and stenotic or occlusive lesions in the superficial femoral artery or proximal popliteal artery. Mean lesion length was 129,3 ± 88,6. Efficacy measures at 18 months included primary patency, defined as duplex ultrasound peak systolic velocity ratio of ≤2.4 and the absence of target lesion revascularization or bypass. The Kaplan–Meier estimate of primary patency through 18 months was on average 83% and precisely 87.5% for patients TASC II A, 91% for patients TASC II B, 83% for patients TASC II C and 73% for patients TASC II D. Six months after the initial procedure primary patency was on average 91,5% and precisely 87.5% for patients TASC II A, 91% for patients TASC II B, 89,5% for patients TASC II C and 100% for patients TASC II D. No stent fractures were identified, and no major target limb amputations occurred. This study confirmed the efficacy of he paclitaxel-eluting Eluvia stent to treat long and complex femoropopliteal lesions
