    No full text
Handicrafts have historically always been practiced in Paraná Coast, Brazil, being a source of income for dozens of families, however this scenario has undergone profound changes with the pandemic of the New Coronavirus (COVID-19), but no studies were found that could reveal the changes caused among artisans as a result of the pandemic. Thus, descriptive exploratory research was carried out with 35 artisans residing on the Coast of Paraná. Women were the majority among the investigated group (65.7%) with an average age of 54 years old. The study revealed that in the perception of the interviewees it is possible to notice the recovery of the impacts caused by the pandemic on the family budget, with the increase in the income obtained from the sale of handicrafts, however in the opinion of the majority of the interviewees (68.57%) the recovery could have been accelerated if there were public policies for easy access to artisans. The study revealed that in Paraná Coast, after the pandemic of the New Coronavirus, there was a reduction in jobs and regional income, and it consequently affected family income and that, in the face of so many deaths, the class of widowed, black or brown women emerged in the investigated sample. The lives of these women are marked by precariousness and they feel more strongly the impacts of segregation due to the need to provide for all family needs by themselves

Comparative differential study of comorbid symptomatic groups associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) make up a diagnosis characterized by a multifunctional neurocognitive disorder, based on a limited structure to perform nodal-synaptic interrelationships between the contents of learning. Likewise, this disorder may be associated with a set of comorbid symptom groups, which, regarding their intensity, may border with ASD main diagnosis and lead to basic errors that affect subsequent social- educational treatment. This study analyses most recurrent associated comorbid groups, as well as, if the presence of symptomatic comorbid groups is differential regarding group shape: normotypical and ASD groups. A total of 390 children participated in this study, 128 belonged to normotypical group and 262 did it to experimental group, subdivided into three levels of ASD. Results found through multivariate- test indicate that the whole dimension significantly affects group way intersection, age and sex (sig: .00). The post-hoc test analysis indicates this influence was      differential regarding to the group type for the following dimensions: cognition, behaviour, psychoaffectivity, language and psychomotor disorder, while relative differences were not observed in specific- clinical dimension, where only epilepsy showed a differential result: no differences were found in general- clinic dimension. Lay abstract ASD´ diagnosis and treatment shows, to date, many weak points that need to be improved. Previous studies have shown how important is the psycho-educational component regarding ASD treatment, therefore it is necessary to understand the specific characteristics of the nuclear ASD diagnosis, in order to work out a specific therapy according to every single case.  In the current study, we examined and analysed ASD patients as well as participants showing comorbid symptoms such as epilepsy, in order to show how these comorbidities can reach a very high level, leading to a confused and wrong ASD nuclear diagnosis.  Therefore, it is essential to gain more insight into the specific diagnosis process, defining the ASD symptoms very precisely in order to develop more accurate and specific educational programs.  This study contributes to the improvement in ASD diagnosis, providing a large number of participants in order to study the relation between several comorbid symptoms and its reliability as ASD indicative factors or not

An ideal collaborative school culture in the two sub-counties should entail teacher’s collaboration, teacher’s involvements in decision-making practices, effective open communication and high teacher motivation. The current situation in Tiaty East and Tiaty West sub counties is that the area is plagued by poverty and frequent banditry, this  has made the school environment in the areas to be hostile and the safety of both the learner and the teacher is not assured. A hostile school culture of collaboration can cause the problem of poor performance to persist since there are no harmonious relations among teachers, and teachers work in isolation. As a result, the principals’ task is to create an enabling school climate towards the creation of a collaborative culture of the school. The purpose of this study was to find out influence of school principals’ leadership practices on collaborative school culture in public secondary schools in Tiaty East and Tiaty west sub-counties. The objectives of this study were : to determine influence of principals’ mentorship practices on collaborative school culture and to establish how  principals’ communication practices influence collaborative school culture. The research approach was the qualitative research and a cross-cultural study design with two cases and multiple units of analysis within each case. This study was grounded on the perspective that valuable insights about the issue of principal leadership practices and collaborative school culture can be obtained from a target population of 77 comprising of principals (1), teachers (156), support staff (276) and student leaders (328). A sample of 161 respondents; 1 principals, 31 teachers, 56 support staff and 64 student leaders was selected using purposeful sampling. The main instrument for primary data collection was use of interview schedules for principals, teachers and support staff and focus group discussion guides for student leaders. Data analysis was done using Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDA); ATLAS. Ti 9. The study found that the principals invited mentors for staff development to improve collaboration, ultimately positively impacting on student outcomes to promote a collaborative secondary school culture. Moreover, on principals communication practices, school meetings and social media especially Whatsapp groups are used to engage the school community in communication. The study concluded that principal\u27s mentorship practices, and principal\u27s communication practices are integral and symbiotic in creating a positive and collaborative school culture. On building positive collaborativecultures, the study is beneficial to future researchers in the field as they can expound more on other principals’ leadership practices and it will also contribute to existing research data. The study recommended that principals should involve teachers and other stakeholders in mentorship process in the schools. Key words: Collaboration, decision-making, motivation, mentorship, communication

Comparison of Pedagogy and Andragogy teaching methods

Pedagogy can be a highly effective approach to teaching and learning for children and young learners. The key principles of pedagogy, such as teacher-directed learning, scaffolding, and active learning, are well-suited to the developmental needs and interests of young learners. Andragogy, on the other hand, is the study of teaching adults, and it focuses on the learner as the primary source of knowledge and information. In andragogy, the learner takes responsibility for their own learning, setting their own goals and objectives, and choosing their own learning activities. This approach assumes that adults are self-directed learners, and that their life experiences are a valuable resource for learning

Evaluation of the replacement of commercial coarse aggregate by Attalea funifera Martius (Piaçava) in concrete manufacturing

In recent decades, technological advances and increased urbanization have instigated remarkable growth in the construction industry, and consequently an increase in environmental impacts both in obtaining raw materials and in the disposal of construction waste. Some studies are being carried out in Brazil for the application of natural fibers as a reinforcing element to produce concrete. According to these facts, the focus of this work is to comparatively evaluate the mechanical strength of commercial concrete with concrete produced with piaçava fiber sludge. Attalea funifera Martius, commonly known as piaçavas, is a solitary, thornless, erect, caulescent palm from the Aracaceae family. It reaches an average height of 8 to 15 meters with a stem diameter of 20 to 25 cm, having 8 to 10 leaves, each 9 meters long. Ten specimens were produced to carry out compression tests. Water, common Portland cement (CP I), sand, gravel and piassava obtained in the municipality of Barcelos-AM were used in the preparation. After curing the specimens, compression tests were carried out until the specimens ruptured. We also observed that the most resistant specimens were those produced with the addition of crushed stone, since the resistance of the specimen with crushed stone was approximately 22 MPa against 19 MPa of piaçava concrete. The main conclusions verified is that with the use of piaçava in the concrete mixture there is a drop in mechanical resistance, despite being a material that presents resistance to cracks, it does not have the same capacity as concrete with gravel as a coarse aggregate

Conceptualizing University Autonomy and Academic Freedom: Reflections on state of Autonomy and Academic Freedom in Public Universities in Kenya

There has been mixed view on the understanding and implication of the terms university autonomy and academic freedom. Different people have used the terms to imply different things, with academia looking at it as absolute freedom of universities to run their affairs. On the other hand, political leaders have taken these terms as delegated and thus needs to be exercised to enhance society’s social economic value. There is a consensus that university autonomy and academic freedom is a fundamental anchor of universities world over. Differences in conceptualization of these terms have resulted in friction between the political leaders and scholars. This paper therefore aimed at crystalizing the common bases of use and application of the terms with a view of creating a common understanding across the divide in order to reduce the tension. The paper also gives reflections on how the university autonomy and academic freedom has been perceived and applied in Kenya public universities. The debate on university autonomy and academic freedom seem to have evolved overtime and appears to have settled on a common conceptualization world over. The paper observes that, the terms university autonomy and academic freedom implies allowing universities adequate latitude to run their affairs in a way that it optimizes stakeholders’ value
