The Operational Sustainability of the Firm : The operational performance versus financial solvency binomial - OPFS
No full textThis article presents the research results that assess a firm’s operational sustainability by combining the Degree of Operating Leverage (DOL) with the Current Liquidity Ratio (CLR) to present the Operational Performance versus Financial Solvency (OPFS) binomial, using a non-parametric model. The combination of the DOL with the CLR identifies metrics that indicate that a firm operates at full installed capacity and injects synergy at the generation of financial assets. The model was tested with data from standardized financial statements from 48 firms distributed among 6 sectors of the Brazilian economy, from 2007 to 2017. The results obtained suggest that, when a firm operates at full installed capacity, the DOL varies between 1 and 2, and the CLR is higher than the DOL. From the 6 sectors contemplated by the sample, 4 stand out by operating at full installed capacity with the CLR higher than the DOL, and 2 sectors signal some idleness with the DOL above 2 and the CLR lower than the DOL, such as the Public Utilities Sector (PU) indicating the highest efficiency among all. These results are relevant to illustrate that the combination of the DOL with the CLR is robust enough to evaluate a firm’s operational sustainability
Production strategy influence on the economic viability of a family fish farm in Pará state, Amazon, Brazil
Get PDFThe objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the adoption of single-phase and two-phase system on the economic feasibility of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) family production in the Tracuateua municipality, Pará state. The operational cost methodology and economic efficiency indicators were adopted to compare these rearing systems. The annual production was 4,200 kg and 5,826 kg. The operational costs were R 34,365.00, the total operational cost was R 35,701.00, and the total operational cost per kg was R 6.13 for single-phase and two-phase systems, respectively. Regarding the indicators, the net present value was R 48,582.06, the internal rate of return was 29%, the cost-benefit ratio was 1.25, and the capital return period was 3.6 years. Despite the demand for greater investment, the two-phase system proved to be more profitable than the single-phase system, promoting even a reduction in unit production cost

In order to do this, they need to know every single child including their development potential, limitations, interests, needs, etc. The information about children in kindergarten is acquired by means of educational diagnostics throughout the whole day.
The authors intend to present a TACR project, which involves the development of an online instrument for the purposes of educational diagnostics in kindergarten. In this way, the team of investigators respond to the current needs of educational practice, where educational diagnostics appears to be a weak part of the educational process. This may have a negative effect on the effectiveness of the education process. An integral part of the development of the online tool is practical verification in through a series of partial steps. In the paper the authors present one of the areas that will be monitored in the online application—evaluation of interpersonal relationships in the context of children’s play. The concept itself is based on educational theory and educational practice and reflects the current trends in education and the requirements of educational practice

Previous theoretical studies have shown that earnings management is effectively controlled by the corporate governance system and performance. In addition, the results of previous studies found empirical evidence that there is a positive relationship between earnings management and firm value. From the theoretical discussion and previous research, it is concluded that earnings management practices have a positive effect on firm value as moderated by corporate governance
A Learning analytics for whom? A reflexion on the retrieval of learning information by the student
No full textThe present work aims at addressing how the use of Learning Analytics (LA) has enabled the retrieval of learning information by the student oneself, by analyzing data availability, self-management and student autonomy in learning processes inside and outside virtual environments. The bibliographic research conducted had a qualitative nature and consisted of a narrative literature review anchored in the theoretical foundations of information (information retrieval and representation) and Learning Analytics. Two relevant user case studies that dealt with LA were selected from the researched articles - the first analyzed the user approach in an adapted learning context with LA whereas the second analyzed the user approach in a personalized learning context with LA. One concluded that the student, as an information user, still has little access to an effective retrieval of what was consolidated throughout one’s own learning process. Besides, in relation to the effectiveness of LA, in the context of adapted and personalized learning, there was a perceived increase in student performance with regard to the use of activities and tasks
Hybrid Instruction: A Study into Usage of Lecture and Student-Centered Learning During Class Time
Get PDFWith declining confidence in higher education, it is timely to consider the optimization of students’ class time experience. This study argues that class time should be devoted to development of student innovative skill. The authors’ direct experience is blended with theory and findings from existing research to propose an innovative approach that, rather than being mutually exclusive, indicates the complementarity of lecture and student-centered pedagogies. In this hybrid format lectures provide the delivery of old and new knowledge, while the student-centered approach provides application of that information through class discussion and short, in-class assignments. The environment motivating this research is mainland China, with English Language Learner (ELL) Chinese students, with the study’s aim being their cognitive, intellectual and second language development. The objective of this hybrid approach is the development of enhanced ‘value add’ to students’ education, with a companion aim in the maintenance of tertiary institution and teaching relevance
Machine Learning and Finance: A Review using Latent Dirichlet Allocation Technique (LDA)
Get PDFThe aim of this paper is provide a first comprehensive structuring of the literature applying machine learning to finance. We use a probabilistic topic modelling approach to make sense of this diverse body of research spanning across the disciplines of finance, economics, computer sciences, and decision sciences. Through the topic modelling approach, a Latent Dirichlet Allocation Technique (LDA), we can extract the 14 coherent research topics that are the focus of the 6,148 academic articles during the years 1990-2019 analysed. We first describe and structure these topics, and then further show how the topic focus has evolved over the last two decades. Our study thus provides a structured topography for finance researchers seeking to integrate machine learning research approaches in their exploration of finance phenomena. We also showcase the benefits to finance researchers of the method of probabilistic modelling of topics for deep comprehension of a body of literature, especially when that literature has diverse multi-disciplinary actors
Corporate education: Driving aspects towards networked corporate university
Get PDFThis article aims to analyze the maturity evolution process of the stages of the corporate education system, listing the driving aspects of this process. To accomplish it, a qualitative research with a descriptive exploratory approach was carried out through an integrative review. The survey and systematic review were based on the analysis of existing scientific knowledge about "corporate education" and "evolution of the corporate education system". In the end, it is possible to list 25 driving factors for the evolution of the corporate education system to be considered by organizations that intend to reach the last stage of evolution, the Networked Corporate University (NCU), the most contemporary model proposed by the literature. In conclusion, this study brings theoretical contributions advancing on the existing theories and practices, as it can be considered that, when the Corporate Education System evolves towards the NCU stage, it will meet the context requirement that drives it to amplify the vision, beyond human capital, to social and relational capital
Availability of raw materials in the state of Piauí for the production of ceramic coating
Get PDFThe main raw material for the production of ceramic materials is clay, it can be found in large quantities throughout Brazil, in addition to having a simple processing method in the preparation of the mass of ceramic tiles using mixtures of kaolinitic clays (not very plastic) and illitic (plastic) clays, this mixture favors by developing a series of functions such as: light-burning color; act as binders and plasticizers; facilitate fluidity, due to its melting properties, provide a good burning density and excellent mechanical resistance. This work addresses the main basic white-burning raw materials used in the production of ceramic tiles: quartz, kaolin, talc and limestone and their influence on the ceramic mass. All raw materials mentioned are available in the State of Piauí. For this, a bibliographic review of a descriptive, basic and qualitative nature was carried out on the theme and with the results, it was possible to identify the existence of white-burning raw materials in the State of Piauí that can be used in the production of ceramic coating
Teachers\u27 Physical Activity: A Necessity for Stability of Schools\u27 Culture During the COVID-19 Pandemic
No full textThe recent COVID-19 outbreak has caused confusion and uncertainty to many educational organizations worldwide, forcing school leaders to weave through many school priorities. As schools take on online teaching, teachers were compelled to sit on their chairs, interacting with students using the screens for more than four hours every day. This has resulted in a decrease in physical activity, affecting their health and quality of teaching. Unfortunately, the dichotomy is as teachers care for their students\u27 physical and mental health, teachers\u27 physical well-being is not a priority in most schools\u27 culture during this pandemic.
This paper aims to address this gap in teacher\u27s lack of Physical Activity, which is necessary to help stabilize the school culture during this pandemic. It will highlight school leaders\u27 critical role in promoting physical well-being as part of the school culture. Moreover, it will discuss the benefits of teachers staying active, and it will also present possible ways to foster a culture geared toward teachers\u27 involvement in physical activities
