This research focuses on the analysis of the academic and socioeconomic factors involved in student retention. The study was conducted using a mixed approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methods, with a non-experimental design and exploratory scope. The aim was to identify the factors that have the most significant impact on the retention of students in the Bachelor\u27s Degree in Public Administration and Management at the Universidad Abierta y a Distancia de México. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied to students enrolled in the educational program. The results obtained from this survey indicated that the most significant factors contributing to student retention are external to the educational institution itself. These factors include the student\u27s motivation, expectations, work, and personal context. Additionally, the emotional state of the student has been found to have a substantial impact on their academic performance. The research concludes that in order to enhance retention rates, the University must adopt a comprehensive approach that addresses not only academic factors but also psychological and personal factors that encompass the students\u27 environment. To this end, the implementation of a comprehensive student support website has been recommended, encompassing psychological guidance to enhance motivation, augment technological skills, and facilitate effective time management. This initiative is designed to assist students in achieving a healthy balance between their academic, professional, and personal endeavors

Counter Terrorism, Sanctions and Humanitarian Access in COVID-19

This article will look at the impact of counterterrorism and sanctions measures on principled humanitarian action in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. It will also explore the daily operational challenges faced by humanitarian organizations as they carry out their work, as echoed in a growing body of research. This includes, though are not limited to, difficulties to the independent selection of beneficiaries, to carrying out bank transfers, to engagement with non-state armed groups and to the provision of healthcare to people in need in sanctioned jurisdictions. The need to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought new urgency to these issues as pre-existing constraints in parts of the world, despite joint efforts undertaken by donors, can hinder the response.  In addition to, it will discuss the need to reaffirm the fundamental importance of the humanitarian principles and to ensure that counter-terrorism measures and sanctions do not weaken adherence to them. It will seek to identify ways to ensure that such measures are consistent with Member State obligations under International Humanitarian Law, ensuring people-centered solutions and strengthening effectiveness

Enhancing Developmental Resilience in Children with Special Needs through a Strength-Based Paradigm

The purpose of this study is to examine special education teachers’ perception of the benefits of implementing a strength-based approach in special schools, and the extent to which the special needs students’ strengths, abilities, and talents are valued and addressed in the current education system. It also investigates how teachers support their students’ strengths, talents, and abilities in the current system. Findings from this study would enable a comparison of the current approach and method of working with a child with special needs in Singapore with a strength-based approach. The current approach to special education in the local schools is said to be deficit driven. Most special schools in Singapore are focused narrowly on the child’s special education needs (medical model), rather than the development of the child. Many teachers of students with special needs tend to focus on their students’ deficits rather than on their strengths (Clark, 2016). A strength-based approach in special education, on the other hand, focuses on students\u27 positive qualities and contributions instead of the skills and abilities they may not have (Elder, Rood, & Damiani, 2018; Garwood, & Ampuja, 2019).

Interculturality and Peace in the Training of English Teachers

Today\u27s society lives daily accelerated changes in all its spheres produced by information and communication technologies in a world characterized by globalization. The speed of change requires education to remain in continuous reflection to rethink and reconsider its educational work in order to respond appropriately to the new challenges and problems that society is experiencing. In coherence with the challenges caused by changes in daily life, teacher training requires internalizing the interrelation between peace and interculturality, to contribute to the search and consolidation of peace. The objective of the research was to identify and analyze research related to the training of English teachers in interculturality and peace. For this, the Scopus research platform and the Vosviewer software were used. It was found that the articles found do not recognize the importance of training teachers in interculturality and peace for the culture of democracy. It was concluded that it is important for teachers to develop professionally not only in English language proficiency but also in interculturality and education for peace. The intercultural and peace perspective is articulated with a vision of language learning that goes beyond the linguistic form and commits teachers and students to language learning committed to society in a culturally diverse world.

Supporting the Wellbeing of Children with Special Needs through Strength Based Curriculum

Singapore’s Ministry of Social and Family Development’s definition of “persons with disability” are those with physical and mental impairments, therefore resulting in reduced opportunities towards a higher quality of life in terms of education, employment, and recreation (MSF, 2023). This identification of a disability is rooted on the affliction rather than the person. Mental health approaches have traditionally followed a linear deficit approach pathway as well, with the prescription that the termination of problems would in default result in a healthy state of mental health (Torres, 2021) and past policies and efforts were made to mitigate the affliction, in the view that the quality of life will improve in the absence of mental illness or the reduction of disability. Therefore, such endeavours on rehabilitation thrusts need to be revisited and revised, to accommodate the broader context children with special needs are part of. The present literature review seeks to explore the relationship of strength-based approaches on three variables, namely, self-esteem, self-concept and self-perception and its effect on overall well-being. These two variables were selected for two reasons. The first being their centrality to theories of positive psychology and have been long explored as indictors of wellbeing and scholastic levels (Baumeister, 2003). Second, these variables seem to have good predictable validity of self-views (Swann et al., 2007)

Key lifelong competences: exploring EFL teachers’ perceptions and challenges in Greek state schools

The study aims to explore the familiarity of EFL teachers with the concept of key lifelong competences and examines their preparedness in integrating them in their classes in Greek schools. Quantitative research was carried out using a questionnaire (N=95) comprising in total 15 questions and exploring aspects such as the EFL teachers’ perceptions of the FL curriculum, their familiarity with the concept of key competences and their preparedness to integrate them in their teaching practice along with potential barriers they face and solutions in coping with them. The data from the questionnaire was processed using descriptive and inferential statistics and revealed that almost half of the teachers are aware of the term competence and to a considerable extent prepared to integrate key competences in their teaching context. The EFL teachers are adequately aware of multilingual competence and are highly prepared to integrate it in their classes, given the distinct emphasis placed on multilingualism in Greece. On the contrary, competences such as entrepreneurship, and citizenship are the least known to teachers. It should be noted that the EFL teachers identify barriers in implementing all competences which indicates that focused training on promoting a gradual complete immersion of the entire educational system in the principles of key competences should be considered
