Drop-out in Literacy and Basic Education (DRAG), Quantitative Partial Studies

    No full text
The aim of the project is to use a multi-perspective analysis to determine the individual and structural causes of drop-out in literacy and basic education and to derive possible preventative measures. In the extension phase, the focus will be on drop-outs among lecturers in literacy and basic education. The survey data (sub-study 1 and sub-study 2) from the two project phases are available for subsequent use. Quantitative sub-study 1: The data set is a standardized before-and-after survey of participants in literacy and basic education courses (AuG) in Germany. The focus is on the question of motives for participation, experiences in the course and tendencies to drop out. The survey was conducted at 14 institutions and in 26 courses. A key challenge here was to keep the instrument in appropriately “simple language” in order to ensure that the participants were able to respond. Contact with the participant sample was established via educational planners and lecturers from cooperating further education institutions. The aim of the AuG courses was to increase the basic education level of the learners. The questionnaires were presented in networking meetings with educational planners and lecturers and discussed in terms of design, wording and language. As many participants as possible in literacy and basic education courses in the participating adult education institutions were included in the survey. In order to ensure the highest possible level of participation, members of the research team went to the courses themselves and carried out the surveys. In order to avoid bias due to interviewer effects and at the same time to support the interviewees in answering the questions, it was precisely defined in advance which forms of support were permissible and which were not. Permissible forms included reading out questions and answer guidelines and allowing longer processing times. A detailed explanation of the background to the survey to the participants was mandatory (an introductory video was sent to lecturers in advance). However, further explanations of the individual questions that could influence response behavior were to be avoided. The data was transferred to SPSS and processed. Several corrections were made during data preparation. These included the correction of input errors identified by plausibility checks in order to ensure a consistent data basis. In addition, open response fields were subsequently coded where possible to enable systematic evaluation. The validity of the data was ensured by comparing it with external data sources such as the LEO study. This comparison made it possible to check the reliability of the sample and its consistency with known demographic patterns. Comprehensive anonymization measures were taken to protect the respondents in the data set. For this purpose, personal data that could enable identification was either removed or its information content was changed in such a way that it could not be traced back to the individual respondents (the name of the institution was replaced by the federal state of the institution, the course name was replaced by the course format, a code was assigned to the respondents). Quantitative sub-study 2: The study focuses on three central questions: Firstly, the nature of the supply, organizational and funding structures in which lecturers´ activities are embedded will be analysed. Secondly, it examines which working conditions influence lecturers´ decisions to remain in or leave their professional field. Thirdly, the financial, social and family conditions that promote long-term activity in this field are identified. By answering these questions, it will be possible to identify the conditions that are necessary to enable lecturers to work successfully on a long-term basis. Methodologically, the extension phase of the project is based on two approaches: a secondary analytical evaluation of existing data and targeted follow-up surveys in the field. The existing quantitative data set originates from an online survey of former and active lecturers in literacy and basic education. Demographic and work-related characteristics, job satisfaction, workload, intentions to change jobs and perceived employment prospects were recorded. The supplementary surveys are intended to deepen this data and provide further insights into the working reality of lecturers.

Vastaajilta tiedusteltiin myös, kuinka paljon he kokivat voivansa vaikuttaa elinoloihinsa eri vaalien kautta, kuinka hyvin he tunsivat hyvinvointialueisiin liittyviä asioita, ja miten he arvioivat terveydenhuollon toimivuutta eri osa-alueilla. The study charted Finnish people's values and attitudes. The themes of the Spring 2025 survey included security and preparedness for various threats, wellbeing services counties, healthcare, the economy, ideological perspectives, and freedom. First, the respondents were presented with a variety of attitudinal statements concerning, among other topics, the roles of the EU and the United States, Finland's security policy, the education system, social and healthcare services, municipal service provision, and individual responsibility and freedom. In addition, questions were asked about NATO membership, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and possible peace terms related to it, future threats and preparations for them, and the desirability of various future developments was assessed. The survey also explored the respondents' perceived influence through elections, familiarity with wellbeing services counties, and assessments of healthcare performance. Attitudes towards proposals for promoting economic growth, different economic systems and ideologies, and respondents' positions on political and value dimensions (left-right, conservative-liberal) were charted. Furthermore, the respondents evaluated the extent of freedoms in different areas of life and whether certain values and practices represented liberalism, conservatism, both, or neither. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, number of inhabitants in the municipality of residence, region (NUTS3), type of employer, working hours, type of employment contract, education, economic activity and occupational status, employment sector, trade union membership, what political party R would vote for in parliamentary elections, self-perceived social class, mother tongue, minority status and annual gross income of the R's household

Aineisto koostuu kotoutumista tukevissa sosiaalipalveluissa ja työllisyyspalveluissa työskentelevien ammattilaisten haastatteluista, joissa he pohtivat nuorten pakolaistaustaisten maahanmuuttajien ja viranomaisten välisen luottamuksen rakentumista. Haastateltavista 14 on tavoitettu Suomesta ja yhdeksän Ruotsista. Aluksi tiedusteltiin, kuinka hyvin asiakkaat tuntevat palvelujärjestelmän sekä ovatko he tietoisia asiakastapaamisten syistä. The data consists of interviews with professionals working in social services supporting integration or employment services, in which they reflect on the development of trust between young immigrants with a refugee background and the authorities. Fourteen of the interviewees were reached in Finland and nine in Sweden. First, the participants were asked how well their clients knew the service system and whether they were aware of the reasons for the client meetings. This was followed by a discussion about trust in the meetings and the young people's previous encounters with authorities. In addition, there was interest in the possible loss of trust in the meetings with clients and in the institutional trust of clients. The participants were also asked how different modes of communication, such as working with an interpreter or remote communication, affect the building of trust. Finally, they were asked to describe how they would develop the system from the perspective of trust. Background information include profession and country of residence

Kysyttiin myös kuinka oikeudenmukaisena he pitävät suomalaista yhteiskuntaa. The Citizens' Pulse surveys examine Finnish attitudes and opinions on current issues. Main themes in the surveys include the activity of authorities, future expectations, trust, and the respondents' own state of mind. This collection round also included questions on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, preparedness for incidents and crises, living in a rural, urban or archipelago area, and issues that the Finnish government should address. The tenth collection round of 2024 surveyed the respondents' trust in other people and various institutions (e.g. the Finnish Government, the health care system, the media, and the Finnish Defence Forces). The respondents were asked to evaluate how fair or unfair they thought Finnish society was at present, and their state of mind was examined with questions on various matters relating to health, well-being, and their situation in life. The questions covered, for example, the respondents' own mental well-being, whether they were worried about the adequacy of their income, their confidence in their future, experiences of stress and togetherness, and whether they felt their lives were meaningful and safe. Additionally, the respondents were asked to evaluate whether an atmosphere of crisis prevailed amongst Finns, whether they were worried about the state of general government finances (state and municipalities) and whether Finland's NATO membership had impacted their sense of safety. The respondents' views were investigated on which societal issues (e.g. promotion of climate action, national defence, poverty reduction, effective healthcare, operating conditions of businesses and investment opportunities) the Finnish government should focus on in the near future. The next set of questions focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and national security in Finland. The respondents were asked how concerned they were about the crisis in Ukraine and its effects, and whether they were concerned that the war might expand beyond Ukraine. The respondents were also asked whether they were concerned that Russia might take military action against Finland or try to interfere with the functioning of Finnish society. Opinions on the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU and whether Finland should be ready to receive significant numbers of refugees from Ukraine if necessary were charted. The respondents were asked whether the new 'Preparing for incidents and crises' guide by Ministry of the Interior, was familiar and how the preparedness guidelines for the whole population affect the respondents' sense of safety. Finally, questions were asked about living in different areas of Finland and the attractiveness of different areas. The respondents were queried about their preferred place of residence and how long they had lived in the countryside, town and archipelago. Background variables included the language responded in, the respondent's gender, age group, NUTS3 region of residence, highest level of education, household composition, and perceived financial situation of household

    Lasten kuritusväkivalta 2025

    No full text
Aineisto jatkaa Lastensuojelun keskusliiton tekemää lapsiin kohdistuvan kuritusväkivallan ja siihen liittyvien asenteiden kehitystä seuraavaa tutkimusta. Kyselyllä kartoitettiin myös vanhempien itse raportoimaa kuritusväkivallan käyttämistä. Aineistokeruusta vastasi Taloustutkimus Oy. Ensimmäisenä kyselyllä selvitettiin suomalaisten mielipiteitä kuritusväkivallan fyysisten ja henkisten muotojen käyttämisen hyväksyttävyydestä. Vastaajilta kysyttiin muun muassa onko lapsen ja vanhemman välisiä ristiriitoja ainakin poikkeustapauksessa oikeutettua ratkoa kohtuullisella väkivallalla ja onko lapsen huonoon käytökseen oikeutettua puuttua huutamalla. Seuraavaksi niiltä vastaajilta, joilla oli alaikäisiä lapsia, kysyttiin ovatko he kohdistaneet lapsiinsa kuritusväkivaltaa, kuten esimerkiksi tukistaneet tai uhkailleet lapsiaan väkivallalla. Lisäksi kaikilta vastaajilta tiedusteltiin, onko heihin kohdistettu lapsuudessaan kuritusväkivaltaa ja tietävätkö vastaajat kuritusväkivallan olevan laitonta Suomessa. Lopuksi kaikilta vastaajilta kysyttiin kuinka haitallisena lapsen kehitykselle he pitävät erilaisia keinoja puuttua lapsen käytökseen, kuten esimerkiksi piiskaamista, huomiotta jättämistä ja lapsen määrämistä yksin rauhoittumaan. Aineiston taustamuuttujia ovat sukupuoli, ikäryhmä, maakunta, suuralue, kunnan asukasmäärä, kotitalouden koko, kotona asuvien lasten ikä ja lukumäärä, ammattiasema, siviilisääty, työllisyystilanne, paikkakuntatyyppi ja sukupolvi. The dataset continues the research conducted by the Central Union for Child Welfare on the development of corporal punishment of children and attitudes towards it. The survey also maps the use of corporal punishment reported by parents themselves. Taloustutkimus was responsible for the data collection. The survey first explored Finnish people's opinions on the acceptability of using physical and psychological forms of corporal punishment. For example the respondents were asked whether it is justifiable to resolve conflicts between a child and a parent with moderate violence in exceptional cases, and whether it is acceptable to address a child's misbehavior by yelling. Next, the respondents who had underage children were asked whether they had used corporal punishment on their children, such as pulling their hair or threatening them with violence. Additionally, all the respondents were asked whether they had been subjected to corporal punishment during their own childhood and whether they were aware that corporal punishment is illegal in Finland. Finally, all the respondents were asked to evaluate how harmful they consider different methods of addressing a child's behavior in terms of the child's development, such as spanking, ignoring the child, or sending the child to calm down alone. The background variables of the dataset include gender, age group, region, major regions, municipality population size, household composition, age and number of children living at home, occupational status, marital status, employment situation, type of locality, and generation

The content of the Finnish Working Life Barometers has remained largely unchanged over the years. The 2024 survey began by asking respondents about the number of employees at their workplace and presented statements about the working atmosphere, openness, and fairness at the workplace. This was followed by statements related to maintaining work ability, asking, for example, whether the workplace promotes skills development and a safe working environment and whether the employer supports employees' physical activity. The survey also examined employees' opportunities for training and learning new skills. Next, questions were asked about flexible working hours, remote work, and wages. In addition, autonomy at work was surveyed by asking about employee's ability to influence on, for example, work tasks, work distribution, work pace, place of work, or workplace development. After that, they asked about the use of digital tools, such as social media, various instant messaging apps, and AI-based tools. The survey also examined whether respondents experienced unequal treatment, discrimination, or emotional abuse at work due to factors such as ethnic background, gender, or age. Respondents were also asked about experiences of physical violence and sexual harassment. Feelings related to work ability and work, such as stress, exhaustion, enthusiasm, meaningfulness, and community spirit, were also surveyed. Finally, questions were asked about possible changes in the respondents' work and whether they belonged to a trade union or unemployment fund. Background variables included, among others, gender, age, status in employment, employer type, industry of employment, type of contract and weekly working hours
