The third wave of the Irish Eurostudent survey was conducted by the research team at the UCD Geary Institute, in conjunction with the Higher Education Authority and the RAND Corporation (Santa Monica): during winter 2006 and spring 2007. The target of the survey was the student population in 35 Irish higher education institutions (at both undergraduate and postgraduate level), with 31 institutions taking part. The third wave of the Irish Eurostudent used an internet approach involving a web-survey and the distribution of institutional email messages to students. Previous surveys were based on the distribution of postal questionnaires to a preselected sample of students. The response rate achieved in Eurostudent III was 8%; representing 13,342 students. Although the response rate for Eurostudent III was low, the total number of responses exceeded that of the previous two surveys

European Union Survey of Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), 2016

    No full text
The Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) in Ireland is a household survey covering a broad range of issues in relation to income and living conditions. It is the official source of data on household and individual income and also provides a number of key national poverty indicators, such as the ‘at risk of poverty’ rate, the consistent poverty rate and rates of enforced deprivation. The primary focus of the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) is the collection of information on the income and living conditions of different types of households in Ireland, in order to derive indicators on poverty, deprivation and social exclusion. It is a voluntary survey of private households. The SILC Anonymised Microdata File (AMF) contains both personal and household level data. Household data is at present duplicated for each member of the household. If performing household level analysis, please be aware of this and subset the data to include a single entry per household (interview_hh = 1). Please note: In 2020 AMF was revised to be more in line with the SILC RMF. Variables were renamed in accordance with Eurostats Doc65, which provides methodological guidelines and description of EU-SILC target variables. The target variables within the AMF are data on household and individual income as well as a number of key national poverty indicators, therefore variables identified as being not relevant to SILC were removed from the AMF. Furthermore, additional statistical disclosure controls were also implemented in the revisions so as to adhere to updates of the Legislation, Governance & Data Policies of the CSO. Please note: SILC AMF data is cross-sectional microdata in which household and/or individuals cannot be tracked over time. The household id variables in each cross sectional file are randomly generated and cannot be linked between yearly datasets

Seuraavaksi kartoitettiin koulutukseen hakeutumista. The Vocational School Student Survey (VET Student Survey) 2022 is a total study charting experiences of young people studying in Finnish vocational education institutions. The survey was conducted by the Research Foundation for Studies and Education (Otus) in collaboration with the National Union of Vocational Students in Finland (SAKKI), which also funded the study with funding received from the Ministry of Education and Culture. Main themes of the survey included applying for studies, experiences relating to studies and teaching, financial circumstances, plans for the future and working life, and wellbeing and leisure time. First, the respondents were asked about their studies at present with questions concerning, for instance, their field of education and how they financed their living costs during studies. Questions also surveyed how the respondents had entered their studies and whether they had began their studies straight away in the autumn after completing comprehensive school. The respondents' decision to apply for vocational studies was further examined with questions regarding, for instance, whether vocational studies had been discussed or recommended in their families or at school, and how clear the decision to opt for vocational studies had been. The respondents were also asked how they had performed in earlier education. The respondents' experiences of studies and teaching were examined with questions about the time spent on studies in a week, form and sufficiency of the teaching and guidance received, balancing and managing studies, and the atmosphere of their school and study community. Further questions focused on the respondents' opinions on the personalisation of studies and competence-based studying, including, for instance, whether they thought they were able to influence what and how they studied and whether their career plans had been taken into account in their study plan. Opinions were also charted regarding on-the-job learning. Possible learning difficulties and support received for these difficulties were surveyed next. With regard to study progress, satisfaction with studies and the institution itself was charted as well as feelings of studying the right field, prospects of graduating and things slowing down study progress. Working, housing and financial circumstances were investigated by asking about working during studies and in the summer, housing during the semesters, financial help from parents and relatives, and sufficiency of money for expenses. Concerning occupational life, opinions were probed on a number of statements about employment as well as employment prospects after graduation, and views on the importance of various things for a successful career. Future plans to study were surveyed. Well-being and leisure time were examined with questions about friends, social relationships, bullying and discrimination, sleep, hobbies, and Internet and social media use. Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, and mother tongue. The time the respondent had lived in Finland was further charted, along with languages spoken with parents, and parents' employment status and education level

This project develops a novel procedure for proxying economic activity with daytime satellite imagery across time periods and spatial units, for which reliable data on economic activity are otherwise not available. In developing this unique proxy, we apply machine-learning techniques to a historical time series of daytime satellite imagery from the Landsat program dating back to 1984. Compared to satellite data on night light intensity, another common economic proxy, our proxy more precisely predicts economic activity at smaller regional levels and over longer time horizons. Our procedure is generalizable to any region in the world, and it has great potential for analyzing historical economic developments, evaluating local policy reforms, and controlling for economic activity at highly disaggregated regional levels in econometric applications. Therefore, we produce our proxy for any region in the world and publish the data as georeferend TIF files in this repository. In our paper, we demonstrate our measure’s usefulness for the example of Germany, where East German data on economic activity are unavailable for detailed regional levels and historical time series
