    Clinical presentation and treatment of multifocal epitrichial sweat gland carcinoma in a horse

    Epitrichial gland carcinoma is a very rare type of skin tumour in horses. This report describes a horse presenting multiple nodules with associated normal, alopecic and ulcerated skin diagnosed via histopathology as epitrichial gland carcinoma. Treatment consisted of combined surgical excision, topical therapy for ulcerated nodules and cryotherapy for non-ulcerated tumours. Six months following therapy, the excised masses had not regrown and only 10 out of 25 small tumours previously treated with cryotherapy were noticeable

    Andrological characterisation of Chilean purebred stallions

    Chilean purebred horses are widely used in Chile for rodeo and farm work. Despite the importance of the breed, systematic studies characterising their andrological variables are lacking, making stallion evaluation and selection difficult. This study aimed to determine whether age and seasonality affect seminal, spermatic, gonadal and endocrine variables of 15 Chilean purebred stallions. The animals were studied over a year and were separated into a young group (n=6) (5 to 12 years) and an aged group (n=9) (13 to 25 years). The variables evaluated were: total seminal volume (mL), free gel seminal volume (mL), sperm concentration(106 x spermatozoa/mL using Spermacue refractometer TM), sperm progressive motility (conventional microscopy (%)), sperm vitality (Eosine-Nigrosine stain (%)) and sperm morphology (Hematoxylin Eosin stain (%)), testicle volume (cm3) (ultrasound Weld 3000V, 5MHz), plasmatic testosterone (ng/mL) and estrogen (pg/mL) concentration determined by radioimmunoassay. To determine the statistical difference and correlation between variables, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation were used, respectively (P<0.05). Most of the andrological variables were affected by age and season and although not significant, the values obtained were higher in young stallions during summer. Progressive motility (70 ± 12.1 %), sperm normal morphology (90 ± 1.7 %) and plasmatic estrogen (6.49 ± 1.8 pg/mL) reached statistical significance to plasmatic testosterone (0.3 ± 0.08 ng/mL) (P=0.01), sperm concentration (253 ± 59.5 x 106 sperm/mL) (P=0.03) and testicular volume (463.4 ± 90 cm3) (P=0.002) variables. Despite the results, we suggest that all these variables should be considered during stallion selection since andrological variables were neither correlated with testosterone nor the oestrogen plasmatic concentration. The results provide parameters that should be considered during the evaluation and selection of Chilean purebred stallions to avoid the extrapolation of data from other breeds

    Estimation of genetic parameters for milk yield using a random regression test-day model in first parity dairy cows under pasture-based systems of Los Ríos region in Chile

    In dairy cattle, genetic selection for milk yield was generally based on 305 days lactation records that were calculated from available monthly test-day milk yield records. A test-day milk yield record, multiplied by the number of days between the current and following test-day, was the monthly milk yield and summed to all other monthly milk yields represented a 305 days lactation yield. Cows that for any reason did not complete their lactation got a 305 days yield via correction factors assuming a common lactation curve. Random regression models allow individual deviation from a common curve. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for daily milk yield using a random regression model (RRM) in Chilean dairy cows. A data set containing 97,683 monthly test-day records of 10,528 cows from 15 commercial dairy herds of Los Ríos Region in southern Chile was used. Days in milk (DIM) were modelled using the fourth-order Legendre polynomials and the model also included, as fixed effects, contemporary group and cow age at test-day as a covariate. The average daily milk yield was 17.83 ± 5.25 kg. Average estimated heritability and repeatability from five to 305 DIM was 0.26 ± 0.02 and 0.61 ± 0.04, respectively. The heritability estimate varied from 0.23 to 0.31. Both parameters did not vary dramatically except after 270 DIM when repeatability increased while heritability decreased. Although the estimated genetic parameters did not seriously depart from the most recent results available in the Chilean literature, they are mathematically more precise for estimating the true parameters than those calculated using adjustment factors, suggesting that the model used could be the starting point to develop a genetic evaluation system for dairy cattle in Chile

    Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection in the endangered huemul deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus) in Patagonia

    In a huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) population sympatric with cattle, we found evidence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection. Three huemul faecal pellet samples and two cows pats were collected and cultured for MAP presence. DNA was then extracted for PCR analysis of all signal-positive cultures. To assess whether MAP isolates obtained from huemul faeces were associated with typical MAP isolated from livestock, positive confirmed culture samples were sub-typed using a combination of five Mycobacterial Interspersed Repetitive Unit-Variable Number Tandem Repeat Analysis and one Short Sequence Repeat analysis markers. All faecal samples from both species were MAP positive. One huemul presented a different bacteria profile genotype not described before, suggesting that huemul and cattle in Patagonia could carry a unique MAP strain

    Serum biomarkers of endothelial glycocalyx injury in canine parvoviral infection

    Canine parvoviral enteritis (PVE) is one of the most common diseases in young dogs. A range of diseases and inflammatory conditions can cause endothelial glycocalyx (eGCX) disruption, therefore, this study aimed to determine the presence of eGCX damage in dogs with PVE using serum biomarkers of eGCX, and to evaluate their prognostic importance among survivor and non-survivor dogs. Twenty dogs diagnosed with PVE and 10 healthy dogs of both sexes, mixed-breed, and under 6 months of age were included in the study. Clinical examination, blood gas analysis, and complete blood cell counts of the dogs were performed. To detect the eGCX injury, serum endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (ESM-1), syndecan-1 (SDC-1), angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), and heparan sulfate (HS) levels were measured. Results showed that at the time of admission serum levels of ESM-1 were higher in dogs with PVE compared to that of the healthy dogs. Dogs with PVE were further assigned into two groups: survivors (n:10) and non-survivors (n:10). The ESM-1 had high sensitivity and specificity to differentiate between survivor and non-survivor dogs with values of 100% and 67%, respectively, with at an optimum cut-off point of ≥460 pg/mL. We concluded that higher levels of ESM-1 in dogs with PVE may indicate eGCX injury when compared to healthy dogs. Also, the high levels of serum ESM-1 in non-survivor dogs suggest that serum ESM-1 may carry some prognostic usefulness for predicting mortality in dogs with PVE

    Rumen fermentation and diet degradability in sheep fed sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) silage supplemented with Tithonia diversifolia or alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and rice polishing

    The objective of this study was to evaluate ruminal fermentation (i.e. pH, ammonia, and volatile fatty acid concentrations) and in situ degradability of diets in sheep fed sugarcane silage (SCS) supplemented with Tithonia diversifolia (Td) or alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay (A), with or without rice (Oriza sativa) polishing (RP) as an energy source. Four Blackbelly sheep (35 kg average body weight) with rumen cannula were used. The experimental diets were (g/kg of dry matter): Diet 1) SCS (686) + Td (294), Diet 2) SCS (460) + Td (226) + RP (294), Diet 3) SCS (637) + A (343), and Diet 4) SCS (441) + A (245) + RP (294). The remainder (20 g/kg of dry matter) was composed by minerals supplement and salt. Samples of diets were incubated into rumen for 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 30, 36, 48, and 72 h to determine in situ degradability. Data were analysed with a linear mixed model. The lamb, period and lamb nested in period*diet were considered as a random variable. The inclusion of RP improved the degradability of diets and ammonia production in the rumen. The acetic, propionic, and butyric acid concentrations (mmol/100 mL) in rumen increased (P<0.03) when diets with alfalfa and RP were provided. The degradability of diets based on sugarcane silage supplemented with either alfalfa or Tithonia diversifolia was improved (P<0.05) with the rice polishing inclusion, with no difference (P>0.05) between these forages. In conclusion, energy supplementation, not necessarily from starch, is important to improve rumen fermentation and degradability of diets based on sugarcane silage

    First report of molecular detection of Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 (former CnMV: Canine Minute Virus) in Chilean domestic dogs

    Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 (CnMV) infects dogs worldwide and can be responsible for different clinical signs in neonates and bitches during gestation. There is a limited number of CnMV sequences available in the NCBI database, so far. The present preliminary study aimed to obtain evidence of CnMV infection status among domestic dogs in Chile and evaluate the genetic relatedness of the sequences obtained with any type of bocaparvovirus already reported. Two partial nucleotide sequences of the VP2 coding gene were obtained from forty blood samples and compared with 23 available sequences of Carnivore bocaparvovirus from 1 to 6. Chilean sequences grouped within Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 group, being sequence 5434 (Accession number, MH544475) more similar to the Japanese strain HM-6 and sequence 5423 (Accession number, MH544476) to the Chinese strain SH1

    Variability of cranial morphometrical traits in Suffolk Down Sheep

    The widespread use of measures and indices associated with the head for racial analysis suggests that such measures have a strong relationship with the underlying bone structure. Few studies analyse the variability of the bones of the head and the relationship with their external expression. The objective of this work was to identify and measure the magnitudes of the main skull parameters in Suffolk Down adult sheep. This study was carried out on sixteen adult Suffolk Down sheep skulls at INIA Butalcura. Their skeletons were obtained and digital morphometry was performed. Each skull was photographed from dorsal, ventral, lateral and nuchal views with a total of 28 parameters evaluated (10 dorsal, 5 ventral, 6 lateral and 6 nape). The results indicate that the externally observable variability in the cranial zone of a sheep cannot be extrapolated to the rest of the bony components of the cranial zone, either in length, width or height. It was observed that the variability of a cephalic dimension can be contrasted with the variability of individual bones that participate in a certain dimension as part of a plasticity adjustment mechanism independent of the genetic variability of each bone separately. The cranial dimensions are still useful in defining the productive potential of a sheep population; however, they should be taken cautiously for racial definitions, where the individual variability of the bones could be a better reflection of the genetic structure of the population and the dimensionality could be biased by adaptive plasticity

    Serological survey of bovine viral diarrhea (BVDV-1), brucellosis, and leptospirosis in captive white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari) from the Midwest region in Brazil

    The present study was conducted to assess the occurrence of anti-Brucella sp., anti-BVDV-1, and anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies from captive white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari). A cross-sectional survey was performed testing 100 serum samples collected in a commercial breeding herd. All samples were submitted to the acidified antigen test (AAT), virus neutralization test (VNT) and microscopic agglutination test (MAT) with live antigens. None of the samples tested agglutinated in the AAT screening test. In the VNT, 28 samples presented a cytotoxic effect and were excluded from the evaluation. For BVDV-1, only one sample (1/72; 1.38%) was positive, with antibody titers of 40. For leptospirosis, 9% (9/100) of the samples reacted to at least one of the 24 serovars tested, with 8% (8/100) positive for serovar Patoc and 1% (1/100) for serovar Grippotyphosa. The maximum titer observed was 100. The identification of antibodies against the serovars Patoc and Grippotyphosa suggests that the sampled individuals have been exposed to the pathogen at some point during their lifetime. Regarding BVDV-1, this may be the first serological survey to describe seropositive samples in tayassuids

    Water bucket colour preferences in horses

    There is a general agreement that horses have dichromatic colour vision with similar capabilities to those of human beings with red-green colour deficiencies. However, whether colour perception has an impact on equine preference for drinking water and how pronounced the colour stimulus might be for horses is still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the preference of horses for different coloured buckets (red, light green, yellow, green, light blue, turquoise) with different tones, in terms of lightness and darkness, measured by the amount of water consumed from each of them in an outdoor arena. Three Thoroughbred and 3 Haflinger horses were used in the study, and data were collected between 09:00 - 16:00 h. The results showed that the average water consumption during this period can reach up to 25.74 L (at an average environmental temperature of 27.35 °C), and significantly more water had been consumed from the turquoise-coloured bucket than from the other colours. It was also observed that the light toned colours (turquoise, light blue) were preferred to dark ones (green, yellow, red). It is suggested to use water buckets that are turquoise and light blue. Further studies are needed to better understand the relationship between water consumption and colour vision
