    Interaction Analysis of Repeated Measure Data

    Extensive penalized variable selection methods have been developed in the past two decades for analyzing high dimensional omics data, such as gene expressions, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), copy number variations (CNVs) and others. However, lipidomics data have been rarely investigated by using high dimensional variable selection methods. This package incorporates our recently developed penalization procedures to conduct interaction analysis for high dimensional lipidomics data with repeated measurements. The core module of this package is developed in C++. The development of this software package and the associated statistical methods have been partially supported by an Innovative Research Award from Johnson Cancer Research Center, Kansas State University

    Taking a Chinese agricultural company public in the United States: The case of Yongye

    Master of AgribusinessDepartment of Agricultural EconomicsVincent Amanor BoaduThe problem of interest in this research is providing insights into the difficulty perceived by Americans that foreign agricultural companies have little chance raising capital on Wall Street. The thesis narrates the path used by one Chinese firm to raise capital on the US stock market. The story is even more remarkable because Yongye is a Chinese company, unknown and inexperienced in the world of initial public offerings (IPO), yet made a bold entry into the US financial markets. The thesis tells that story from the author’s vantage point as a vice president in Yongye, and from the front row seat of all the negotiations leading to the successful IPO. The story focuses on the author’s personal experience working in Yongye as it sought to finance the company’s growth to support is vision to increase the prosperity of Chinese smallholder farmers. The company executes this vision within the context of China’s industrial expansion as well as its institutional structures. It also presents the product and technology which were the products that Yongye offered to the market. Yongye’s success in raising private and public funds in the US market from 2008 to 2010, came after overcoming many internal structural obstacles, and “lumpy” developments which existed in China’s agriculture sector. On a macro level, it is also juxtaposed against a planned economy driven forward by successive Five-Year Plans implemented by the communist government starting in 1953 and acceptance of the UN’s Millennial Development Goals implemented from 2000 to 2015. On a micro level, Chinese smallholder farmers found Yongye’s specialty fertilizer a compelling value as it helped them increase crop production and sell at higher prices which were in direct opposition to trends which saw arable land shrinking and becoming less productive due to over utilization. Ultimately, this story weaves together the description of how a SME agribusiness in China, through local entrepreneurship and foreign business expertise, was able to overcome major structural obstacles in China, and attract enough interest from foreign investors to finance its business and achieve company, national and UN goals. It provides insights into how small to medium size companies in any developing country, with the right product, a clear vision, and the tenacity of its leaders can procure the requisite financial resources to fund its growth. After all, capitalism is about opportunity to expand capital. Politics is only relevant if it becomes a barrier to the process of capitalism meeting its reason for existence

    The impact of replacing breakfast grains with meat/meat alternatives: an evaluation of child nutrition policy

    Objective: To evaluate the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) rule that allows a meat/meat alternative to replace the breakfast grain requirement three times per week. Design: A 5-week menu including breakfast, lunch and snack was developed with meat/meat alternative replacing the breakfast grain requirement three times per week. Menu nutrients based on the minimum requirements were compared with reference values representing the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for fat and a range of reference values representing two-thirds the Dietary Reference Intake for 3-year-olds and 4–5-year-olds. The meal pattern minimum requirements were compared with two-thirds of those recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). Setting: Evaluation took place between April and June 2019. Participants: Human subjects were not utilized. Results: The CACFP minimum grain requirement is well below the DGA reference value (0·5–1·5 v. 3·33 ounce-equivalents). Energy (2208·52 kJ) was below the reference values (3126·83–4362·53 kJ). Protein (34·43 g) was above the reference values (9·87–10·81 g). Carbohydrate (76·65 g), fibre (7·46 g) and vitamin E (1·69 mg) were below their reference values of 86·67 g, 10·46–14·60 g and 4–4·76 mg, respectively. Fat (22·57 %) was below the reference range (25–40 %). Conclusions: The CACFP rule which allows a meat/meat alternative to replace the breakfast grain requirement three times per week may result in meal patterns low in energy, carbohydrate, fat, fibre and vitamin E, while providing an excessive amount of protein

    Cultivating K-12 Student Interest in STEM

    Tuan NguyenIn recent years, there has been a tremendous push for teachers to emphasize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, in all K-12 classes. Teachers play a critical role in student interest and mindset towards STEM fields. This paper examines some of the research related to STEM education in the United States, math anxiety, growth mindset, and the teacher’s role in student interest in STEM. The subsequent study focuses on the teacher role and teaching practices that may encourage or deter students from STEM. It surveys college students between the ages of 17 and 22 about their current STEM interest as well as K-12 experiences with various STEM activities. The study will be conducted through an online survey, and it aims to provide a description of teacher influence on interest in STEM within their students

Mike FinneganLEAD 212: Introduction to Leadership Concepts, is the first course associated with the popular Leadership Studies minor held in the Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University. As a program built around the leadership premise that leadership is a relationship, in-person courses emphasize student engagement amongst each other and with instructors. The COVID-19 pandemic forced courses initially held in-person to be shifted to online platforms only, creating significant challenges. A literature review exploring the importance of teacher-student relationships in higher education, online learning in higher education, and a glimpse into emerging literature on the effects of education caused by COVID-19 share information that be influential in future adaptations of online courses. Studies exposing the need for educators to provide extensive personal and academic care and strategies for approachability connected closely with the positive impact that both learning communities and peer mentors can have on student satisfaction (Denzine & Pulos 2000) (Hurd & Stein 2004) (Kuh et al. 2008). Online platforms are increasingly important in creating space for social engagement in online courses, as well as the various roles that instructors must take on (Salmon 2000). Additionally, personal accounts based on experience as a class leader for the spring 2020 LEAD 212 create a foundation for supplemental material to provide future class leaders in preparation for another semester of online leadership curriculum

    Intermolecular Coulombic Decay in Endohedral Fullerene at the 4d→4f Resonance

    Intermolecular processes offer unique decay mechanisms for complex systems to internally relax. Here, we report the observation of an intermolecular Coulombic decay channel in an endohedral fullerene, a holmium nitride complex (Ho3N) embedded within a C80 fullerene, between neighboring holmium ions, and between the holmium complex and the carbon cage. By measuring the ions and the electrons in coincidence after XUV photoabsorption, we can isolate the different decay channels, which are found to be more prevalent relative to intra-atomic Auger decay

    A Structured Cleaving Mesh for Bioheat Transfer Application

    The human body executes a complex control scheme in an attempt to maintain a constant core temperature. The hypothalamus acts as a thermostat that receives input signals from different parts of the body and responds with different control mechanisms to regulate heat exchange and create a homeothermic core. This entire process of receiving input signals and providing feedback response is called the human thermoregulation mechanism. Thermophysiological models such as the Fiala model [1], [2] are used to simulate this process to understand the response of the human body to its thermal surroundings. The Fiala and other models used in thermophysiological and human thermal comfort studies rely on stylized phantoms [3]. A parallel branch of research that deals with biomedical applications [4] and radiation dosimetry [5]–[6][7] makes use of computational human phantoms (CHPs). CHPs initially consisted of stylized phantoms, which were made using simple geometrical objects. With advancements in technology and available resources, the stylized phantoms were largely replaced by voxel phantoms and later by a family of hybrid phantoms. Voxel phantoms are generated from medical imaging data and provide a detailed and accurate representation of human anatomy. Hybrid phantoms are constructed using non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surfaces and polygon mesh elements that provide a smooth surface for organs and the entire human body. Voxel phantoms present the challenge of a stair-step effect on curved surfaces, especially for smaller organs like eye balls, due to the voxel shape [4]. Tetrahedral mesh-based (TM-based) CHPs are used as a solution to overcome the challenges of hybrid and voxel phantoms [4], [8]. The present study focuses on using a structured form of the cleaving mesh to (1) generate a simulation domain directly from medical imaging data of the patient and (2) perform heat-transfer simulations using this domain. This method makes generation of a mesh from medical imaging data straightforward, without any need for conversion to other phantom surface representations [4], [8]. The remainder of the paper is organized into sections that outline the proposed methodology and its significance. Section II provides a short review of models used in human thermophysiological research. Challenges associated with use of these models point to the need for a model that is based on accurate representation of human anatomy
