Field-Level Land-Use Adaptation to Local Weather Trends
The intersection of agriculture and climate has been well researched for at least the last couple of decades. Largely, the motivation for previous research has been the potential impact on food security for the world's (growing) population. Many studies have predicted unfavorable yield scenarios for some geographic regions. As a result, another common research theme is farmer adaptation to a changing climate. Typically, these studies are concerned with what farmers could or should do to adapt to adverse outcomes. However, research examining whether farmers respond to weather patterns has largely been ignored. Answering this question can help provide more accurate food security analyses: if farmers do respond to changing patterns through cropping decisions, for instance, the global food supply outcome will be different than a world in which they do not respond. This article aims to provide insights into what and how farmers' cropping decisions respond to weather patterns. The study region is a set of eleven Kansas counties. The article provides an important step toward more credible estimates of global food supplies under changing climates and the methods themselves translate to other areas. Results suggest that land-use responses to changing weather patterns will vary across time and space
Financial strain and worry about retirement income adequacy

MacDonaldWorry about running out of money in retirement (hereinafter referred to as retirement worry) is Americans’ number one financial worry since 2001 (Gallup, 2018a, 2018b, 2019). Increasing frequency and intensity of worry is associated with negative psychological outcomes and impaired cognitive functioning. The overall aim of the present study was to advance the conceptual and empirical understanding of retirement worry. Drawing from worry and stress literature, and theoretically grounded in the Tallis and Eysenck (1994) worry model, the present study utilized partial proportional-odds cumulative logit models and positioned financial strain, financial resources, personal resources, coping strategies (i.e., calculating retirement savings and foregoing medical care), and “coping strategy × financial strain” interactions as key variables in understanding the psychological mechanisms behind retirement worry. Cross-sectional data consisted of survey responses from a nationally representative sample of 13,919 non-retired adults, aged 18 to 64 drawn from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study State-by-State survey.
The results surprisingly indicated that financial resources were positively associated with retirement worry while personal resources were negatively associated with retirement worry. Coping strategies had significant but mixed associations with retirement worry. Specifically, calculating retirement savings was negatively associated with retirement worry while foregoing medical care was positively associated with retirement worry. The results underscored the moderating role of coping strategies in the retirement worry process. First, calculating retirement savings exacerbated the effects of financial strain on retirement worry at higher levels of financial strain and mitigated the effects of financial strain on retirement worry at lower levels of financial strain. Second, foregoing medical care exacerbated the effects of financial strain on retirement worry at all levels of financial strain. The conceptual model for retirement worry developed was largely supported which helps to advance the conceptual and empirical understanding of retirement worry. Results from the present study contribute to the literature on retirement worry and financial well-being and should be of interest to policymakers, financial and mental health professionals, companies, and other researchers
Past and present streams in international hospitality research
According to definition, modern hospitality management could be defined as classified business management based on six multidimensional core industry like restaurants, hotels, travel, attractions, conventions, and leisure with its constituent and relevant interdependent relationships. In this chapter, we reviewed the growth of international hospitality management, and the new emerged managerial challenges related to the research of international hospitality management. We also provided a brief review of history and summarized the current findings from empirical research related to research methodology and managerial problems. Nevertheless, this chapter serves as a brief introduction to the background, history, and challenges currently facing international hospitality management. This chapter will help guide readers to the relevant background and research topics about to come in the later chapters of this book. With an increased understanding of the multi-national business behavior, future hospitality managers will find the knowledge to embrace in an increasing difficult challenge and find scientific solutions in a complexing political, diversified social-cultural and legal systems

The Effects of Childhood Separation: A Study on Mental Health
Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award - Group category, grand prizeJung Sim JunThis study examines the impact of child separation at the US/Mexico border.Since 2016, immigration has been a large part of the republican policy platform and has led to policies like ending DACA and the “zero tolerance” policy, researched here. This research will study the trauma responses of migrant children who were separated at the border as well as the trauma responses of parents who have had their children taken from them by US border agents. It is important to know how a country’s immigration policy affects those it targets and include data about mental health in those discussions. Our study contributes to that data. Participants will be examined via a mixed-method trauma questionnaire and an in-person interview. This data will then be compared to the surveyed“control group” made up of immigrant families in similar detention centers that are still intact. This is done to limit extraneous variables. We expect to find that separation intensifies trauma associated with migrant detainment in both parents and children. This knowledge will fortify the advocacy for the well-being of immigrants in hopes of ending family separation and the “zero tolerance” policy at large. Findings can be used to hold lawmakers accountable for their actions and contribute to the discussion on immigration on a global level

Hypersonic Boundary Layer Turbulence
Kevin WanklynHypersonic flow involves an extremely complex flow system. The parameters that affect laminar to turbulent flow, especially at hypersonic speeds, play a large role in developing accurate predictions of drag and heating. Transition from laminar to turbulent flow involves a multifaceted scheme consisting of a variety of mechanisms. The study of these conditions has yielded a reliable understanding of their role pertaining to planar bodies or axisymmetric shapes. The Boundary Layer Transition (BOLT1) flight experiment was developed to stimulate the advancement of transition predictions and assess experimental capabilities by introducing a more geometrically complex surface. The new geometry includes a concave surface; however, its most prominent features are the leading edges. BOLT is a collaborative effort spanning multiple organizations whose purpose is to establish new flow predictions and collect experimental data for the complex surface. This project includes the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Purdue University, Texas A&M University (TAMU), University of Minnesota, John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JUAPL), and NASA-Langley. Hypersonic flow measurements for BOLT1 were taken by utilizing the advanced wind tunnel facilities housed at TAMU, NASA, and Purdue. Each facility tested the scale model and data was collected and compared to the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and predictions performed by Minnesota and TAMU. The new studies conducted are on Boundary Layer Turbulence (BOLT2). BOLT2 is an extended geometry of BOLT1 and focuses more on the effects of turbulent flow on the model. BOLT2 IR thermography was conducted in TAMU's Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel (M6QT) and the Actively Controlled Expansion (ACE) hypersonic tunnel. Measurements and CFD conducted on BOLT2 will yield a better understanding of the turbulent flow and boundary layer transition
Examining Inferences from Neural Network Estimators of Binary Choice Processes: Marginal Effects, and Willingness-to-Pay
To satisfy the utility maximization hypothesis in binary choice modeling, logit and probit models must make a priori assumptions regarding the underlying functional form of a representative utility function. Such theoretical restrictions may leave the postulated estimable model statistically misspecified. This may lead to significant bias in substantive inferences, such as willingness-to-pay (or accept) measures, in environmental, natural resource and applied economic studies. Feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural networks (FFBANN) provide a potentially powerful semi-nonparametric method to avoid potential misspecifications and provide more valid inference. This paper shows that a single-hidden layer FFBANN can be interpreted as a logistic regression with a flexible index function and can be subsequently used for statistical inference purposes, such as estimation of marginal effects and willingness-to-pay measures. To the authors’ knowledge, the derivation and estimation of marginal effects and other substantive measures using neural networks are not available in the economics literature and is thus a novel contribution. An empirical application is conducted using FFBANNs to demonstrate estimation of marginal effects and willingness-to-pay in a contingent valuation and stated choice experimental framework. We find that FFBANNs can replicate results from binary choice models commonly used in the applied economics literature and can improve on substantive inferences derived from these models
Diversity and Inclusion in U.S. Universities and the Pursuit of Global Leadership
Andrew WefaldThis paper will discuss why global leadership is necessary and how to begin the process of developing global leaders. In order to do this, this paper will examine universities in the United States and how they attempt to engage students in diversity, inclusion, and leadership. Some common themes will be highlighted that describe the tactics used by these universities. A connection will be made between these themes and the commonalities found among various leadership frameworks from countries and cultures around the world. The combination of these findings will form a discussion around how to develop global leaders who are prepared to lead across differences in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected
