Tukey-Median of Means-Gradients for Langevin Dynamics: a Robust Approach to Fitting Machine Learning Models
Median-of-Means (MoM) estimators have emerged as powerful tools for robust learning when data are corrupted by outliers or exhibit heavy-tailed distributions. However, incorporating MoM principles to design robust loss functions typically renders the underlying optimization problem highly non-convex, posing significant challenges for the design of efficient, polynomial-time algorithms. In this work, we apply MoM principle at the gradient level using Tukey median to robustly estimate the uncorrupted gradient. More precisely, we propose a novel Tukey MoM-based variant of Stochastic Gradient Langevin Dynamics (TMoM-SGLD) which enjoys strong theoretical guarantees, including hitting-time bounds showing convergence to approximate stationary points of the underlying uncorrupted loss. Contrary to prior MoM estimators, our results hold in broad nonconvex settings, making TMoM-SGLD particularly relevant to modern machine learning tasks. Experiments on corrupted linear regression tasks demonstrate that, unlike prior approaches, TMoM-SGLD remains effective even under high levels of outlier contamination. Additionally, we further validate our approach on a deep learning task, showing its capabilities to robustly train neural networks

In a context of informational saturation, where attention constitutes the scarcest resource, this study examines the strategic responses of independent artists. It demonstrates how, confronted with the decontextualization of music and an asymmetry in promotional capacities, they mobilize narrative mechanisms. In order to differentiate themselves, they construct a complex framework resting on four pillars: the Artistic Persona, which provides the project with a recognizable identity; Storytelling, which weaves a temporal narrative thread; World-Building, which generates a symbolic universe; and Transmedia Narration, which coordinates the narrative across multiple platforms. The overarching objective is to transform the listener from a passive consumer into an active participant, and subsequently into a member of an engaged community. This community, in turn, becomes a powerful driver of development and the foundation of emerging economic models. The study further assesses how such deep attachment can be translated into financial viability through mechanisms such as crowdfunding and subscription models, thereby converting loyalty into direct support. Nevertheless, this approach is not without risks: it exposes audiences to narrative fatigue and exclusion, while artists face the challenges of creative exhaustion and the pressure of sustained authenticity. The principal danger lies in narrative dissonance, as any inconsistency may undermine the bond of trust, ultimately jeopardizing the very foundation of the strategy. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that within the attention economy, the sustainability of independent artists depends less on the pursuit of mass audiences than on their capacity to construct a singular narrative—one that conveys meaning and fosters community building.

Dropout-Robust Mechanisms for Differentially Private and Fully Decentralized Mean Estimation
Achieving differentially private computations in decentralized settings poses significant challenges, particularly regarding accuracy, communication cost, and robustness against information leakage. While cryptographic solutions offer promise, they often suffer from high communication overhead or require centralization in the presence of network failures. Conversely, existing fully decentralized approaches typically rely on relaxed adversarial models or pairwise noise cancellation, the latter suffering from substantial accuracy degradation if parties unexpectedly disconnect. In this work, we propose IncA, a new protocol for fully decentralized mean estimation, a widely used primitive in data-intensive processing. Our protocol, which enforces differential privacy, requires no central orchestration and employs low-variance correlated noise, achieved by incrementally injecting sensitive information into the computation. First, we theoretically demonstrate that, when no parties permanently disconnect, our protocol achieves accuracy comparable to that of a centralized setting-already an improvement over most existing decentralized differentially private techniques. Second, we empirically show that our use of low-variance correlated noise significantly mitigates the accuracy loss experienced by existing techniques in the presence of dropouts

International audienceIn recent decades, numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Adapted Physical Activity (APA) interventions in improving the mental health of individuals. However, a limitation of these studies is their predominant focus on homogeneous groups, characterized by similar diseases or disorders and characteristics. Thus, effects associated with these groups may largely account for the observed benefits, rather than the physical activity itself. This study aimed to investigate the impact of an eight-week APA intervention on anxiety, depression, and self-esteem in a heterogeneous group of participants with diverse health conditions and ages. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 38) that engaged in the eight-week APA intervention or a control group (n = 31) that delayed participation. The findings of this study provide compelling evidence that an APA intervention significantly improves self-esteem while reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, even in a heterogeneous group. These results contribute to the understanding of the effects of APA on mental health outcomes and support its implementation for diverse populations. Further research comparing homogeneous and heterogeneous groups and exploring the underlying mechanisms is warranted.
"The present doctoral research aims to shed light, from a socio-historical and ethnographic perspective, on the conditions of perception and appropriation of themes relating to worker cooperatives and the social and solidarity economy (SSE) within the trade union CGT, while articulating the study of these discursive and idealised productions to the actual practices of trade unionists within worker cooperatives. The aim of the research is to understand the effects of employee takeovers on work, trade unions, and the career and activism of employees. The combination of socio-historical and ethnographic approach provided a fully-fledged investigative tool for examining the subject of the study. Combining dispositional and intersectional approaches, the fieldwork is based on archives, participant observation and interviews. The thesis renews studies on worker cooperatives by taking a multi-scale and diachronic approach to discursive practices and the way in which these representations impact the actual practices of trade unionists within cooperatives. This doctoral work lies at the crossroads of three sub-disciplines. Firstly, on their own scale, the results presented in this thesis constitute a contribution to the social history of political ideas, worker cooperatives and the SSE. This work provides information on the production, circulation and appropriation of these themes, as well as on the agents involved in introducing them into a trade union organisation. Thus, the present thesis offers an analysis of the CGT's doctrinal transformations over four decades through the study of these related themes. Secondly, it complements certain contributions to the political sociology of trade unionism by studying, from an ethnographic standpoint, what appears to be trade union co-management practices, as well as the driving forces behind trade unionism involvement in working-class environments. The practical and discursive adaptations of the trade union organisation within the cooperatives are considered in the context of changes in the workplace that are impacting the modes of political subjectivation of subordinate employees. Finally, it contributes to the sociology of work within worker cooperatives, to an understanding of the wage relationship within them and of the modes of putting people to work in these companies, which are considered to be different, by considering together the reconfigurations of the wage relationship, the organisation of work and modes of resistance.""Cette recherche doctorale entend renseigner, dans des perspectives socio-historique et ethnographique, les conditions de réception et d’appropriation des thématiques relatives aux coopératives de production et à « l’ESS » au sein de la CGT, tout en articulant l’étude de ces productions discursives et idéelles aux pratiques concrètes des syndicalistes au sein des coopératives.
