    Analysis of RASFF notifications for food products in the period 2020-2024: general trends and the case of Türkiye

    This study analyzes and compares food-related notifications reported in the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) between 2020 and 2024, with a specific focus on products originating from T & uuml;rkiye. Using a descriptive approach, data retrieved from the RASFF database were classified by year, notification type, food category, hazard category, and risk level. A total of 20,747 food notifications were recorded during the study period, of which 2,255 (10.87%) were related to Turkish-origin products. Fruit and vegetables were the most frequently reported food category (4,115 notifications, 19.8%), while pesticide residues constituted the most common hazard overall. Similarly, among Turkish-origin notifications, fruit and vegetables accounted for 72.6% (1,637 notifications), with chlorpyrifos identified as the most frequently reported pesticide. The predominant notification type was 'border rejection' both in general and for Turkish-origin products. These findings highlight the ongoing challenges in food safety, particularly concerning pesticide contamination. To address these issues, it is essential that producers adopt Integrated Pest Management and Good Agricultural Practices alongside the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems. Furthermore, regulatory authorities should expand and strengthen training programs to enhance compliance and food safety standards

    Evaluating the prognostic role of glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors in first line: a study by the Turkish Oncology Group Kidney Cancer Consortium (TKCC)

    Purpose Identifying prognostic indicators for risk stratification in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies and follow-up plans. This study aims to investigate the prognostic role of the glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR) in patients with mRCC receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) as first-line therapy. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Turkish Oncology Group Kidney Cancer Consortium Database. GLR was calculated by dividing the fasting glucose (mmol/L) by the lymphocyte count (x109/L). We categorized patients into two categories based on their median GLR level. Results The analysis included a total of 598 patients. We found that progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly longer in the GLR-low group, with a median PFS of 15.05 months (95% CI 12.7-17.4) compared to 7.79 months (95% CI 6.6-9.0) in the GLR-high group (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis identified GLR as an independent risk factor for poor PFS (HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.12-1.72; p = 0.003). Overall survival (OS) was also significantly longer in the GLR-low group, with a median OS of 38.47 months (95% CI, 30.9-46.0) compared to 24.15 months (95% CI 18.0-30.2) in the GLR-high group (p = 0.001). GLR was an independent predictor for OS in multivariate analysis (HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.12-1.86; p = 0.004). Conclusion The GLR can be a valuable prognostic marker for glucose metabolism and systemic inflammatory status in this patient population.     Preliminary formulation and physical evaluation of Centella asiatica-based lotion for sunscreen application

This study explores the preliminary formulation and physical evaluation of herbal sunscreen lotions incorporating Centella asiatica extract. Recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, C. asiatica is a promising botanical candidate for photoprotective skincare products. Five emulsion-based formulations were developed with varying extract concentrations, and their viscosity and density were assessed over a 21-day period. Results showed that higher concentrations of C. asiatica led to increased viscosity, indicating enhanced emulsion structuring, particularly in formulation F2 (18.47% extract), which consistently exhibited the highest viscosity values. Meanwhile, density did not correlate linearly with extract concentration, with the highest value observed in formulation F3 (11.05% extract), suggesting optimal emulsifier-extract interaction. No visual signs of instability such as phase separation were observed in any formulation during the study period. These findings highlight the role of C. asiatica in modifying the rheological properties of emulsions and support its feasibility for integration into phytocosmetic sunscreen products. The results provide a physical foundation for future investigations, including SPF analysis and biological efficacy studies, aiming to optimize herbal formulations for dermatological use. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

    Bu tez çalışması, küresel çevre sorunları ve iklim krizi bağlamında giderek önem kazanan yeşil ekonomi yaklaşımının teorik çerçevesini incelemekte, çevresel ekonomik araçları ve karbon sınırlandırıcı düzenlemeleri analiz etmektedir. Çalışmanın temel amacı, düşük karbonlu ekonomiye geçiş sürecinde kullanılan politika araçlarının etkinliğini incelemek ve sürdürülebilir kalkınma hedeflerine ulaşmada bu araçların potansiyel katkılarını ortaya koymaktır. Tez, beş ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde, yeşil ekonomi ve sürdürülebilir kalkınma kavramları tarihsel gelişimleri ve temel ilkeleri çerçevesinde ele alınmış, bu kavramların birbiriyle ilişkisi çeşitli kurumsal yaklaşımlar doğrultusunda incelenmiştir. İkinci bölümde, karbon emisyonlarının ekonomik, çevresel ve sosyal etkilerine odaklanılarak, emisyon azaltımının önemi ve aciliyeti vurgulanmıştır. Bu bölümde, karbon döngüsü ve karbon emisyonlarının makroekonomik ve mikroekonomik yansımaları kapsamlı bir şekilde analiz edilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, çevresel ekonomik araçlar detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmış, çevresel vergiler, yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları, teşvikler, sübvansiyonlar ve enerji verimliliği politikaları gibi ekonomik enstrümanların tasarımı ve uygulanması incelenmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde, karbon sınırlandırıcı düzenlemeler kapsamında emisyonların sınıflandırılması, karbon vergisi, karbon yakalama ve depolama teknolojileri, sınırda karbon düzenlemeleri, emisyon hedefleri ve karbon piyasaları ayrıntılı olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bu bölümde ayrıca, net sıfır, iklim nötr ve karbon nötr gibi kavramların farklılıkları ve uygulama alanları da açıklanmıştır. Tezin sonuç bölümünde, çevresel ekonomik araçların ve karbon sınırlandırıcı düzenlemelerin etkinliği değerlendirilmiş, politika tasarımındaki başarı faktörleri ve küresel iş birliğinin önemi vurgulanmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, çevresel ekonomik araçların başarısının politika tasarımının kalitesine, piyasa koşullarına ve kurumsal kapasiteye bağlı olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca, karbon sınırlandırıcı düzenlemelerin emisyon azaltımında etkili olabilmesi için uluslararası koordinasyon, şeffaf uygulama mekanizmaları ve adil geçiş politikalarının geliştirilmesinin önemi ortaya konulmuştur. Bu çalışma, yeşil ekonomiye geçiş sürecinin yönetilmesinde ekonomik, çevresel ve sosyal boyutların dengeli bir şekilde gözetilmesinin, sürdürülebilir kalkınma hedeflerine ulaşmada kritik önem taşıdığını göstermektedir.     Effect of Microencapsulated and Nonencapsulated Aronia Extract on Paraoxonase 1 Gene Expression and Aortic Histopathology in High-Fat Diet-Fed Rats

    The aim of this study was to determine the effects of microencapsulated and nonencapsulated aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) extract on paraoxonase 1 (PON1) mRNA expression, HDL cholesterol, and aortic atherosclerosis in rat blood and liver tissues. The study involved 42 male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 10 weeks. The experimental groups were as follows: (1) standard diet control (CON), (2) high-fat diet (HF) control, (3) HF + 400 mg/kg aronia extract (HF400E), (4) HF + 200 mg/kg aronia extract (HF200E), (5) HF + 400 mg/kg microencapsulated aronia (HF400C), and (6) HF + 200 mg/kg microencapsulated aronia (HF200C). The rats were fed a HF between the 10th and 20th week, and at the end of the 20th week, all groups except CON were administered aronia extract (200-400 mg/kg) by oral gavage for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, biochemical analyses and aortic histology evaluations were performed. The results showed that the HF significantly increased serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein levels, and hepatic malondialdehyde levels. However, administration of HF400E significantly reduced these parameters in hyperlipidemic rats. Serum PON1 enzyme activity was significantly higher in the HF400E group compared with both the CON (P < .001) and HF (P < .0025) groups. Although PON1 mRNA levels in the HF400E, HF200E, and HF200C groups were higher than in the CON and HF groups, the differences were not statistically significant. Evaluation of the aortic tissues showed normal tissue morphology in all experimental groups, with no signs of atherosclerotic plaques, hyaline or mucoid changes, or endothelial anomalies in the thoracic or aortic arch tissues. These findings suggest that aronia, rich in anthocyanins and other polyphenolic compounds, may help prevent and slow down atherosclerosis by enhancing PON1 enzyme activity, which is involved in preventing lipid oxidation, the first step in atherosclerosis.Scientific Research Projects Commission of Trakya University [TUBAP-2022-190]This study was supported by the Scientific Research Projects Commission of Trakya University with the project number TUBAP-2022-190

    Clinical Outcomes of CDK4/6 Inhibitor Therapy in HR+/HER2-Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Multicenter Comparison of HER2-Low and HER2-Zero Subgroups

    Background: The clinical impact of HER2-low status on the efficacy of cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i). Therapy in patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+), HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC) remains unclear. Methods: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective analysis including 212 female patients with HR+/HER2-MBC treated with CDK4/6is between 2018 and 2022. Patients were classified as HER2-zero or HER2-low based on immunohistochemistry results. Progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), and disease control rate (DCR) were compared between the two groups. Results: Median PFS was 16.0 months in the HER2-low group and 13.9 months in the HER2-zero group (p = 0.40). In first-line therapy, PFS was numerically longer in the HER2-low group (18.6 vs. 14.9 months; p = 0.26) although this was not statistically significant. ORR was 71.4% in HER2-low and 62% in HER2-zero patients, and DCR was 86.6% and 82%, respectively (both p > 0.05). Subgroup analyses showed that within the HER2-low group, patients with >= 2 metastatic sites had significantly shorter PFS compared with those with a single site (14.1 vs. 20.2 months; p = 0.02), and the presence of visceral metastases was associated with poorer PFS (p = 0.003). Overall survival (OS) data were immature, with only 24.6% of the patients deceased at the time of analysis. Conclusion: HER2 status did not significantly impact treatment outcomes with CDK4/6i in HR+/HER2-negative MBC patients. However, subgroup analyses indicated that metastatic burden, particularly the number of metastatic sites and the presence of visceral disease, may adversely influence PFS. These findings highlight the need for further validation in larger prospective studies

    The Relationship Between Nursing Students' Cyberloafing Behaviors and Their Academic Achievement

    With the widespread integration of the Internet into daily life and its increasing use in education, it has been observed that students sometimes use the Internet for purposes other than its intended academic functions. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between cyberloafing behaviors of nursing students and their academic achievement. This study is a descriptive prospective study. The study was conducted with 286 nursing students. Data were obtained between March 4 and June 7, 2024, using the Information Form and Cyberloafing Scale. The mean total score of the Cyberloafing Scale for nursing students was 2.28 ± 0.82. It was determined that there was a weak negative correlation between nursing students' academic grade point averages and Cyberloafing Scale "sharing,""gaming/gambling"subdimension, and scale total score average. It is important for nurse educators to make courses more engaging for students by using diverse educational materials and teaching methods and to ensure active student participation. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

    In the coming years, electricity demand is expected to continuously increase. This rise poses a significant obstacle to the decarbonization of energy systems due to the heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Furthermore, residences account for a considerable percentage of global electricity consumption and carbon emissions. Given this, enhancing renewable energy utilization and implementing effective energy management in residential areas offer a promising solution for sustainability. Specifically, the varying numbers of electric vehicles (EVs) and diverse capacities of renewable energy sources (RES) within a residential area must also be meticulously considered in energy management strategies. This study aims to develop an optimal energy management model for a residential area, taking into account different numbers of electric vehicles and various capacities of renewable energy sources. The model is designed to ensure the economic operation of the residential area, maximize solar energy utilization, and optimize the load factor. Power generated from renewable energy sources can be directly utilized within the residential area, or, in instances of surplus production, sold to the electricity grid. Similarly, power supplied by discharging electric vehicle batteries can also be sold to the electricity grid or used within the residential area. This optimization strategy is modeled using a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approach. Within the scope of this study, detailed case analyses were conducted considering different numbers of electric vehicles and various renewable energy capacities, and the obtained results were compared. For test cases, real load data from a residential area in Edirne, Türkiye, were utilized. The results demonstrate that the developed model successfully achieves the desired performance in terms of profit and load factor maximization objectives. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
