    Catalogue of the type specimens of the family Hydrometridae (Insecta, Hemiptera, Heteroptera) in the Natural History Museum Vienna

    The type specimens of the gerromorphan family Hydrometridae housed in the Natural History Museum Vienna are catalogued. Information on type status, label data, and current taxonomic status is provided. The treated type material consists of 92 specimens of ten nominal taxa of species and subspecies, including three holotypes and 89 paratypes (including two allotypes). Photographs of the three holotypes are provided

    The Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW) possesses 1282 type specimens of 75 Raphidioptera species and subspecies. The type status of one specimen of Ophiopsis mediterranea H Aspöck, U Aspöck & Rausch, 1977, marked as type, could not be confirmed. Two types of the species Mongoloraphidia (Hissaroraphidia) karatauica H Aspöck & U Aspöck, 1995 are missing. Of the 75 species and subspecies, 68 belong to the family Raphidiidae and seven species to the family Inocelliidae. The species are listed in alphabetical order within the families. The page number of the original description, the type locality and the current name are recorded. The major part of the registered specimens belongs to species described by H Aspöck, U Aspöck and H Rausch

    A new species of the genus Leptobrachella (Anura, Megophryidae) from central Guangdong Province, China

    In this study, a new species, Leptobrachella kungfu sp. nov., from Foshan City, central Guangdong Province, China, is described based on a combination of molecular and morphological data. Phylogenetically, the new species is closely related to L. yunkaiensis from western Guangdong Province and can be distinguished from all congeners by a combination of discrete morphological characters. A key to the species of this genus from Guangdong and a distribution map are provided to support further regional research and conservation

    BackgroundVespertilio murinus belong to the genus Vespertilio and are widely distributed in Europe, the Middle East and Northeast Asia, Recently, the presence of the V. murinus has been confirmed in Japan, suggesting the possibility of its habitation on the Korean Peninsula. However, ecological information regarding its presence in the Korean Peninsula is extremely limited.New informationIn an urban area of Sejong City, South Korea, a bat within the genus Vespertilio was rescued by personnel of the Chungnam Wild Animal Rescue Center. The bat, which was believed to have been hibernating on an exterior wall of a building, was initially identified as Vespertilio sinensis. However, the confirmed presence of two pairs of nipples raised the possibility that the bat was a specimen of V. murinus. The measurement of the forearm length (FAL) of this bat was 45.67 mm, which is within the 95% confidence interval of the previously reported FALs of V. murinus. Additionally, the results of mtDNA sequence analysis indicated that the rescued bat could be differentiated from the closely-related species V. sinensis with respect to the sequences of 13PCGs, COI, Cytb and ND1. Finally, phylogenetic analysis revealed that this bat clustered in a clade with previously described V. murinus. Collectively, these findings provided convincing evidence to indicate that the rescued individual was a V. murinus, marking the first recorded observation of this species in South Korea

    Revision of the millipede family Dalodesmidae in Madagascar, with descriptions of two new Malagasy species of Dalodesmus Cook, 1896 (Diplopoda, Polydesmida)

    The family Dalodesmidae Cook, 1896 in the fauna of Madagascar is reviewed and shown to presently encompass eight species in three genera: Dalodesmus Cook, 1896 (six species), Eutubercularium Brölemann, 1916 (one species), and Phymatodesmus de Saussure & Zehntner, 1897 (one species). These genera are diagnosed, and their respective species keyed, all being endemic to Madagascar proper and/or the immediately adjacent islets of Nosy Be and/or Nosy Sakatia. Dalodesmus currently contains six species, including two new, all supplied either with brief descriptive notes and available iconography or extensive descriptions and new illustrations, as follows: D. hamatus (Brandt, 1841), from an unspecified locality in Madagascar, now redescribed from a male specimen from Makira, northeastern Madagascar; D. odontopezus (Attems, 1898), from Nosy Be Isle; D. orator Hoffman, 1974, from Ambohimitombo, central Madagascar; D. tectus Cook, 1896 (= D. hova (de Saussure & Zehntner, 1897), syn. nov.), originally described from an unspecified locality in central Madagascar, with a male type and additional males identified as D. hova recorded from the Andasibe National Park (= Périnet) in east-central Madagascar. Additionally, two new species are described, D. speophilus sp. nov., from Grotte de Anjohibe, northwestern Madagascar, and D. kompantsevi sp. nov., from Montagne d’Ambre, northern Madagascar. Both the type species of Dalodesmus and its synonym Tubercularium Attems, 1898, D. tectus and D. odontopezus, respectively, are partly revised and illustrated based on holotypes, while D. hamatus is duly described and illustrated based on the first discovery of a male. Both Eutubercularium and Phymatodesmus are still monospecific, comprising only E. voeltzkowi (Mesibov, Wesener & Hollier, 2018), from Nosy Be Isle, and P. sakalava (de Saussure & Zehntner, 1901), from Andasibe, respectively. The latter species is fully redescribed and illustrated for the first time from male material

    From surface to caves: new species of Diploexochus Brandt, 1833 (Oniscidea, Armadillidae) from Colombia, with the description of the first troglobitic species

    Two new species of Diploexochus are described, Diploexochus cacique sp. nov. from Cerro Bañaderos in Hatonuevo, La Guajira, and Diploexochus troglobius sp. nov. from Roca Madre Cave, Toluviejo, Sucre, both from the Tropical Dry Forest (TDF) areas of the Colombian Caribbean. The latter represent the first troglobitic species of the genus. Moreover, based on specimens from Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena (type locality), Venezillo brevispinis is placed into Diploexochus and an identification key for all species of the genus is given. The present work describes the first troglobitic species of the genus, and expand the knowledge of its distribution in northern South America

    A new pheretimoid earthworm of the genus Metaphire Sims & Easton, 1972 (Oligochaeta, Megascolecidae) from northeastern China with data from the mitochondrial genome

    A new pheretimoid earthworm species, Metaphire liaoningensis sp. nov., was investigated in northeastern China. The taxonomy of M. liaoningensis sp. nov. using morphological characters and molecular data is reported, as well as its current geographical range in northeastern China. The new species, belonging to the M. houlleti species group, is characterized by having three pairs of spermathecal pores in 6/7/8/9, round and small pre-clitellar genital markings medio-ventral to the spermathecal pore opening, the first dorsal pore in 12/13, and the spermathecae ampulla large, nearly elliptical with a surface wrinkled and a duct long and stout. The molecular phylogenetic position of M. liaoningensis sp. nov. within the M. houlleti species group is performed by COI and mitogenomic data, respectively. The COI K2P genetic distance between the new species and the other species within the M. houlleti species group was at least 16%. This is the second updated report of a new pheretimoid species in northeastern China since the last decade

    Synopsis of Maracanthus (Loranthaceae) and description of M. kuijtii, a new species from the Eastern Andes of Colombia

    Background and aims – Ongoing studies on Colombian mistletoes revealed an undescribed species of Maracanthus (Loranthaceae) endemic to the Colombian Eastern Cordillera (Cordillera Oriental). This species is described and illustrated here, and a checklist of the species accepted in Maracanthus is also provided, including a taxonomic key, references to the known iconography of the genus, and taxonomic and geographic comments. Material and methods – This study is based on a literature review according to the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants, examination of herbarium specimens using physical specimens and digital images, and morphological studies based on samples from dried and rehydrated specimens. Key results – A detailed morphological analysis revealed that the new species is part of the little-known genus Maracanthus. The dichotomous key, as well as the taxonomic and geographic notes, allow users to recognise the five known species in this genus, showing that they occur in restricted distribution areas

    Plectranthias raki (Teleostei, Serranidae), a new species of perchlet from mesophotic coral ecosystems of the Maldives

    Herein, we describe a new species of Plectranthias perchlet found at depths of 100–125 meters in mesophotic coral ecosystems of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Plectranthias raki sp. nov. is unique in both morphology and coloration. The following combination of characters distinguishes it from all known congeners: dorsal fin X, 15; anal-fin rays III, 7; pectoral-fin rays 13 | 13 (13 | 12), all unbranched; principal caudal-fin rays 9 + 8; lateral line complete with 30–32 tubed scales; gill rakers 5 + 12; circumpeduncular scales 11–12; and absence of antrorse or retrorse spines on ventral margin of preopercle. Coloration in life consists of a white to light pink body with two indistinct rows of irregularly shaped red-orange to yellow-orange patches along the dorsal two-thirds of the body, a golden-yellow opercle and maxilla, an indistinct yellow stripe on the dorsal fin, two yellow spots near the base of the anal fin, and two irregularly shaped yellow-orange spots located on either side of centermost caudal-fin rays. With this publication, the genus Plectranthias now comprises 67 valid species. This discovery adds to a strong body of research highlighting the novel biodiversity of mesophotic ecosystems, especially in locations like the Indian Ocean, where few prior ichthyological surveys have been conducted

    Essential oils – a review of the natural evolution of applications and some future perspectives

    Since ancient times, essential oils (EOs) have been used, thoroughly explored, and regarded as products of great importance for humanity. Currently, EOs represent not only an important part of the contemporary pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry but are also considered as sources for novel drug candidates. The article discusses the applications of EOs in historical terms, the current applications, and the future perspectives. Although there are many studies that involve EOs, the therapeutic potential of EOs is not fully investigated. In the next decades it is highly likely that some compounds, isolated from EOs, could be included in the composition of novel drug candidates with targets in neurology, cardiology, or oncology. Moreover, EOs represent important key points in the development of novel environmentally friendly preservatives and pesticides
