Karyotype characteristics and COI gene data of Chironomus degelenus Seisebaev, Bakhtin & Siirin, 2001 (Diptera, Chironomidae) from the Eastern Caucasus (Dagestan) and its relationship with the Nearctic species Chironomus atrella (Townes, 1945)
This study provides new details on the karyotype characteristics, chromosomal polymorphism, and COI gene data of the Dipteran species Chironomus degelenus from the Eastern Caucasus. This is the first record of Ch. degelenus in the Eastern Caucasus (and Russia in General). The Caucasian population of this species shows eight banding sequences and low polymorphism. We discovered a new banding sequence, degC2, in Ch. degelenus. Only arm C showed an inversion polymorphism. There are striking similarities between the polytene chromosome banding patterns of Ch. degelenus and Ch. atrella. Therefore, we propose including Ch. degelenus in the Ch. atrella group of closely related species. Phylogenetic analysis of COI gene sequences reveals two distinct entities referred to as “Ch. atrella”, with a higher-than-average K2P distance of 6.2%. This pattern is attributed to “dark taxa”; genetic information in databases from unknown and taxonomically challenging species. We also discuss the potential link between the emergence of the species Ch. degelenus and Ch. atrella and Pliocene climate changes
The genome sequence of the Common Brassy Ringlet, Erebia cassioides (Reiner & Hohenwarth, 1792) (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)
We present a chromosome-level genome assembly from a female specimen of the Common Brassy Ringlet Erebia cassioides (Arthropoda, Insecta, Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae). The genome consists of a primary assembly of 546 Mb and an alternate assembly of 406 Mb. The primary assembly is scaffolded into 11 chromosomes, including the Z and the W sex chromosomes. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 15.19 kb
A preliminary checklist of the Diptera of Armenia
This paper presents the first comprehensive checklist of the Diptera of Armenia, encompassing 53 families and more than 1361 species, including 106 species recorded for the first time in the country. These new records significantly expand the known dipteran fauna of the region, highlighting both the biological richness of Armenia and the substantial gaps that remain in our knowledge of the Diptera of the region. New records are given in the families Anthomyiidae, Muscidae, Scathophagidae and Sciomyzidae. The checklist has been compiled through a synthesis of historical literature, museum collections, and recent field surveys, and will provide an essential reference point for future faunistic, ecological, and conservation studies. Given the ecological sensitivity of many dipteran groups and their utility as bioindicators, this baseline inventory will contribute not only to taxonomy and biogeography but also to broader environmental monitoring efforts within Armenia
Diversity, abundance and distribution of caddisfly (Insecta, Trichoptera) families in relation to environmental parameters across freshwater streams in Singapore
In land-scarce Singapore, where fresh water is a critical resource, Trichoptera communities can serve as a biomonitoring tool, yet are poorly known. This study seeks to address this gap by establishing a preliminary understanding of trichopteran diversity and distribution in Singapore’s freshwater streams. From October 2023–January 2024, 11 stream sites across forested nature reserves (N = 5), buffer parks (N = 4), and urban areas (N = 2) were surveyed for trichopteran larvae. Only eight sites (four in forest streams, four in buffer streams) yielded Trichoptera, totalling 107 larval specimens comprising six families (Calamoceratidae, Ecnomidae, Hydropsychidae, Leptoceridae, Odontoceridae, and Polycentropodidae). Leptoceridae were most abundant, Ecnomidae were the rarest, and Hydropsychidae were the most widely distributed. In this study, Trichoptera were absent from the urban streams, which had greater depth and total dissolved solids, but similar Trichoptera assemblages and environmental parameters were recorded in both forest and buffer streams. Although differences between the latter two stream types were not statistically significant, buffer streams had the highest abundance and taxonomic richness. Comparison with past literature also reveals differences in recorded Trichoptera diversity, thus, this study presents an updated record for Trichoptera in Singapore’s streams. These findings further add to a baseline for future biomonitoring, research, and informing long-term freshwater conservation efforts in Singapore
Fauna, distribution, and DNA barcoding data of caddisflies (Insecta, Trichoptera) in Croatia
This study presents a thorough overview of the diversity of the Trichoptera fauna in Croatia, encompassing several key aspects. First, it offers a historical overview of Trichoptera research conducted within the country, tracing the development and major milestones of this field. Second, it provides a detailed analysis of the distribution and species diversity of caddisflies across Croatia’s three geographical regions, the Continental, Alpine, and Mediterranean, as well as within two ecoregions (ER5 – Dinaric Western Balkan and ER11 – Pannonian Lowlands) and two major river basins (AS – Adriatic Sea basin and BS – Black Sea basin). This biogeographic assessment is based on comprehensive records of adult specimens and, in certain cases, on DNA barcoding data obtained from larval stages. Third, the study includes a thorough examination of species synonyms and a critical review of the existing literature. Finally, it delivers a faunistic and taxonomic review of selected species and subspecies. A total of 225 species belonging to 18 families and 74 genera have been identified. Two of these species are represented by two and three subspecies, respectively, bringing the total number of recorded Trichoptera taxa in Croatia to 228. The presence of 223 species was confirmed in the adult stage. Only two species were identified by DNA barcoding as larvae. In the Continental region 170 species were recorded, in the Alpine region 155, and in the Mediterranean part 131 species. The Black Sea basin contains 203, and the Adriatic basin 141 species. In the Pannonian Lowland region (Ecoregion 11) we determined 152 and in the Dinaric Western Balkan (Ecoregion 5) 197 species. The BOLD Systems database currently contains about 593 DNA barcoded Trichoptera specimens from Croatia comprising 176 species, identifying 211 BINs, covering 78% of Croatian Trichoptera fauna
Higher predicted climate-change vulnerability for spring-dwelling freshwater biota
Environmental change threatens freshwater biodiversity through altered temperature and precipitation patterns. Available data is frequently insufficient to determine impacts at the species level leading to misinterpreted species’ vulnerability. Conversely, phylogenetic relationships, current distributions and ecological traits of the caddisfly subfamily Drusinae are well known. Thus, species distribution models (SDMs) were set up for 47 Drusinae species to assess individual and trait-specific climate change (CC) vulnerability. Species were grouped by larval feeding guild, stream zonation preference and level of endemism. Models were calibrated with predictors describing climate, topography and geology at a spatial resolution of 1 km2 and were projected for five general circulation models under four future climate scenarios. To limit dispersal, distribution projections were restricted to a maximum of 500 km until the year 2080. Relative predicted range change fluctuated between -100% and 197%, with extinction predicted for five species. Altitudinal shifts varied between -2% and +15%, with distribution centroids shifting between 28 km and 119 km. Our results identify stream zonation, a non-phylogenetic trait, as the best indicator of CC vulnerability. Furthermore, two important conclusions are highlighted: monitoring is best done at the species level while the biodiversity of springs and low order streams requires considerably more attention
First record of the four-pore slender giant moray, Strophidon tetraporus (Actinopterygii, Anguilliformes, Muraenidae), from Sinan, Korea
A single individual (2318 mm total length) of Strophidon tetraporus Huang et Liao, 2020 was collected from Heuksan-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea, in December 2023. This species is characterized by the following morphological traits: elongated body, biserial maxillary and dentary teeth, four infraorbital pores, 195 vertebrae (8 predorsal, 79 preanal), and continuous dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Genetic analysis of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences confirmed its identity, with only 0.02–0.03 percentage-point divergence from the type specimens of S. tetraporus. This record represents the first verified occurrence of S. tetraporus in Korean waters and extends the species’ distribution to its northernmost limit
Microbotryozyma lacustris sp. nov. (Basidiomycota, Ustilentylomataceae) and Cyberlindnera basumtsoensis sp. nov. (Ascomycota, Phaffomycetaceae), two novel yeasts isolated from freshwater Lake Basom Tso, China
High-altitude lakes in Tibet represent unique and underexplored reservoirs of microbial diversity. An investigation of yeast diversity in Basom Lake, a high-altitude lake in Tibet, China, led to the discovery of two novel species: Microbotryozyma lacustris sp. nov. and Cyberlindnera basumtsoensis sp. nov. Phylogenetic analyses of the ITS region and D1/D2 LSU rRNA gene sequences, complemented by phenotypic characterization, confirmed their distinct taxonomic status. Microbotryozyma lacustris represents the third species described in its genus and the first documented occurrence of Microbotryozyma in a freshwater habitat. Cyberlindnera basumtsoensis further expands the ecological diversity of the genus Cyberlindnera. This study significantly enriches the taxonomic framework of both genera and underscores the value of high-altitude lakes as reservoirs of novel yeast diversity
Study on the histochemical localization of essential oil and evaluation of the chemical profiles of wild populations of Salvia nemorosa L.
Salvia nemorosa L. is a widely distributed but comparatively understudied Salvia species. This work investigated the tissue localization of lipophilic constituents and profiled essential oil (EO) composition of wild Bulgarian populations. Stems were hand-sectioned and stained with Sudan III to visualize lipid deposits by light microscopy. EOs isolated from the collected flowering aerial parts from four sites were obtained by 4 h hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS); constituents were identified by RI and library match. Results: Sudan III staining revealed abundant red–orange lipid droplets distributed throughout the internal and epidermal tissues, including within the glandular trichomes. Across sites, 31–45 volatile compounds were identified, representing 91.96–97.71% of the total oils. Profiles were dominated by sesquiterpenes: germacrene D (17.64–41.34%) and β-caryophyllene (9.50–22.38%) were major constituents, with site-specific contributions of sabinene (up to 21.89%) and bicyclogermacrene (up to 7.67%). Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (SH) comprised 50.96–70.81% of each EO, followed by oxygenated sesquiterpenes (8.19–25.58%). Monoterpenes were present in low concentrations in all samples, except for the Ivan Vazovo EO sample. Conclusion: Salvia nemorosa L. from Bulgaria exhibits SH-dominant chemotypes with marked geographic variation. The high levels of germacrene D and β-caryophyllene support the species as a potential source of bioactive sesquiterpenes and merit further biological evaluation
A new species record of Hemiphyllodactylus lungcuensis Luu, Nguyen, Do, Pham, Hoang, Nguyen, Le, Ziegler, Grismer & Grismer, 2023 (Squamata, Gekkonidae) from Yunnan Province in China
Hemiphyllodactylus lungcuensis Luu, Nguyen, Do, Pham, Hoang, Nguyen, Le, Ziegler, Grismer & Grismer was described in 2023, based on seven specimens. Its type locality is Lung Cu Commune, Dong Van District, Ha Giang Province, in north-eastern Vietnam, near the Sino-Vietnamese border. Currently, the species is known only from the type locality; there are no records of its occurrence in China.On 10 August 2025, we collected a single Hemiphyllodactylus specimen in Lida Town, Funing County, Yunnan Province, China. In the phylogenetic tree, this individual clusters with the paratypes and holotype of H. lungcuensis with strong support. The specimen from China agrees well with the original morphological description of the species and has a minor mean genetic distance of 1.9% in the ND2 gene with the type specimen of this species. Here, we report the first record of H. lungcuensis for China
