The diversity of Acarosporaceae (Acarosporales, Lecanoromycetes) in California
Acarospora alba, A. indistincta, A. sharnoffii, and A. tejonensis are described from California. Sarcogyne fasciculata is described from California and New Mexico. Sarcogyne coeruleonigricans is reported new for California. Sarcogyne lapponica is recognized as a synonym of Acarospora lapponica, its basionym. Morpho-phylogenetic evidence for the first freshwater record of Trichoderma protrudens Samuels & P. Chaverri (Hypocreales, Sordariomycetes)
Trichoderma protrudens Samuels & P. Chaverri was originally described from the trunk of Theobroma cacao L. in Kerala, India, in 2008. Morphologically, it is defined by trichoderma‑like conidiophores bearing subulate or lageniform phialides, green subglobose to obovoidal conidia, and the presence of chlamydospores in culture. Multilocus phylogenetic analyses based on ITS, rpb2, and tef1-α sequence data confirmed the iden‑ tity of the isolates from the Philippines as T. protrudens, with robust support values (100% ML, 1.00 BPP) clustering them with the holotype CBS 121320. This study represents the first global record of T. protrudens in a freshwater ecosystem, expanding this species’ known ecological range into aquatic environments. These findings emphasize the ecological versatility of T. protrudens and underscore the importance of further investigations into the fungal diversity of freshwater habitats
First record of two Leptothecata medusae (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) in Colombia with annotations on their distribution and ecology
Hydromedusae are a group of planktonic cnidarians that represent the medusoid phase in the life cycle of most members of the class Hydrozoa, whose primary function is to produce and release gametes. These organisms are generally small and translucent, with slight pigmentation, except for those that inhabit great depths and exhibit the typical body shape of a jellyfish. In Colombia, studies on this group are limited due to the scarcity of updated taxonomic information and the small number of expert scientists. The most recent inventory records 71 species in the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.In this study, we report for the first time the presence of Eucheilota duodecimalis and Eutonina scintillans in Colombia, based on 28 zooplankton samples collected from seven stations between February and May 2024, using horizontal tows with a simple conical zooplankton net. Our research emphasises the significance of scientific exploration in new geographic regions and provides valuable data on the distribution and ecology of these species, contributing to a deeper understanding of their population dynamics
Evolutionary dynamics of the B chromosomes in the fish species Prochilodus lineatus Valenciennes, 1837 of the Paraná River Basin
The fish species Prochilodus lineatus has an interesting B chromosome system, with three morphological types as acrocentric, metacentric, and submetacentric. However, most cytogenetic studies on this species are restricted to the natural population of the Mogi Guaçu River. Given this, the present work aimed to study the structure karyotypic profile as well as the occurrence of supernumeraries in P. lineatus in several localities in the Paraná River basin, where this species is abundant. The results obtained showed a predominantly conserved karyotypic macrostructure and the presence of B chromosomes in all the seven localities studied, with the exception of the Apa River. Additionally, new variants of morphological characteristics were found in the population of the Batalha River (Reginópolis). These results allow us to infer that there is a large occurrence of B chromosomes in this species, with important differences in B chromosome frequency between the populations, especially in acrocentric and submetacentric B variants. Considering the possible origin and evolution of B chromosomes in P. lineatus, our results allow us to describe the dispersion of metacentric B variants, in contrast with the elimination observed in acrocentric and submetacentric variants
Notes on three closely related species of the genus Pimoa (Araneae, Pimoidae) from Southwest China
The genus Pimoa Chamberlin & Ivie, 1943, is highly diverse and currently contains 85 species, of which 67 are distributed in Asia. In this study, a new species of Pimoa is described from Southwest China: P. shimian Wang, Yao & Zhang, sp. nov. (♂♀). This new species is closely related to P. bomi Zhang & Li, 2021, and P. reniformis Xu & Li, 2007. The taxonomic keys for distinguishing these three closely related species and a distribution map of all Asian pimoids are also provided
First report of the darkling beetle, Opatroides punctulatus Brullé, 1832 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) in Idaho, USA, an expanding adventive species in the Pacific Northwest
Opatroides punctulatus Brullé, 1832 is a detritivore tenebrionid beetle native to the Old World that was detected in the United States over 20 years ago. It is well adapted to Mediterranean climates between 30°N and 45°N, characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. We confirm the presence of this species in south‑west Idaho. This work expands its distribution range >500 km northeast from the previous report. Opatroides punctulatus could become a common pest and even displace native Tenebrionidae species
Comparative analysis of mitochondrial genomes from Buthidae (Scorpiones): gene rearrangement and phylogenetic implications
Scorpions, a diverse group of arachnids consisting of over 2,000 valid species, have received limited research attention in terms of their complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes). To increase the taxonomic sampling frequency of species available for study based on mitogenomes, we reconstructed the complete mitogenomes of five scorpions, Androctonus amoreuxi (Audouin, 1826), Hottentotta tamulus (Fabricius, 1798), Leiurus quinquestriatus (Ehrenberg, 1828), Lychas mucronatus (Fabricius, 1798), and Teruelius flavopiceus (Kraepelin, 1900) within the family Buthidae. These five mitogenomes had a typical circular structure, with total sizes ranging from 14,504 to 15,083 bp. Nucleotide composition analysis indicated that the sequences were biased toward A and T. The Ka/Ks ratios within 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs) were lower than 1, suggesting that they had been subject to purifying selection in Buthidae. Our analyses provide additional evidence on that, in scorpions, the majority of mitogenome rearrangements occurred in tRNAs. Moreover, the genes tRNA-Asp, tRNA-Gln and tRNA-Ile were the hotspots of rearrangement in this order. Phylogenetic analyses based on PCGs supported taxonomic relationships in this taxon. Our results might provide useful insights into the gene arrangement features of scorpion mitogenomes and lay the foundation for further studies on the family Buthidae
Four new araneogenous species and a new genus in Hypocreales (Clavicipitaceae, Cordycipitaceae) from the karst region of China
The karst region in southwestern China is one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world with rich fungal diversity but under-studied. Four fungal species belonging to Chlorocillium (Clavicipitaceae) and Gamszarella (Cordycipitaceae) were isolated from dead spiders. Morphological comparisons, phylogenetic analyses and a PHI analysis based on multigene datasets support the establishment of these new species viz., Chlorocillium guizhouense sp. nov., C. vallense sp. nov., Gamszarella sinensis sp. nov., and G. vallensis sp. nov. are introduced. A new genus, Neogamszarella, is proposed to accommodate Gamszarella antillana, which is phylogenetically distinct from Gamszarella s. str. Our results revealed that further attention needs to be paid to the diversity of araneogenous fungi in the karst regions of southwestern China
Winter is (not) coming: Acoustic monitoring and temperature variation across important bat hibernacula
Little is known about the winter bat activity in Bulgaria, which poses challenges in monitoring potential deviations in their behaviour as a consequence of the warming climate. Using passive acoustic monitoring, we investigated the winter activity in some of Europe’s largest hibernacula. Our findings reveal cave and species-specific activity patterns. Activity was observed throughout each month of the survey, with distinct peaks on specific days. At one high-elevation site, bat activity was restricted to a single night, while the highest overall activity occurred at the highest elevation site (1325 m). The most active species was Myotis capaccinii (Bonaparte, 1837). While bats were mostly active right after sunset following their usual circadian rhythm, some daytime activity was also observed, including emergence at temperatures as low as -8°C. At sites with sufficient activity data, external temperature emerged as a significant positive predictor of bat activity, with higher temperatures associated with increased activity. Our data also suggest that bats rarely forage near the roost entrances. The observed variability in activity levels between study sites highlights the need for high-resolution, site-specific data rather than broad generalisations
Gymnema phuquocense (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), a new species from Vietnam
A new species of Gymnema from Vietnam – G. phuquocense – is described, illustrated, and compared with the similar G. yunnanense. Gymnema phuquocense differs from G. yunnanense by the length of peduncle (3–4 mm vs. 10–13 mm), hairs on corolla lobe margin (absent vs. present), shape of seed (broadly ovate vs. ovate-oblong), shape of scale with 2 prominent longitudinal ridges on corolla tube (lanceolate vs. linear), and length of seeds (9–10 mm vs. 13–15 mm). A diagnostic key of the Gymnema species in Vietnam is also provided
