    New data on the distribution of Rhombodera latipronotum (Mantodea, Mantidae) in Southeast Asia, with species redescription and biogeographic considerations

    This study updates the known distribution of Rhombodera latipronotum Zhang, 1990, a mantis species previously documented only in the Yunnan province of China. New findings confirm its presence in the Guangxi autonomous region and the Indo-Chinese states of Laos and Vietnam. The research incorporates both direct analysis of collected specimens and data gathered from citizen-science platforms. These methodologies have allowed for a redefinition of the species’ range in Southeast Asia and have provided new insights into its external morphology and intraspecific variability. Due to its recent description and the limited availability of scientific literature, R. latipronotum remains poorly understood. This study overcomes these limitations by providing the first detailed description of both sexes, highlighting the intraspecific variability of the specimens, and discussing the potential existence of distinct populations within the species. The research also highlights the immense biodiversity within the surveyed regions, emphasizing the need for extensive exploration to fully catalogue the species of the order Mantodea. Understanding the distribution and ecological roles of these mantids is essential for their conservation. The study’s findings contribute to a deeper knowledge of R. latipronotum and underscore the importance of continued biological surveys and conservation efforts in these biodiverse yet underexplored areas of Southeast Asia

    Two new genera of Lebinthina (Grylloidea, Eneopterinae, Lebinthini) are described from New Guinea, each genus including a new species: Diablotinthus lengguru Robillard & Tan, sp. nov. and Lutinthus timika Robillard & Tan gen. et sp. nov. Diablotinthus also includes D. ambonensis (Robillard, 2010) comb. nov. A new species of Gnominthus Robillard & Vicente is also described from Hihilai Plantation in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea: G. hihilai Robillard & Tan, sp. nov. The calling song of D. lengguru Robillard & Tan, sp. nov. is also described

    Functional properties of barium titanate ceramics alloyed with nickel ferrite

    The paper studies the effect of nickel ferrite addition and sintering temperature on the density, dielectric and piezoelectric characteristics of barium titanate ceramics. A density jump is detected, when with an increase in the ferrite content the density first increases and then drops sharply. Moreover, if at a sintering temperature of 1200 °C the maximum density (5.38 g/cm3) occurs at a ferrite concentration of 0.05 mol.%, then at a sintering temperature of 1300 °C the maximum density (5.62 g/cm3) shifts to the region of higher ferrite concentrations and is 0.1 mol.%. Thus, it can be stated that at a sintering temperature of 1300 °C the ferrite addition in an amount of 0.1 mol.% acts as a sintering activator. X-ray phase analysis showed that in alloyed barium titanate the tetragonal splitting of lines is expressed more strongly, and the calculated lattice parameters a and c differ significantly from the parameters of pure barium titanate. The addition of 0.1 mol.% ferrite lowers the Curie temperature of the phase transition from the cubic phase to the tetragonal phase from 117 to 108.5 °C. Activation of the sintering process with the addition of ferrite up to ~0.1 mol.% makes it possible to reduce the sintering temperature to 1300 °C and obtain ceramics with high functional characteristics. Relative density is 93%, specific resistance is ~1010 Ohm·m, permittivity is 1500, piezoelectric modulus d31 is 85 pC/N, electromechanical coupling coefficient is 0.37

    Characterization of LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 as a cathode material for solid-state lithium batteries: A study on its structural and electrical attributes

    This study presents the synthesis of LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 (LM9F) and its carbon-coated counterpart, LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 with 10% carbon (LM9F-10%C), through a straightforward solid-state method. The synthesis utilized lithium carbonate, manganese (II) acetate tetrahydrate, iron phosphate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, and glucose powder as the carbon source. To achieve a fine powder, a high-energy ball milling was performed at 270 rpm for 8 h, followed by calcination at 700 °C for 3 h and sintering at the same temperature for an additional 2 h, under a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent iron oxidation. Thermoanalytical techniques (TGA–DTA–DSC) were applied between 30 °C and 1000 °C to study the thermal decomposition behaviors of the precursors and pinpoint the phase formation temperature, which was identified at 416 °C. X-ray diffraction analysis verified the formation of a pure olivine orthorhombic structure, corroborated by Rietveld refinement. The morphology of the calcined powders, characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, showed agglomerated semi-spherical particles with an average size of 34 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the phosphate groups integral to the olivine framework. Electrical properties measured via an LCR meter across 20 Hz to 100 kHz demonstrated that the inclusion of carbon significantly reduced impedance and improved the electrical performance of the materials

    Phylogenetic analyses based on 1459 base pairs of the mitochondrial gene ND2 and its flanking tRNAs indicate that Cyrtodactylus consobrinus from the type locality in Sarawak, East Malaysia (Borneo) and C. consobrinus from Peninsular Malaysia are not conspecific. Both populations as well as C. hutan from East Malaysia form a strongly supported monophyletic group even though their relationships to one another remain unresolved. Cyrtodactylus consobrinus from peninsular Malaysia is described herein as the new species C. peninsularis sp. nov. whose type locality is Gunung Belumut, Johor State. Cyrtodactylus peninsularis sp. nov. is diagnosable from all other species in the malayanus group by having statistically different morphospatial positions in multiple factor analyses (MFA) based on size-corrected morphometric and meristic characters. ANOVA analyses of these characters recovered significantly different mean values between C. peninsularis sp. nov. and varying combinations of all other malayanus group species across several size-corrected morphometric and meristic characters. Genetic variation within C. peninsularis sp. nov. is geographically structured across six well supported monophyletic mitochondrial lineages bearing an uncorrected pairwise sequence divergence ranging from 0.97–4.5%. Despite its well supported phylogeographic structure, PCAs and ANOVAs recovered statistically weak morphological separation among the lineages and as such, all are considered conspecific pending a genomic analysis. The phylogeographic structure within the forest-dwelling C. peninsularis sp. nov. is quite similar to that of the stream-adapted ranid frog genus Amolops and less so to that of the microhabitat specialists of the C. pulchellus group and the forest generalist C. quadrivirgatus, all of whom are sympatric across Peninsular Malaysia

    The liverwort genus Haplomitrium, first described by Nees in 1833, is the basal sister group to all other liverworts. It exhibits distinctive traits, including upright shoots, radial leaf arrangement, abundant mucilage and the absence of rhizoids, reflecting its non-vascular nature. Predominantly found in the Southern Hemisphere, specifically Australasia, the genus comprises seven species and two infraspecific taxon globally, with China recording three species — H. blumei, H. mnioides and H. hookeri. These features and its distribution underscore its significance in studying early terrestrial flora.The liverwort species Haplomitrium gibbsiae (Steph.) R.M. Schust., previously considered endemic to Gondwanan regions, has been documented in East Asia for the first time during a floristic survey in the Jiuwanshan National Nature Reserve, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. This discovery expands the known range of the species and, when combined with prior hypotheses, suggests a potential dispersal pathway: following the fragmentation of Gondwana, H. gibbsiae may have spread to India and South America and subsequently from India to East Asia via the Himalayas, resulting in its present-day global distribution. Additionally, based on extensive literature review, the present study discusses the species’ retention of primitive traits and considers its potential as a candidate for future research, aimed at deepening our understanding of early land plant evolution

    A new species of stalked crinoid, Endoxocrinus (Diplocrinus) kexuei sp. nov. belonging to the family Balanocrinidae, is described from cold seeps in the South China Sea. The general appearance of the new species is similar to E. (Diplocrinus) alternicirrus, but can be distinguished from its congener in both morphological characteristics and significant genetic divergences. Endoxocrinus (Diplocrinus) kexuei sp. nov. shows cryptosymplexies without marked symmorphy, and an axial canal usually incompletely filled with a lattice needlelike network, preserving an irregular secondary lumen. The new species attribution is well supported by genetic distance based on the mitochondrial c oxidase subunit I (COI), and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on COI and 16S rRNA. This discovery enhances our understanding of species diversity of Endoxocrinus crinoids in the South China Sea

    Poplar is an important afforestation tree species globally and is widely cultivated in northern China. During a small-scale local disease survey in Ningxia, China, canker and dieback symptoms were observed in Populus alba subsp. pyramidalis trees. The aim of this study was to identify the isolates associated with the symptoms observed and evaluate their pathogenicity on Populus alba subsp. pyramidalis, Malus domestica cv. ‘Fuji’ and Pyrus bretschneideri. Based on multi-gene phylogenetic analyses (ITS, act, rpb2, tef1-α, and tub2) and morphological comparisons, two Cytospora species were identified: C. sinensis and a novel species described here as C. longdensis sp. nov. Pathogenicity assays confirmed both species were pathogenic to Populus alba subsp. pyramidalis, with C. sinensis exhibiting significantly stronger virulence than C. longdensis (p < 0.05). In contrast, their pathogenicity on Malus domestica cv. ‘Fuji’ and Pyrus bretschneideri was negligible, indicating their host preference for Populus alba subsp. pyramidalis. This study highlights the host-specific adaptation of Cytospora species and provides critical insights for managing Populus alba subsp. pyramidalis canker and dieback diseases

    Incidental finding of LAMN during hysterectomy for adnexal tumor

    Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare malignancy originating from the epithelium of the appendix. The diagnosis is difficult to make, and it is often found during surgery. In the present case, we prepared our patient for a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, but during laparotomy, a cystic dilation of the appendix was found. We did an appendectomy and the pathological diagnosis was LAMN. Gynecologists may encounter this disease incidentally. Whenever there is a right abdominal mass, cystic or not, found in the preoperative imaging, gynecologists should always consider appendiceal origin

    From detection to action—a proposed workflow to ensure first reports of alien species from molecular analyses are acted upon

    Biosecurity is crucial for managing biological invasions, yet communication gaps between detection and action often hinder timely responses. In South Africa, the polyphagous shot hole borer (Euwallacea fornicatus) was first recorded through a DNA barcoding project in 2012 but no action was taken until a separate field observation was made in 2017. Here we present a workflow that aims to ensure molecular observations are evaluated and acted upon. We demonstrate its value using South Africa as a case study. 10,084 records from South Africa’s ‘Barcode of Life Data System’ were compared with three datasets: a watch list of species of concern (400 species), a list of high-risk pests detected at-border, but not post-border (218 species); and the Botanical Database of Southern Africa (BODATSA, 68,153 records). Four species from the BOLD were identified as being on the watch list or in the list of detected high-risk pests and four species were flagged as possible additions to the list of alien plants outside of cultivation in South Africa. The method is codified in a simple, generalisable workflow that, we argue, will improve the flow of information from detection to action and so allow biosecurity systems to become more responsive
