Socio-science spirituality learning model for cultivating student spirituality and science process skills at Islamic schools
Complementing science subjects with spirituality components is almost universal and is a significant requirement in religion-based schools. However, integrating spiritual components into science classes is challenging, particularly in inquiry-based problem-solving tasks. In this experiment, we modified inquiry learning and contextual teaching. We tested the efficacy of a combined model called the socio-science spirituality (3S) model on students’ spirituality and science process skills (SPS). Through a quasi-experiment, this learning model was applied in classes addressing the digestive system, additives and addictive chemicals, and the circulatory system. Following the 3S classroom implementation, we compared the mean pre- and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test and then assessed the relationship between spirituality and SPS in the classrooms using the Pearson-correlation test. The research found that spirituality and SPS were much higher and more prevalent in the experimental group compared to the control group. In the experimental class, there was also a link between spirituality and SPS. Theoretically, this research finding contributes to spiritual education and the development of SPS skills in science classes simultaneously. This research provides a unique way to prioritize the integration of spirituality in science learning. Practically, the research explain the details of the implementation of spirituality that can be applied to inquiry activities in science classes through the 3S model
The effect of character-charged maritime textbooks on increasing students’ character values
Teaching and learning activities for early childhood students currently do not support increasing the character values of graduates, and the emphasis is still on learning whose output leads to competency according to standards. Using character-charged maritime textbooks is a solution to assist teachers in facilitating the application of character values in marine learning. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of character-focused marine textbooks on students’ moral development. The method of research is quasi-experimental, with a pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique is convenience sampling. Two classes use the method, B1 for experimental purposes (with 80 students) and B2 for comparison (with 80 students). Independent T-tests were used in data analysis to compare differences in students’ average scores in the experimental and control groups before the intervention. N-Gain was used to compare the character growth of control and intervention students. The study’s findings indicate that students’ character values significantly influence adoption of morally edifying maritime textbooks. This shows increased student character values, namely responsibility, honesty, discipline, love and affection, caring, courage, independence, and hard work, after being taught using character-charged maritime textbooks. Thus, it can be concluded that character-charged maritime textbooks can significantly increase students’ character values
The factors in the decision-making of high school graduates about higher education in the digital era
Numerous specialists from different fields and perspectives have investigated determinants affecting the choice of future career path by school-leavers. The present study aims to analyze the factors influencing the decision of applicants to choose an academic major at a higher educational institution in the context of the digitalization of education. The authors developed the questionnaire for interviewing respondents. The survey involved a total of 160 students from Russia and Kazakhstan. The study took place from September to November 2022. The researchers collected a large amount of data, including the average scores of students and first-year students’ responses to the survey. The analysis of these data revealed many factors that influence a school graduate’s decision on a future academic major. The results describe three groups of factors that influenced the students’ decisions, namely family, social, and academic ones. The findings suggest that students choose an academic major more independently when they have an online learning experience. In the context of digitalized education, respondents are more likely to discuss their profession with peers or friends in social networks than with parents (0.49 vs. 0.31)
Personality traits and work performance among academicians in university: leadership styles as a mediator
Psychologists have argued that Western-based explanations of personality traits, leadership styles, and work performance may not capture Eastern norms and values. This study compares academicians’ personality traits and work performance in a traditional Indonesian Javanese community using transformational and Asta Brata as western and Hindu philosophy of leadership styles scales, respectively. This study uses transformational and Asta Brata leadership styles to examine how leadership styles act as mediators between personality traits and work performance. The respondents were 342 academics from East Java universities selected using multistage cluster random sampling. The results showed that the transformational leadership style mediates only the relationship between agreeableness with contextual performance and openness to task performance. Asta Brata’s leadership style mediates openness to experience, extraversion, and agreeableness with tasks and contextual performance. In conclusion, academicians recognize that Asta Brata is better than the transformational leadership style as a mediator between personality traits and work performance. These data imply Asta Brata’s leadership approaches better resemble Javanese leadership and are accepted by followers than transformational leadership. Finally, Asta Brata’s leadership styles explain the big five personality traits and work performance better than transformational leadership styles
Students’ perception and preference of feedback methods: enhancing the quality assurance of higher education institution
This study evaluated students’ perceptions about providing feedback and identified their preferred feedback methods. The study design comprised quantitative and qualitative approaches to ensure a better understanding of students’ perceptions and increase the study’s validity. A structured questionnaire was distributed in five higher education institutions (HEIs) in Oman, followed by a focus group discussion (FGD). A total of 614 students responded to the questionnaire. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic text analysis. It was observed that although students understand the importance of feedback, they feel that the methods can be improved. Furthermore, HEIs did not share the outcomes with the students, and therefore, students believed that HEIs were not considering their comments. Whilst students preferred anonymous online surveys, they believed that inperson meetings would be even more useful. This paper looked at how the educational well-being of students in Oman can be improved through the development of methods of seeking feedback from institutions. Additionally, this result can be applied worldwide to improve feedback mechanisms
Non-educational background teachers’ knowledge of pedagogical competences
The existence of non-educational background teachers (NEBTs) no doubt contributes to developing the quality of education but seems to lack attention. This research aimed to investigating the knowledge of NEBTs on pedagogical competence. A mixed method with explanatory sequential design was employed. The study was conducted in Central Lombok Regency. The total population was 109 spreading in 12 districts and three participants out of the total population were selected to participate in the interview. The instruments were a test in the form of multiple choice and an interview. The data from the test were analyzed quantitatively while the data obtained from the interview was analyzed qualitatively. The data of the test showed that the scores of four sub-aspects of pedagogical competence were 52.20 for the learning theories, 57.33 for students’ characteristics, 61.75 for the nature of education, and 84.30 for curriculum. Thus, the mean score was 63.90. The data from the interview showed that self-development efforts were low and the school supervisors and staffs role contributed only at the practical level. The research concluded that the knowledge of NEBTs was 63.90 in average due to the internal and external factors
Enhancing decision-making skills through geoscience education for sustainable development
Sustainable development (SD) can be achieved through education. The goal of incorporating SD principles into education is to enhance both the present and future quality of human life. This study analyzes learning effectiveness by developing education for sustainable development (ESD) based inquiry to improve students’ decision-making skills. Specifically, this study aimed to explore ESD-based inquiry learning tools, analyze student decision-making skills, and analyze student responses to ESD-based inquiry learning tools. The development research used is a 4D model (define, design, develop, and disseminate) and a one-group pre-test-posttest design. Validation sheets, tests, and questionnaires are employed as data-gathering tools. Data analysis using percentage, mean, n-gain, and paired sample t-test techniques. The results showed the following: i) ESD-based inquiry learning tools developed according to the assessment of experts and practitioners are in the valid and reliable category in terms of both construction and substance; ii) the ESD-based inquiry learning is effective in improving students’ decision-making skills with an average gain (gain score) in the high category; and iii) the student's response to each learning process using ESD-based inquiry learning is very good and is considered more exciting and motivating. This finding contributes to educators developing various ESD-based learning materials, especially geoscience materials, to achieve quality learning
Analysis of ecological literacy level and creative thinking skills of college students
Higher education institution is one of educational institutions that serve as a place of cultural values, and norms expected to become a foundation to foster caring attitudes toward the environment. These attitudes are accordingly meant to develop ecological literacy in order to overcome environmental problems which are likely to be minimized by combining ecological literacy and creative thinking skills. A quantitative descriptive with correlational study was employed in this research. There were 275 college students from three areas in Indonesia, namely Jakarta, Sumatera, and Gorontalo involved as respondents of the research. Data was collected by means of Google Forms consisting of tests and opinions. The ecological literacy was analyzed using dimensions of caring, practical competence, and knowledge while the creative thinking skills were analyzed using dimensions of fluency, originality, flexibility, and elaboration. This research is limited to students in the Department of Science and Non-Science. Findings of the research indicates that the ecological literacy level is in the medium category, whereas the creative thinking skills are good. Female students have a higher average score in ecological literacy and creative thinking skills compared to that of male students. Thus, there is a positive relationship between ecological literacy and creative thinking skills
