The Role of Wearable Devices in Tracking the Well-Being of Patients Suffering from Chronic Conditions - the review
Get PDFIn recent years, wearable technology, including smartwatches, fitness bands, and smart rings, has become an integral part of health monitoring for patients with chronic diseases. These devices enable non-invasive, continuous tracking of key health parameters such as heart rate, glucose levels, sleep quality, and physical activity. This article analyzes their application in managing diabetes, cardiac arrhythmias, depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), highlighting their benefits in early detection of abnormalities and personalized healthcare. Research indicates that these tools significantly enhance treatment results while minimising the likelihood of complications and supporting patient self-management. Despite numerous advantages, such as increased patient engagement, this technology faces challenges, including data privacy and integration with healthcare systems. The conclusions point to the necessity for further development of wearable devices to ensure their broader implementation in clinical practice and patients’ daily lives

Get PDFThe aim of the study was to find out what early booklet bindings looked like, when they began to be used, and whether a Polish peculiarity, different from the pan-European one, could be discerned in this regard. To this end, a stock search was conducted in a collection of 18th-century books, noting the booklet bindings present there. Bookstore advertisements of the era were also analyzed, searching for information about booklet bindings. The data obtained was contrasted with the findings of foreign researchers.
The existence of four types of booklet bindings was found, of which three were used in the Polish lands. Soft paper bindings, although they had been known since the 15th century, were used sporadically; they came into wider use in the 1860s. In their basic form, they were made of grayish-blue paper. Among them, two types have been identified, different in terms of technology and use: temporary bindings, stapled (bound) to a stile, and stitched bindings, with a liner, regarded as a cheaper version of library bindings. In addition to books in standard binding, an insignificant percentage of bindings made of decorative papers were noted, as well as copies equipped with a printed title sticker, which researchers consider the earliest variant of publisher's binding. The third type – a binding without a cover, but only with a paper trim was used for occasional publications of small volume.
In terms of terminology, it has been established that the name alla rustica was used for different varieties of soft paper binding in that era, and is identical to the booklet used later on.Celem badania było stwierdzenie, jak wyglądały wczesne oprawy broszurowe, kiedy zaczęły być używane, a także czy można dostrzec w tym zakresie polską specyfikę, odmienną od tej ogólnoeuropejskiej. Na potrzeby artykułu przeprowadzono kwerendę magazynową w zbiorze książek osiemnastowiecznych w Bibliotece Uniwersytetu Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy, odnotowując znajdujące się w nim oprawy broszurowe. Przeanalizowano również ogłoszenia księgarskie z epoki, wyszukując w nich informacje o oprawie broszurowej. Uzyskane dane skonfrontowano z ustaleniami badaczy zagranicznych.
Stwierdzono istnienie czterech typów opraw broszurowych, z czego na ziemiach polskich stosowano trzy typy. Miękkie oprawy papierowe – choć znano je od XV wieku – były używane sporadycznie, na szerszą skalę weszły do użytku w latach sześćdziesiątych XVIII wieku. W formie podstawowej były sporządzane z szaroniebieskiego papieru. Wśród nich zidentyfikowano dwa typy, różne pod względem technologii i zastosowania: oprawy tymczasowe, zszywane (związywane) na sztorc, i oprawy szyte na zwięzy, z wyklejką, uchodzące za tańszą wersję opraw bibliotecznych. Obok książek w oprawie standardowej odnotowano nieznaczną procentowo ilość opraw z papierów dekoracyjnych, a także egzemplarze wyposażone w drukowaną nalepkę tytułową, który to element badacze uznają za najwcześniejszy wariant oprawy wydawniczej. Typ trzeci – oprawa bez okładki, a tylko z papierową lamówką – był używany do publikacji okazjonalnych o niewielkiej objętości.
W aspekcie terminologicznym ustalono, że nazwa alla rustica była w tamtej epoce stosowana w odniesieniu do różnych odmian miękkiej oprawy papierowej i jest tożsama z zastosowaną później broszurą

Financial Market Development and Export Earnings in Nigeria
No full textThis study aims to evaluate the impact of financial market development on earnings from exports in Nigeria. Expo facto research design was used in this study and time series data were obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria, International Monetary Fund, and World Bank Development database from 1990 to 2021.The study utilized Auto-regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique in establishing the short and long-run relationship among the variables. From the result, it was found that: financial market depth has negative but significant (β = -20.457) impact with export earnings in Nigeria; financial market access (β = 3.149) have a positive and significant impact with export earnings in Nigeria; financial market efficiency (β = 3.695) have positive and significant effect with export earnings in Nigeria; and financial market stability (β = 0.025) have positive and significant effect with export earnings in Nigeria. Therefore, it was concluded that financial market development through financial market access, efficiency and stability has a significant impact on export earnings in Nigeria. Accordingly, the study recommended that policymakers and relevant stakeholders focus on enhancing and maintaining an enabling environment for easy access to financial markets which boosts export earnings and among others
Intellectual Capital and Financial Performance of Listed Oil & Gas Companies in Nigeria
No full textIntellectual capital is a driving force to performance of many organizations worldwide. This study examines intellectual capital and the corresponding performance of listed oil and gas companies in the Nigeria. The specific objectives are to: (i) examine the influence of Human Capital Efficiency (HCE) on financial performance (Price Earning) (PE) among oil and gas companies in Nigeria; (ii) evaluate the influence of Structural Capital Efficiency (SCE) on Price Earning (PE) among oil and gas companies in Nigeria and (iii) assess the influence of Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE) on Price Earning (PE) among oil and gas companies in Nigeria. This study used a longitudinal research design; and annual reports of sampled twelve oil and gas firms for five years (2018-2022) were collected for analysis. A panel regression was used to analyze the obtained data. The result revealed that Capital Employed Efficiency (CEE) has positive and significant influence on financial performance of listed sampled oil and gas companies in Nigeria. Human Capital Efficiency (HCE) and Structural Capital Efficiency (SCE) do not have any influence on financial performance of the sampled listed oil and gas firms. The study concluded that intellectual capital and financial performance of oil and gas firms in Nigeria are interrelated. Thereby, recommended that oil and gas firms should invest more in physical asset (CEE) as it has capacity in enhancing the financial performances of the sampled firms

Is p and ¬p a contradiction?
Get PDFWe discuss how to formulate and understand contradiction. After emphasizing the importance of a correct formulation for a notion as important as the notion of contradiction, we present a variety of formulations of the proposition corresponding to “p and ¬p”, which is often considered as expressing contradiction. We then discuss the standard example of contradiction in classical logic and the way Wittgenstein defines contradiction in the Tractatus, not using negation. After that, we point out the variety of connectives which are nowadays called negations and often denoted by the same symbol, underlying that negations obeying neither the law of non-contradiction, nor the excluded middle are considered part of the family. We then recall how contradiction is defined within the theory of oppositions, drawing attention to the fact that this theory is against considering that the pair p and ¬p forms a contradiction if we take into account the whole family of negations, including paraconsistent negations. At the end of the journey, we set up a list of notions involving negation and contradiction and propose a terminology that may be useful to dispel confusion and promote understanding.We discuss how to formulate and understand contradiction. This is a good example of the fact that the emergence of even very advanced technologies does not degrade the role of parents in the upbringing process, but, on the contrary, it puts new challenges before them and raises the importance they play in the modern process of shaping young people.The aim of the article is to present the role of the family as a key institution shaping the correct functioning patterns of children in the contemporary social space modeled by new technologies. The theoretical analysis carried out in the article presents the family as a key institution responsible for upbringing, describes the specificity of children’s functioning in a world dominated bynew technologies, and also indicates the correct attitudes of parents towards children using digital tools, while emphasizing the important role played by the traditional family, even in a world where more and more activities are digital.Dynamiczne przeobrażania cywilizacyjne bezpośrednio przekładają się na instytucję rodziny.
